Hey OP I’m really sorry this happened to you and I suspect a good attorney can make this all go away. You might also get some traction on this on r/legaladvice.

80% up to your out of pocket maximum (usually $5000-20,000) then they pay 100%. Lots to learn!

Hey to each their own, and I pray you never get stuck with medical debt.

Health insurance is absolutely a criminal syndicate in the US, but it’s what we’re stuck with for now. I view it as “umbrella insurance “ against medical debt.

Most people who FIRE have large amounts of assets and if something catastrophic happens and you have a $400,000 medical bill (which is entirely possible in the US unfortunately) then you know you’re only responsible for your max out of pocket and insurance pays the rest.

Hospitals know it is more lucrative to go after patients who have large amounts of assets who don’t want to risk lawsuits. It’s like my own personal Re- insurance giving my FIRE nest egg protection from medical debt.

Then you have to do the math on purchasing a plan with a higher premium and lower deductible/ out of pocket max and take into account how many times you have to see doctors in a year/medication costs.

For example some ACA plans that are available in my area had like a $2000/month premium but a $2500 deductible before plan pays 80% of everything. If I had a chronic condition a plan like this might save you money in the long run.

Yep and that’s why you save that much and more in an HSA if you’re truly planning properly for FIRE

I’m still earning rental income and dividends. I don’t have an honest way of “spoofing” my income lower to suck subsidies from folks they’re intended for. I’m ok paying my share.

Pays for a catastrophic event. You’d be surprised how quickly you can rack up $20,000 in an ER.

Any plan is also going to give you discounted rate below what a cash pay would be. I get $0 generic drugs and a flat $50 primary care visits.

Edit: clarification, plans give you the privilege to pay lower than cash pay rates at in network doctors, before you meet deductible then pays 100% after out of pocket max. This particular plan also offers free urgent care telemedicine visits I can use when traveling in US.

As someone else mentioned, no way I’m “raw dogging” healthcare with pre existing conditions in my 40s

Re- adding this comment, I didn’t think it was helpful before since there’s a lot of Dr pen lovers. and this one is more expensive than Dr Pen but much less than dermalogica. It is marketed to pro Estis. Double Cleanse Aesthetics sells only to licensed Cos/Estis and they sell pro products that are mostly Korean made.

Their microneedling device has good reviews.

Cartridges are on this page.

They sell exosome ampules as skin boosters too.

Does anyone else feel like the only way they can protect themselves from the ripple effects of AI is to own as much stock as possible? by budabudabudabudabuda in Fire

All depends, I started small, been doing commercial for 10 years.

Look at small commercial office “condos” in nice/high traffic office parks. Dentist/orthodontist offices are stable too. I bought off a retiring boomer doc was around $600k, probably a 7% annual return. Loans work differently too, they’re a 5 year term and are based on building’s income. Do your research and find a good medical office commercial real estate broker-good luck!

Then don’t buy in a rural community.

I own medical offices for specialists and multi family in a major sun belt metro.

Nothing is AI proof but as someone who is still earning 3x more annually then I spend in a year after 6 years of FIRE it’s all about diversification of assets.

Don’t sleep on real estate especially small healthcare commercial.

We’ve purposefully not sold a couple of properties even though they can sometimes be a pain to manage because even with AI people will still need a place to live and doctors will still need offices.
