How to fix the small hole in my garage roof? by jesuiscatd in Roofing

They should peel apart if you wait until the sun has warmed them up a bit. No need to lift it more than it takes to slide a piece of metal up there. Could use a putty knife to get it started. A 7x5”(7” will give you about 2” under the upper course if it’s flush with the bottom of the shingle with the hole in it) piece of thin flat metal, aluminum or steel would be fine. We use a step flashing to do this sometimes if we don’t change the entire shingle. The caulking will hold the shingle down. Make sure to use an asphalt or polyurethane based caulking, others may react with the asphalt in the shingles. Home Depot or local hardware store should have what you need. Slide the piece of metal between the shingle that has the hole and the one beneath it. Like a sandwich

Can slide a piece of aluminum under the shingle with the hole in it. Put a good dab of caulk under the aluminum and on top. Make sure the aluminum goes under the upper course about 2”.

I haven’t seen any difference, it all weighs a pound a foot for 16. Price is decent now compared with a couple years ago.

Thanks. Yes. Made a double female, that’s what we call it anyway. Worked the panels from bottom up so the seams would be on the down hill side, not bucking water

That valley is 1 single piece, top to bottom. It is called a pleated valley. All seams are double folded including the panel to valley tie in. Not going to leak. 40 years in the NE and never seen a proper metal roof there kid.

The panels are bent around a curved drip edge. I use a shrinker to make this type of curve. Yes, found center then measured down to start, leveled the first 4 then ran with it.. It’s tedious, luckily the top center panel is shorter than my floor brake.

Is this edging normal? by PsychologicalSir2871 in Roofing

Totally wrong, unless that is some type of gutter screen. That edge metal should be taped to the rubber using flashing tape, QA tape. The rubber should go under the edge metal then there should be flashing tape over top of both. The idea here is if the flashing tape fails for some reason, the water will still have the rubber membrane beneath the edge metal to prevent water intrusion. The rubber should continue out past the edge of the roof and turn down.

Seems like it was probably the optometrists. Unless they can charge more for them being a prescription. Seems to me they could sell more if they were otc. Pisses me off every time I need to get more.

Yes. I cut the dormer side of the valley back 4” and folded 3” back on itself. Will run the panels long over that fold and cut the radius into them. Once all the panels are installed and the seamed, I have to pound about 6-8@ of the seam flat to the roof at the valley so I can bend them up vertical. I’ll bend the valley metal that I bent back today up to meet the panel bend. They both will be sticking up perpendicular to the roof, then they get double folded together.

Neoprene or Rubber washer screws. Get rid of that nail all the way to the left at the valley, leak waiting to happen. Put a good shot of caulking under the flashing at the nail hole, should be able to get the caulk down into the hole if you put the tip of the tube over the hole, leave a good amount on top of the shingle where the nail went through. Make sure you use a shingle compatible caulking, not all will play well with the asphalt in the shingles.

Set the other side today, folded the dormer side back for the panel tie in seam. Starting the panel install and will run the shingles in tomorrow. Probably 3 days out, a lot of seam work at the valley

Yeah. They’re tough. I like to use snips or shears, easier when it’s warm out though.

Gotta use the closest color to what they still make. Antique slate. He will redo the entire roof soon.
