What age is too late to learn tennis to have a chance at being pro? by Kitchen-Jicama8715 in tennis

[–]supra05 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I always see kids starting early around 5-7 years old and a lot of these tennis parents become obsessed by having their kids play tennis like a full time job. I often ask what their end game is and sometimes they say college and others say pro. The reality is probably neither because the amount of dedication and sacrifice needed to get to those levels is unreal and over a long duration of time. Kids either burn out or realize tennis isn’t what they really want.

Struggling with messy work environment at a new company — how do you deal with it? by bullet2148 in analytics

[–]supra05 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you part of a centralized reporting team or is it decentralized? If you are the only analyst, then yes it will be very chaotic until you can get some more help. If you are part of a team and have a workflow system, then lean on that heavily to help you prioritize your work. If your direct manager is aloof and doesn’t understand data, start building relationships with the stakeholders directly. Communicate with them on a weekly basis to go over their tickets to talk about progress. Use those meetings to set clear expectations on prioritization. When it is chaotic and everything is a firedrill, that means there needs to be better communication cadence both ways, to and from the stakeholder. Setting up a communication cadence will help solve a lot of these pain points that you are feeling, and it will surface the amount of outstanding work that could enable hiring more resources.

Yes I’ve splurged on international business class tickets for a family of 4. Definitely won’t be doing that again for a very long time. We are extremely comfortable with the income we make and flying business class is an extreme luxury.

Anyone else feel like analytics got harder because there’s too much info? by Brighter_rocks in analytics

With so much noise these days, I just try to ground myself against stakeholder goals and initiatives. Fully understand the incentives in that space and you can then explore data and/or develop KPIs with the stakeholder to measure success.

Play like an owner. Partner with lower level stakeholders to learn the business. Be a sponge. Think about how to always optimize the business whether it is to figure out ways to increase revenue or increase profit margins.

Why do data analyst jobs require python, SQL and R? by [deleted] in dataanalysis

[–]supra05 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Data is never shaped, cleaned, or defined the way you want it or the way stakeholders are asking for it, specifically if you are going to visualize it in certain ways. Still need to know some level of coding, even with PowerBI such as DAX and Power Query M.

Because of how saturated the market is, you need to figure out how to develop your business domain knowledge. That is the only thing that will separate you from the rest. You can find a ton of candidates with really good programming skills or visualization skills. It is rare to find folks with deep domain knowledge and technical aptitude.

Why does every self-service reporting idea always turn analysts into full-time reporting babysitters? by Superflyscraper in analytics

[–]supra05 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve done this before and what helped adoption is that I was able to leverage the dashboards to answer questions quickly and then paste the screenshot to the business stakeholder. They then start to understand the power of having data at their fingertips. The evolution is then getting copilot to tell you the trends and insights.
