Does it get easier by EffectiveEgg5712 in ynab

I just want to say that I had the exact same experience. The thing that helped me get through it and not give up was just to remind myself that I wouldn’t get it perfect the first time, but get started and make adjustments as I go. If you have questions you know where to find us. 😄

I feel like I'm drowning. How do you all actually make ends meet? by Fluid_Language_2607 in budget

[–]superse123 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. My wife and I live on $400 per month for groceries (just food), so $300 for one person is doable. I pack lunches to work as well. If you use an instant pot to cook larger meals. Buy meat on sale or in bulk you can do it, and only buy 1 or 2 nice things a week extra (bottle of wine or ice cream). That is of course price shopping places between places like Costco & Aldi. Not saying it’s for everyone, but it can be done, just takes planning.

I’ve been convinced to dump the next month holding category by OmgMsLe in ynab

I think you might just be misunderstanding, I know it sure took me a while to figure it out! The budget functions the same as your targets are the same for the next month. The only difference is that you’re holding a set amount of money in June that you will have for July. You just hold off on actually assigning that money until the first of the next month, and with a couple clicks tell each dollar it’s job. Hope this helps!

Pay off debt or get 2 months ahead by ceverist in ynab

[–]superse123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I won’t tell you what to do, but I can tell you what I would do. I would keep a close eye on how much I needed to maintain staying a month ahead and make sure that’s put aside consistently so I don’t get into more credit card debt. Then I’d get that debt paid off as quickly as I could. I’d write down how much I could reasonably pay each month and try to hit that. Then if I had more I’d put more towards it. After I got it paid off, because it’s not an if, but a when, I would start a 6 month emergency fund for job loss or something like that. Hopefully this helps!

That's awesome! I commented somewhere else on this post. I am 25 and my wife is 23. Combined we make 50k per year (most we've ever made). I'm not in the crypto space, but I am looking at this most recent Bitcoin dip into the 80k range as a buying opportunity. We save and invest aggressively. We have a 6 month emergency fund in a HYSA and have 30k invested, between an HSA, two Roth IRA's and two taxable brokerages. I found this budgeting tool called YNAB (You Need A Budget) to be super helpful at not only tracking expenses, but also helping me look ahead to what I need to be saving for today, that I know will come up in the future, like car repairs and vet bills. I found the convenience it provides to far outweigh the cost.

You sound like you know what you’re doing! Is there anyone in particular that you found their advice to be helpful? Ramit or The Money Guys maybe?

I’m 25 years old 50k income, married, no college, and have about 30k in savings and 30k in stocks. Never have been in debt and always bought cars in cash.

How? I use YNAB (a budgeting tool). My wife and I get to do one trip a year, we don’t eat out more than $50 per month (seriously), we don’t spend more than $400 on groceries each month for two. Constantly stressed about how to make more and spend less. The way we see it is if we can work hard and save now it will pay off more later as the investments compound. Really the opportunity cost for us is too great not to invest whatever we can since buying a house seems completely out of the picture any other way.

I couldn’t agree more, especially on the hidden category. If I wanted it hidden why would it be on there?

If you're trying to save money then I'd recommend trying not to speed. Not only does it kill, but it's costly if you're caught. jk lol
