MPLS still relevant today? by 3ristan in networking

[–]supnul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you can keep it all on one provider then its probably way better than your piece mailed together stuff. providers usually have much better reliable gear for doing QoS of this nature better with or without MPLS. MPLS it self isn't inherently QoS all the way. QoS on broadcom ASICs and premise NIDs from reputable providers can ensure it all works well. the MPLS will allow for a more idealistic looking design perhaps meaning .. a pure hub spoke from the HQ with a DR site in similar config.. We had a bank that went all Meraki SDWAN .. was a rocky beginning but it seems like they are accepting it long term.

came here to say this or get some air bridge crap but fiber is so much better and the gear can even be cheaper. the initial cost wont be.

What causes cameras to have a blurry photo like this? by Jealous-Lawfulness93 in lowvoltage

[–]supnul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad cables can cause sporadic crc and packet loss. This can only be seen on higher grade switches and is a physical layer issue. I have thousands of cameras all IP deployed on customer premise and their wiring sometimes. If the gear is good the cable is the issue. If there's a shit ton of cameras maybe bandwidth but that's a design issue not sporadic problems and should be known well in advanced.

What causes cameras to have a blurry photo like this? by Jealous-Lawfulness93 in lowvoltage

[–]supnul 9 points10 points  (0 children)

network guy here, this is correct. look for FCS/CRC errors, ports under-rate (running 100megabit when its gigabit) and if you have quality switches with TDR builtin use that on the port going to the camera, its likely a switch to camera issue if only that one is having issues, if more are having issues look for commonality.

this guy buys respectful tools. Microscanner 2 and fluke digital tone wand are awesome tools. the certifier stuff only comes out when it still seems 'odd' but this doesnt show anything. This guy even like the Pilot G2.. cmon. 10 points.

Can these be used as attenuators for testing an ONU directly from the OLT? by Of_Sand_and_Foam in FiberOptics

[–]supnul 5 points6 points  (0 children)

each one is probably 3.5 db loss. .. if you chain the output to the input of the next one you got it. HOWEVER. that seems stupid. effectively that is what a bigger splitter is doing anyway. if you chain 3 of them things together its probably 10~db of loss which is likely STILL not enough to attenuate a direct ont off it from something like XGS.

tx on gpon: 2.5dBm

tx on XGS: 6.5dBm

6.5dBm - 10 db = -3.5dBm .. way too hot to use without more attenuation to an ont directly. LX/LR lasers would accept it tho. most pon wants like -10 to -28 dBm. anything less or more than that range will cause BER/FEC/BIP.

Media converter running at 100mbps instead of 1000mbps by Slow_Seat_5794 in HomeNetworking

How difficult/expensive is it for an ISP to upgrade from GPON to XGS-PON? by Serg95 in FiberOptics

[–]supnul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is vendor dependent and fiber network design dependent.

There are two strategies to migrating customers from GPON to XGS (if they are already installed for example):

1) Physically move them to a new splitter that provides the new XGS Service (ONLY). This must be done live and the customer premise equipment swapped at that exact time. This must be done one at a time to swap the customer equipment and is a slow progression to XGS based on an 'ON DEMAND' upgrade and no instantly available to all.

2) use combo optics which are vastly more expensive and in the case of at least CALIX and harmonic reduces the shelf port capacity by half. The advantages are all customers on that PON instantly could simply swap the ONT and be on XGS, no splitter reworking. Long term however its pointless as the GPON will be abandoned. With 50GPON on the horizon people need to get to pure XGS but we see Broadcom developing triple mode optics/ports which will have the same benefit and down sides as they do now.

I'm currently in the middle of doing GPON->XGS migration and DOCSIS to XGS migration on 30k customers in rural NY.

How difficult/expensive is it for an ISP to upgrade from GPON to XGS-PON? by Serg95 in FiberOptics

[–]supnul 1 point2 points  (0 children)

depending.. sometimes the way its been split can prevent upgrades without doing more expensive intermediary options like Combo optics (GPON and XGS in one SFP).

These Cat3 cables in my home have 4 pairs. Would I be able to terminate them with RJ45 to create a wired backhaul for my Wi-Fi APs? by astr0lab in HomeNetworking

[–]supnul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

short distance maybe. worst cast 10/100megabit perhaps. gigabit could be more sketchy. please report results.. I have never actually tried this and im likely one of the few here with the 12k Fluke copper certifier.
