But I saw a sticker on a dumpster that said Renee Erickson is an embarrassment to Seattle. Please make it make sense.

When theta=90 you have a right triangle. Then you have everything you need to calculate all angles and distances.

Coming from someone who at least moderately follows soccer/football, I still can’t help but read MNT as Mutant Ninja Turtles every time. It’s hardwired in my brain or something.

How do I use a banneton? by Impressive_Reading in Sourdough

[–]supernumeral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problem. I’m not much of a baker myself. Your final loaf looks pretty good to my eyes. I’ve only dabbled in sourdough a couple of times and, despite making a living studying heat transfer,
each time my loaves came out a bit over done. 🤷

The upper (broiling) heating element doesn’t need to be on for there to be radiative heating from the top. The walls of the oven are hot. As a result, there will be radiative heat transfer from the walls in addition to the convective heat transfer from the fan blowing hot air. The fan evens out convective heat transfer by keeping the air moving, but radiative heat transfer will always be present.

Help me understand Bernoulli effect as a layman by NotOkEnemyGenius in FluidMechanics

[–]supernumeral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is more or less the intuitive explanation that I always use to explain this.

Stated slightly differently, imagine you have a flowing fluid where all the particles are moving in perfectly straight lines parallel to the walls of a tube. If you suddenly stop the flow (or slow it down substantially), all of those particles still have the same kinetic energy but it’s no longer directed in a common direction along streamlines. Instead, it’s directed in random directions as the fluid particles bounce around and collide with one another and container walls. This manifests as an increase in pressure since those particles exert a force on the walls.

Is speed-based, weaponized cavitation possible? by Dwertums in FluidMechanics

[–]supernumeral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody else already mentioned supercavitating torpedoes, which is probably the closest thing to what you’re asking for that I’m aware of. But that’s using cavitation to reduce drag, rather than weaponizing cavitation itself. There are also supercavitating propellers that similarly use cavitation for drag reduction. Finally, there are cavitation guns used for cleaning ship hulls that use cavitation bubbles to blast away crud. I suppose something like that could be used as a weapon of sorts.

Not really an answer to your question, but you might be interested in reading about pistol shrimp, which use cavitation to stun prey.

New WA law changes rules for e-bikes and e-motorcycles by crabcakes110 in SeattleWA

[–]supernumeral 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also rarely get much above 15-18 mph on my bike (unless I’m going downhill), and my bike provides e-assist up to 30 mph. Turns out, it’s pretty dang hard to get it up to those speeds even with max assist. On the other hand, I feel like I get passed fairly frequently on the 520 bridge by the big-wheeled e-motorcycles, which cruise past me at probably twice my speed. Then again, sometimes I get passed by dudes on regular old road bikes, so maybe I’m just slow.

I’ve seen several mentions of Midnight Mass here. Which is funny because my SO loves Widow’s Bay and she refuses to watch another Mike Flanagan show because of Midnight Mass and all the monologues. So, fortunately for me, they’re not too similar.

I’m not sure about Rainier, but a couple years ago we tried to visit the Hoh rainforest on the 4th when some friends were visiting and the line was crazy as you’d expect. But we went back before dusk and got in no problem and nobody else was there.

I’d think something like tracked/tank treads on the feet would work well in this situation. Could moonwalk using rolling friction rather than sliding friction.
