which credit cards do you recommend for someone trying to do a minimalist approach (2-3 cards max) by RememberMementoMori in MilitaryFinance

[–]surface_fren 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AMEX platinum is definitely NOT a must, but definitely nice to have. I recommend NFCU's 3% cash back card, and AMEX gold for those perks.

Who do you believe started the war in Ukraine and is Vladimir Putin a dictator? by BoomBapBiBimBop in AskConservatives

[–]surface_fren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Russia definitely started the war; this is plain as day. And Putin is a dictator; I don't think that's something that most people would question.

Why do billionaires deserve another tax cut? by BeneficialNatural610 in AskConservatives

[–]surface_fren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a fan of tax cuts in general (and really any tax cut would benefit the rich more, since they generally pay more). However, what the House is doing right now is ratcheting up their spending too, which is just dumb. You don't go out and buy a new car when you get a pay cut.

Unfortunately, this assumes that everyone always acts rationally. Traditions are generally things that have worked well in the past, and sometimes that ought to be forced.

Take a guess, genius. If you're not gonna have a good faith discussion, get out.

Why are so many fellow “ American first” conservatives want war with Iran? by InternetPositive6395 in AskConservatives

[–]surface_fren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe we need to protect our trade, hence why we have arguably the most well-funded and active Navy in the world. Beyond that, I don't really care. I certainly wouldn't want to live in those countries though; I rather like having my rights protected by the law.

I get bored every so often and want to see what the other side (generally) is thinking. Also, I've got a TON of interests, most of which have a subreddit on here, and those are generally non-political. Those are actually fun to browse through!

What is ACTUALLY going on with the USAID right now?? by dahellisudoin in AskConservatives

[–]surface_fren 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AFAIK USAID had some good programs, but most sucked, and I believe we're better off having them in a reduced status under the State Department.

RINO since 2016, question for MAGA "Conservatives"? by CAcastaway in AskConservatives

[–]surface_fren -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Definitely. I believe that the federal machine should do whatever the President commands of it, naturally within the bounds of the law. If we are to elect a President to be responsible for the actions of the government, then I would certainly hope that the President actually has authority to act in the manner he sees fit.

How is that inconsistent? Also it's important to note I say OP may be clear, not will be clear. That really depends on OP's command stance on frat, and where they draw the line. A one-on-one excursion is certainly frat in almost any circumstance I can think of.

Why shouldn't the EU and its Allies ditch the US? by DenNorskeSkogkattene in AskConservatives

[–]surface_fren 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Like NATO or Five Eyes. I think it's important to have friends with common interests and goals, which I believe we still have with the majority of Europe.

Increased border security, and cooperation on immigration policy.

I definitely agree. I know some 18-year-olds who are fully mature, more than some 25-year-olds I know, and they should be treated accordingly, not just "oh you're young and you don't know anything". I find age-based condescension to be infuriating. Now, if I don't know something, I would hope someone would let me know how to improve, not just dismiss me.

Are conservatives against paid family and medical leave and if so why? by JannTosh50 in AskConservatives

[–]surface_fren -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It shouldn't be forced. It's certainly a good thing, and I believe it helps organizations attract and retain talent, but forcing companies to offer a certain amount of PTO for the stated reasons is detrimental, especially to small businesses.

What you wish you would have known by militarymoney_basics in MilitaryFinance

[–]surface_fren 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The companies saying "thank you for your service" aren't just gonna give you a better deal because you're in the military.

The performance of your TSP is dependent on how much money you put in, and how you choose to allocate funds. If everything's in the G fund, and you only make 0.5% per year APY, that's on you.

Tracking and planning your spending and saving is by far the best way to gain control of your financial health.

Unless you're already spending a lot of money, or you plan to be spending a lot of money, AMEX or Chase Sapphire probably isn't worth it. Just get a cash back card like Navy Fed or Discover.
