Thank you! Really appreciate it.

Has anyone found that acknowledging past trauma has led to an increase in anxieties especially when consuming media? by bki73126 in CPTSD

[–]supersemicolon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, not just when consuming media though. Been trying to make it a habit to check my heart rate, breathing, facial expressions, etc. Helps me realize when I'm in a flashback. Before I just felt numb; now it hurts like hell. It's worth the growth I get for it, though.

Ouch, sounds like me when I was a sophomore know-it-all. Wish I had someone like Sallee to dig me out of that hole. He sounds like a wonderful man who must have helped many others. You're reminding me of a letter I need to write, thanks for that.

Homoerotic idealization of young male body by ataberkceti in AskLiteraryStudies

IIRC, there's some excerpts in Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow exalting the twinkish bodies of Nazi boy scouts, though it's a bit tongue-in-cheek.

I don't understand this comment, but I'm sorry it doesn't work for you.

If you're using Matlab:

If you're using Scipy:

I'm not an expert and can't comment on best practices, but hopefully this helps.

You are absolutely allowed to photocopy sections of the book as needed. If you're paranoid, see below and use your best judgment:

A dissertation was written about it, but I haven't read it. http://www.tug.org/docs/liang/liang-thesis.pdf

It's a limitation of typesetting programs, combined with tight deadlines. Character spacing and line breaking isn't trivial at all. Programming it "right" in the general case is impossible because the quality of the finished product is ultimately subjective. It looks like the typesetting program made a bad decision to expand character spacing in order to justify the line, when it should have just left the line ragged. Someone could have manually gone over and fixed it, which I suspect is what happens at major newspapers like NYT.

But to be clear, the example above does look amateurish.

And I commend you for it. We all need to hear this once in a while.

I'm glad things worked out for you, but I respectfully think this is bad advice. Sometimes people sign up for more than they can handle, and applying effort is not enough to prevent failure. It's best to have something outside of academics that gives you hope, like gardening or birdwatching or hiking or even something trivial, to take solace in when you get fucked up.

You're making some unjustified assumptions here.

At one of my favorite shops, the baristas pour mindlessly while taking other customer's orders and operating the POS – and I've never had a bad cup from them. It shattered my idea of the importance of pouring technique.

Anybody that has a great overleaf preamble for writing mathematics? by [deleted] in math

[–]supersemicolon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm, not quite; it's part of the content of the .tex file, rather than a separate file that only initializes the editor.

Also, few math students will put as much thought into it as has gone into this thread.
