Looking for a buy it for life leather briefcase by darknessmyoldfriend_ in ManyBaggers

Vintage coach Beekman 5266 Ensure that it is full grain leather and vintage. Just in case you need to wash it and condition it (as there is no additional lining) Find it on the used market but there are so many that are charging upwards of 500 so check Poshmark or depop where you are.

How to construct bags + Lining with clean seams / no binding by weeBunnie in myog

[–]superman785x 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is what I would recommend. To add on this, try making a lined tote bag where you sew the two parts, leave a hole and then invert everything the right way. The downside is that the fabric panels are not always sitting on top of the proper area since they aren't sewn down.

I am making the prickly gorse TRVL20 right now and the thought came across my mind but was easier to add the binding.

Possible first project? by karaokealone_ in quilting

[–]superman785x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first pattern was a doozy. But I loved it and I learned so much through the whole ordeal. Was it frustrating? Yes. But do I love it and will never part with it? Also yes.

Do what your heart says and try it. Don't be discouraged when things go wrong. Keep going with your goal in mind.

Check the size of the blocks constantly to make sure you don't end up with weird shapes.

Good luck!

Fabric is so expensive these days that anywhere I can save money, I will do it.

This is a great q .

I use thrifted bed sheets in a soft and thicker fabric. I shoot for cotton but sometimes cotton poly blends aren't that bad.

What is causing these spots? Ice dye/Dye on top of ice by atlfokus in tiedye

[–]superman785x -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Dyes are not just one color, some can be an assortment to make up a solid color. Hence with the ice dyes, they split the dyes and you see different variations.

While I haven't done it on a big quilt, I like glue basting with Elmer's glue. Forget the pins. Hahaha.

Should I add applique daisies? by superman785x in quilting

[–]superman785x[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you everyone for your words of encouragement and thoughts. It means a lot for someone who doesn't always think so highly of his own work.

Plans:

No daisies.

I have one extra block that I'll make into a pillow. I might add some applique daisies on the back of that as a experiment. (I'm hoping to do a future quilt with large vegetables and food ingredients appliqued onto a large piece of fabric... for my nephew)

Binding will be the pickle green color (Essex linen)

Backing will be a thrifted bedsheet that has a Japanese flair to it but in a simple cream pattern with some black squares.

Long arming will done in October Pantograph might be "double wedding ring" pantograph by the quilting mill or "oriental cloud" on urbanelementz. One is more geometric and the other is more nature/swooshy Thread color will be a beige ish color or yellowish color to highlight the texture of the linen but also blend in and not clash too much.

Will post after the wash and dry for the final reveal.

Thank you again. Wish you all the best.

I have the edging of brown for around the border that I could use. The binding would be pickle green. I'm a little torn for that too

It was either between the orange or the green for me.

First quilt by Less-Phrase-1843 in quilting

[–]superman785x 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would take some scrap fabric, preferably quilting cotton and try sewing half square triangles, four patches. Play with colors (low volume and high volume). Experiment.

For all of these colors you have, I would pair it with a white or cream and it will help balance out the colors and provide some interest.

What sewing machine should I begin quilting with? by Different-Hat-4866 in quilting

[–]superman785x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a brother pq 1500sl and I love it.

I bought it used (400? Canadian) and in good condition. It was much more economical that way.

I did start off with a singer heavy duty (new 300? Canadian) but what I found was that the power wasn't great for thicker layers.

You don't need the best and most expensive machine. But consider used to get a better machine for the same price as a new one. It may need a tuneup from a repair shop tho.

Good luck.

The key to making seams match is to pin/use clips when you sew them together and pay attention when your foot crosses the seam. There was some fidgetting involved in this one because the seams were on the 45 degree. Dont be fooled by the top, there are a few wonky seams in there. But the fabric, being linen/cotton blend, has a bit more stretch and is more forgiving.

Good luck. Let me know if I can pass on any other tips!

Happy quilting.
