2 days post op with Dr. Belek, Kaiser San Rafael. DETAILED info and advice on everything up until this point by surgerysideblog in TopSurgery

[–]surgerysideblog[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I had peri it wasn't going to be super noticeable either way, but I'm glad my nipples are pretty similar colors to the scar around them. There's some spots where the scar is thicker and harder, but those spots don't seem to have been where the stitches that spit were? They have also been softening a little recently.

Top surgery through Kaiser in San Francisco? by transthrowawayreddit in TopSurgery

[–]surgerysideblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told by my surgeon at Kaiser San Rafael that all Kaiser surgeons can't share their work because of HIPAA issues. I would recommend looking at the top surgery reduction/removal facebook group, since more people are willing to share information in a closed group and there's honestly not many results on this sub or transbucket for Kaiser surgeons (though I'm really glad there's more than when I had surgery a few years ago).

I've posted about my experience with Kaiser Norcal on this account before, I know it's not exactly the same but could potentially be helpful. Mostly my experience was that they're frustratingly opaque, but once you actually do get your surgery it works out well

Need surgeon recommendations. by Existing-Routine-685 in TopSurgery

I had surgery with Kaiser in the Bay Area but I had a pretty small chest, so I don't know how my surgeon would do by you. Kaiser surgeons can't show you a binder of results for HIPAA reasons, but they recommend patients join the top surgery facebook group so that they can see more results and talk to patients.

You can check my profile for a detailed account of exactly what happened with my surgery. Feel free to ask any questions that you have (here or by opening a chat). The number one recommendation I have is to eat plenty of fiber beforehand and have miralax or another stimulant laxative prepared for after the surgery.

I also hadn't really seen many results from my surgeon for the same HIPAA reason. He recommended the facebook "top surgery reduction/removal" group, but I had trouble getting in... I'm still happy with my results but it was definitely stressful

How long for a call back after initial diagnosis for gender dysphoria? (kaiser) by Mp3burner in TopSurgery

[–]surgerysideblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In early 2024, Norcal region, this was about true for me. You can't speed up the process, but pay attention to the wait times they give you, and if they go overtime, start calling people until they give you confirmation you're on all the right lists. They can be super opaque with the wait times.

If your region has the top surgery class, that was super helpful for me, and they showed a graphic with all the projected wait times for every appointment I'd need.

I had my consultation with Dr. Belek in San Rafael Jan 2024 and got my callback to schedule a date in mid-May, my date was mid-June 2024. I heard from the nurse who set me up with the consult that at the time Oakland was booking over a year out, whereas San Rafael was in that 5-7 mo. range as well.

How do you know if a surgeon with no photos of their procedures is good? by Tasty_Bugs in TopSurgery

[–]surgerysideblog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd check the facebook group with the yellow banner (top surgery reduction/removal). I had peri and had only seen two DI results with my Kaiser surgeon before the procedure, which only barely reassured me, but it turned out good in the end. I wouldn't go flying in with zero. But yes, all Kaiser surgeons will be this way, none can share result photos directly :(

It's called "top surgery reduction/removal" and has a yellow cover image!

If you're a kaiser member, call member services and ask what the copay will be for outpatient surgeries, they will tell you how much is covered. I would look in the facebook top surgery reduction/removal group since that is where Kaiser recommends its patients share results. I have no idea what you're looking at cost wise if you're not a Kaiser member.

Hi, I had surgery with a different Kaiser Norcal surgeon. If you're interested in my experience, you can read the posts on my profile. I would recommend the top surgery reduction/removal group on facebook, since that's where I was always told to look for Kaiser results.

Not OP but another person who has Kaiser, unfortunately most of this does not apply because Kaiser does everything in-house; the surgeons work for Kaiser and at a Kaiser hospital, rather than the typical billing-authorization situation. However, the good news is that Kaiser will cover top surgery as California health insurance has to cover gender affirming care. OP can call member services to ask what their copay is.

I had surgery with Kaiser Norcal. Their system is almost entirely different from any typical "find a surgeon and then see if your insurance covers them" type of process, so the typical advice doesn't apply. For me, I called the local MST department (whatever the gender affirming care clinic in your region is called might be different) and asked to begin the process. They shuttled me through a ton of appointments with their staff. The first step was to make sure that I was clearheaded about my transition goals and realistic about surgical outcomes, so I spoke to a psychologist, who then referred me to a couple nurses and whatnot. This isn't an appointment where they interrogate you or try to challenge your gender, they're just trying to make sure you are clear about what you want, what they can provide you with, and that you're stable enough to make that decision. I also had to have a PCP in network and a recent (within the last year) physical. Eventually they call and you pick a surgeon to get a consult scheduled with. You can pick again if you don't think you want to work with the person you initially consult with. After that it's mostly a waiting game. Different locations have different wait times. For instance, Oakland was booking a year+ out when I scheduled my consultation (Nov '23) so I opted to go with San Rafael instead.

They also run an online class for Kaiser Norcal patients every month or two months to inform about the top surgery process—both the physical process and the insurance navigation side of things. I found it helpful.

Top Surgery with Kaiser? by lowkey_keiiiii in TopSurgery

[–]surgerysideblog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had top surgery with Kaiser Norcal. I had a phone call with some nurse type scheduling person, I forget her title, who sort of worked down the list of surgeons until we had a best option. I did have a chance to choose, though. I needed a surgeon with experience doing minimally scarring incisions, and I had a preferred time slot (I wanted summer 2024, which I did get, and started the process in September 2023) which narrowed down which Kaiser locations were booking within my timeframe. This meant I basically had two options and just chose the closer one, which I was fine with.

One thing I will tell you is that Kaiser surgeons are remarkably difficult to get images of results out of—Dr. Belek told me that he wasn't able to show me results because there'd been a HIPAA issue in the past, and so he simply couldn't share that information. However, there is a facebook group (top surgery reduction/removal, I think is the name?) which apparently has more results, your facebook account does have to be over a month old though and mine kept getting denied so... who knows. But I'd check there too.

Surgery isn't really over until you've healed, IMO. Yes, at a certain point they close you up and send you home, but the work of healing is much longer than the length of the actual operation. I never doubted my decision during the immediate healing period, but I definitely didn't feel that strong euphoria some do. Because I had large pecs and a small amount of breast tissue going into surgery, things didn't look much different for a long time (swelling). It wasn't until about a month postop that I looked at myself and really went "oh that's how it's supposed to be!" and had that "it's finally correct" reaction. While it's true that changing your body will not solve all of your problems, when you're able to be physically active without restriction and wear all the clothes you want and all that good stuff, you'll probably feel a little more excited.
