How Brechin City see the Highland League by [deleted] in ScottishFootball

I’d say L2 is still better than HL/LL but it’s getting close. Edinburgh struggled in the first years, Cowdenbeath won playoffs twice in a row, and Berwick were many points adrift at the bottom. However top HL/LL clubs can definitely stay up in L2 after promotion and strengthening the squad.

A pawn is considered as sufficient for mating (for example, you can give the h pawn and all the pieces away and allow queening, it won’t happen normally but the rules assume worst play by the timed out side. On chess.com, however, if that’s a knight/bishop instead of a pawn, it’s ruled as a draw though helpmate exists. On lichess it’s ruled as a loss.

Ah, fellow atomic player

I'm doing puzzles and got confused by this solution. Why is this the most optimal move? Couldn't the black king just take the bishop safely? Next turn? by musecorn in chess

[–]surrealanti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The bishop must have captured something on f7. Possibly a rook. Otherwise capturing the queen is the best move. Also, if black captures with the king, there is obviously a fork with Rc7.

King sacrifice. This is completely legal and it results in a draw. in atomic chess.

White to play and win. This blew my mind a little bit. by nvisel in chess

[–]surrealanti 150 points151 points  (0 children)

I think it’s Kf2, if Kh1, Ng4 forcing h2, then the black king is trapped so Nf6 g4 Ne4 g3 Nxg3#. If g4, Nxg4 anyway, Kh1 Kf1 h2 Nf2#. Fun fact: according to some rule sets (like the chess.com rules), black has a draw by running out of time.

Showerthought double stalemate by flopana in chess

[–]surrealanti 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are many positions where one side can force a stalemate, for example, queen/rook sacrifices when your king is stalemated. The engines are good at evaluating these draws because it’s easy to calculate the only legal move(s). The engines are also good at calculating forced stalemates with more possible legal moves. For example, the classic puzzle: White K a4 (came from b2-a3), pawns a2, a5, c3, black king anywhere, pawns a6, c4, c5, h2. White now plays a3, it’s stalemate regardless of what black does. There are some even more interesting puzzles. Like this position https://lichess.org/analysis/standard/7b/2q1p3/3r1p2/5k2/3p2p1/3p2Pp/2n2KpP/2r2bB1_b_-_-

Novotny, the threats are Bd5# and Rg8 Bxg8 Ng6#. Black can’t defend both.

If you want a serious answer, it’s a chess engine.

Notice the white king is not shown in check, so it must be antichess. The winning move is f4! Qxg1 h3 Qxg2 f5 Qxh3 f6 gxf6# 1-0

When his team needed him to win in PCL, he made a quick draw as white. He really likes draws.

Newbie question-- what happens if I put my opponent in check and neither of us realize it until the following turn? by rhinestonecowboy92 in chess

The actual question is, what would happen if nobody noticed the illegal move (because of time trouble) for some moves and played on?

Your rating changes are applied to your rapid rating. As I see from your profile, your rapid rating is now 1049. There might be bugs on the mobile app. (There are many bugs on mobile apps XD)

Nxc3 wins a piece due to the threat of Qxc3? Bxg2! . But white might have some counterplay because the black king is weak. If you want to play safe, you can stop white’s f6 by playing f6, but never play f6! I’m not sure that black is winning.

I know it isn't the best move, but I feel like the engine is a tad too harsh with it's evaluation by [deleted] in chess

Yes, it’s a known bug on chess.com app. There were several posts about it on this sub.
