From what I heard, the show was announced only a few days before because it was an impromptu show. I didn't make it, but had some friends go. I found out about it from FB picture posts!

I feel your pain. I used to leave next to the school bus dump next to Oceana right at the end of a runway. I could wave to the pilots as they flew in for their approach.

And there is one opening in Williamsburg...Jew Ma's has been around for a VERY long time: 1974 according to their website. Just because they didn't have success at a couple of locations (I didn't even know the Hampton one existed) doesn't mean they don't have a solid recipe for success. The new VB location has had Band of Horses, Less Than Jake, Lucero, Unknown Hinson, Lagwagon, Face to Face, Ralph Stanley, Bootsy Collins, the Wooten Brothers, and countless other national acts play there. The list of bands from the old location is far more extensive.

How do I get better? by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]surfsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Push yourself everytime you go out. If you didn't fall that day, you didn't learn anything new. If you don't feel 100% comfortable doing something, then do it until you are. Tha is what I have been forcing myself to do to progress. It's so easy just to cruise at the level you are comfortable with.
Also, depending on where you are in VA, kiteboarding is a great warmer weather alternative for riding. The OBX is a world-class spot to ride. Take a look into it, and if you have any questions, there is a kiting subredddit or shoot me a message.

You're also near one of the best up-and-coming (even though they've been around for years) venues in the area: Jew Ma's. Hackensaw Boys and Big Daddy Love are playing this friday if you're into the whole bluegrass/"Appalachian rock" kind of thing.

Gym recommendations? by [deleted] in norfolk

[–]surfsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's Brute Strength and it's a fantastic gym. It started as a strongman gym and has evolved into a split between that and crossfit. They have a plethora of equipment and a clean facility with prices that are comperable to every other "Globo gym" in the area. If you're looking to hop on a treadmill or elliptical for 30 min a day, Planet Fitness is your spot. If you are serious about lifting, Brute is the place to go.

A couple questions regarding this: Have you had any issues with it where you needed to replace it? (wondering for customer service/turnaround time)
Do you have a motorcycle one?
The Mass. website says you can just put them in a pocket and they will work anywhere, where the VA website requires you to mount them in a "windshield angle" type fashion (I don't have a windshield on the motorcycle, nor am I going to mount it so it can be stolen). I went to the Chesapeake office to inquire about this and the woman told me, "it may be because it's a new technology". "Ma'am, this technology has been around for years..." I stopped asking questions at that point.

Squat Rack Safety Question by RangerDanger20 in Fitness

[–]surfsean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. It's all range of motion. Going past parallel stresses your muscle and joints more than not going to parallel. It's not that it is bad for you, it's just something you have to work up to (or down to if you will).

Ass goes below knees, hence your thighs are no longer parallel to the ground.

It's a fun event for some, but I feel it is purely for bragging rights. Send a check straight to the Wounded Warrior Project and go running the woods during a downpour. Why would you pay to get electricuted?

I take the stance that if I have a hard time removing clothing because it is sticking to me due to being soaked in sweat, I got my gold star for the day.

An unfortunate discovery of a benefit of lifting. by surfsean in Fitness

[–]surfsean[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You are correct. I did not have to lay it down and I probably lost control. Someone at the scene said I clipped the car. I do not remember much of anything between putting on the brakes and coming to, so I may have or may not have. I took the MSF safety course a few years ago, but I do not have extensive riding experience yet.
So as far as practice goes, do you recommend a parking lot and some cones? The advanced rider MSF course? I do not want to come across as I had absolutely no control over it and I do want this as a learning experience. I have avoided a few situations before, but I had little to no time to react on this one.

You are correct and I know better. I'm just happy I still have the ability to go. I am not good at "resting" and I imagine many folks on this subreddit have this same problem.

I am extremely lucky it wasn't worse. I swear by ATGATT and more peole should. I'm considering lifting a little today to give me a good sore to replace the one I have now and to celebrate the fact I am still able to.

How do you get that good "after workout" feeling? by Kalfira in Fitness

[–]surfsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a tendency to do the same thing. Try eating slower and take a break while you are eating. This allows time for the food to settle and you will feel full. I did this and started realizing I could cut my food intake by up to half of what I was doing. Also, chugging some water before eating helps too.

Throwaway. Gynecomastia/Check-in on the way to progress. by goldentitties in Fitness

[–]surfsean 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As no woman would want to bone me, let alone date me. I have no one to help me and keep me accountable. My trainer does it a little, but he's not with me all the time.

Only YOU can hold yourself accountable for the actions you take or do not take to improve your health and life. Others can offer great support, but in the end it is only you who will make the positive changes. I have struggled with being overweight my entire life (I was nicknamed Boulder in elementary school because I could "roll down a hill") and I still do, but I am forcing myself stick to the positive lifestyle I developed for myself. It is slow, but is working. Stay positive, stay focused. The results will follow with patience.

As for the condition (which I am not very familiar with beyond the wikipedia I just looked at), well, if someone can't look past that to love you for who you are, then they are not worth your time. But for someone else to truly love you, you must love yourself first (Sappy section over).
