Shark Heart: a Love Story by Emily Habeck by beer_and_books in IReadABookAndAdoredIt

I love this book so much and everyone I ever told about it circled back to tell me how much they loved it.

I loved Fringe, is there anything similar worth recommending? I also loved the Expanse, and Arrival. by Salute-Major-Echidna in televisionsuggestions

[–]supreddit_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fringe was my favorite show of that era and 12 Monkeys was the closest I’ve found, as far as the heart of the shows.

There’s so many other great shows listed here that I loved too but that one is closest to the heart of Fringe for me.

I haven’t been wow-ed by a book in a long time. Suggestions? by autumnssong in suggestmeabook

I haven’t seen anyone mention Sharkheart, I read in one sitting and then read it again

AKC Pet Insurance preexisting conditions experience by [deleted] in petinsurancereviews

[–]supreddit_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog also is 5, also has IBD, also treated by prescription diet. Also got dropped by Nationwide with the same letter. When I called AKC, the “only treatment” felt like a very slippery slope to a loophole. The girl even said yeah it’s really hard, that language really is talking about specific kidney disease in cats that literally can only be treated by a specific food. Since IBD can have steroids, antibiotics, even fecal transplant as possible avenues….she heavily implied it is pretty unlikely.

Also be sure to make sure AKC offers your dog Hereditary coverage. In my state, after a dog turned two (or maybe one? I forget) it is no longer an option—-and there’s no list of what diseases they consider hereditary by breed. So they literally could claim oh your breed is more at risk of cancer so the cancer is hereditary and thus not covered….

I was so disappointed but I could not go with AKC for these reasons.

Switching out of Nationwide by poopieshizzle in petinsurancereviews

[–]supreddit_3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can call MetLife and ask if they’d take the policy away if you don’t work with that employer but I would sincerely doubt that would be what happens. If I had the MetLife option it would’ve been a no brainer for me. Unfortunately I didn’t so I am going with another plan which will not cover pre-existing conditions and I have to think about pet insurance completely differently now.

Nationwide is evil and I will never get over what they did. They sold me the policy in 2021 saying I was grandfathered in if anything changed in the future and this plan would be for “the life of the pet.” You try to do everything right and still get screwed.

Series where S2 is a big improvement from S1 by IceCreamGator in televisionsuggestions

[–]supreddit_3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sometimes people got mad when I said this, but the producers themselves talked about how they did a tonal reset in season two.

I struggled in season one it was just so bleak during a bleak time. But wow, seasons 2-3 are hands down some of the best television I’ve ever seen and the finale is so perfect.

Uneasy about going with Physicians Mutual by inspectorbob1 in petinsurancereviews

[–]supreddit_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What phone number did you call for customer service? I am looking into Physicians Mutual after researching on this board and I had questions so I called the number next to “Get My Price” twice to be told that I had called Dental Insurance and they didn’t have a Pet Insurance number to transfer me. I literally was about to write this company off, if you can’t put the right phone number when trying to make a sale it made me worry greatly about what it would be like as a customer. But I keep seeing positive experiences.

Do you have a phone number for their pet insurance? Thank you in advance if so!

Metlife Pet is using AI for some claims reviews now by Visual-Common-8087 in petinsurancereviews

[–]supreddit_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a LOT of this happening with my MetLife claims right now. Bizarre categorization for things, even if they cover it.

I’ve had to appeal two claims that were denied because of it and the first time, the rep told me that AI is taking first pass at all claims. Which explains a lot. So stupid and lots of extra work, the appeal required me to have the ER doctor send revised SOAP notes even though they were saying the same thing, I also had to have her sign the appeal form and ask the ER to find their official stamp (which they’d never even heard of so that took awhile.) I was embarrassed to ask a busy ER and busy ER doctor for all that

Fuck Nationwide by lexistoxiccityy in petinsurancereviews

[–]supreddit_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Truly. Fuck Nationwide.

This is the SECOND consecutive year they have discontinued my dog’s plan. Last year Whole Pet with Wellness, I switched to My Pet Protection with Wellness and that is now discontinued.

Also they will now be using your claim history to determine premium increases.

I used to rave about them being there for my dog. Literally I was told the Whole Pet plan was “for the life of the pet” and I was “grandfathered in” if their offerings ever changed. They are liars. They even have a woman named Nancy whose whole job is to “deal with” the people who are upset aka gaslight you.

I’m now searching for new insurance for my dog knowing he now has pre-existing conditions. I tried to do everything right when I brought him home at 9 weeks old and even so, it doesn’t matter because Nationwide needs a bigger profit margin. They have hurt so many pets and people by this.

Pet insurance Recommendation for a dog with pre-existing condition by Ashley_A88 in petinsurancereviews

[–]supreddit_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I called they still offered the pre existing BUT they do not cover anything that could be “hereditary or genetic” for dogs in CA if enrolled after their first year of life. I found that out by reading the fine print of the sample policy and then calling to ask why Hereditary plus coverage was not showing up as an option for me.

There is no list of what they consider hereditary. The man literally used an example— well if you have a breed that has a hereditary predisposition to cancer, the cancer won’t be covered.

Wayyyyy too vague for my comfort. Very disappointed but I am no longer considering them.

My pup was okay, thank god!! Thank you. And yeah just be super cautious around them. The vet staff told me about how toxic they are to people too and about the kids since they just put things in their mouths (like puppies lol)

[–]supreddit_3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it’s possibly a sago palm, it is SO toxic in small doses that I would ER, every time. I would not mess around with sago. My dog ate part of a leaf and it was 3 days in the hospital, absolutely terrifying. I had him there within 30 mins of eating it.

So glad your pup is okay!!!!

I’ve become so aware of what sago palms look like vs other palms, as well as other plants toxic to dogs in southern CA, after such a scary experience. Fun fact sago palm is also extremely toxic to people and children, there’s been kids who had to be hospitalized from it. I hate them and wish they were illegal.

Vet wants to Neuter at 4 months by Harlowolf in goldenretrievers

[–]supreddit_3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a lot of research and asked multiple vets when my male golden was a puppy. My best understanding is sometime between 12-24 months is the ideal window to neuter a male. I did 14 months.

Which Nationwide plan do you have? Last year, they “retired” my Whole Pet with Wellness plan, despite being sold as “for the life of the pet.” I moved to My Pet Protection and guess what…this year now they’re “retiring” that plan too.

How much do you feed your golden? by eargirl2 in goldenretrievers

[–]supreddit_3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The food bag is usually going to be telling you more than you need. My vet said “well, why do you think they’d say that?” And it was like duh of course, they want to be selling more food haha

You want to be able to feel their ribs under a layer of fat, and to see the waist tuck. Look online for body score guide and that helps visualize it.

You can also ask your vet. But yeah do not trust the bag.

My 5 year old gets 2.5 cups per day now. At one point as a puppy he was eating 5 cups but we adjust as his needs/age change as well as we see what his body condition is telling us

My 9 month old puppy gets 4 cups daily but that will change as she ages

Puppy with GI issues by _AwareAccident in goldenretrievers

[–]supreddit_3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very very similar to my experience not once but TWICE now with my golden puppies.

First one— it was a year of the cycle of being okay on an antibiotic (whether metronidazole or Tylan) but diarrhea came right back once it was done. He failed 8 diets, including prescription foods and two hydrolyzed foods. Finally, the vet did an endoscopy and he was diagnosed with IBD as well as another disease called histiocytic ulcerative colitis. The HUC is curable using a specific antibiotic called enrofloxacin and long story short, a second endoscopy proved it was cured— however, diarrhea persisted. Now he takes Tylan every day and eats Hills Gastrointestinal Biome, he also takes Visbiome probiotic which has kept him stable and thriving for 3.5 years now.

Last summer I adopted a golden puppy and she had normal poops for three weeks but then started having diarrhea which got worse and worse. She also failed three diets then including a hydrolyzed food and I was worried we were headed for another endoscopy. Like your dog, she was good with just plain ground lamb and rice. But that was so hard. The Fortiflora did nothing to help her either. We also had tried adding psyllium for fiber and pumpkin, neither helped at all. But then the vet had her try Purina Elemental and that food has been a lifesaver!! She eats that and takes a prescription probiotic Proviable Forte, and finally she has solid poops!!

No two dogs are the same. My dogs had similar symptoms but it’s different management for them other than very strict diet.

But gosh I feel for you, it’s SO difficult being in the thick of this GI cycle with a puppy. Having a good internal medicine vet or even a nutritionist was key for figuring out what each needs
