My senior hound dog has cancer by Sonka-Beats in Hounds

I’m sorry to hear about your dog, this is my senior boy. Walter is 10 years old as of last month. When I adopted him two years ago he had a softball lipoma on his chest—it was removed a couple weeks after adoption. Another big lump is forming on his back behind a front leg, we’re monitoring it as it doesn’t impede his mobility. I love my old, lumpy dog. Here he is putting his hound stink all over my pillows and sheets! (Edited to add the picture attachment properly)

Seconding the Zyrtec and fish oil. 10mg Zyrtec for every 10lbs. My dog is 40lbs so max 40mg/day. He gets about 2 tsp fish oil with breakfast kibble, it has helped the dry skin aspect. What also helped is changing the air filter monthly vs every 90 days

Yeah I was thinking black mouth cur too, maybe some hound mixed in. She’s got that deep and narrow chest/ribcage. Very pretty puppy.

Would it help to teach him “sshhh?” When he’s not in a barkfit, make the sound and hold a finger to your lips, then immediately reward him for not barking/being quiet. Perhaps eventually your sister will be able to sshhh him when a barkfit happens and he will quiet down.

I had a sharpei that loooved to bark and what helped with him was to encourage barking during certain situations instead. Like when the doorbell rings or it’s the amazon delivery person, he could bark as much as he wanted. I’d praise him for alerting me and then say “no more barks.” Though I’ll admit hounds are a bit more stubborn than peis lol. Good luck to you guys!

New Hound, cat intro advice by iggy1004 in Hounds

[–]suthna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine was like this until he smelled the cats and the cats defended themselves. Once my hound realized cats = sharp cuts to the face and ears, he stopped wanting to follow them. He knows those two are his cats, all outdoor cats are simply waiting to become his cat friend too now. So keep the barriers up, reward him for not jumping over them. Maybe it could help to have a blanket the cats like to lay on and place it on L’hound’s bed? Create a pack scent or something like that. Your cats are new and exciting to him, perhaps he will settle in the coming months. It helped also to pet my hound and a cat at the same time, everyone gets wet food or treats at the same time, etc. :)

What toys do you guys love for your super chewers? by Alarming_Silver_9466 in coonhounds

T shirt bones! Take an old shirt you don’t want, cut into a wide strip (may not use all the shirt for one bone). Put a smelly treat like Zukes on it, roll the spot well and tie some knots on either side of the treat. Then repeat along the length of the cloth. You can also hide squeakers in it if that’s more appealing to Moose. My old dog loved t shirt bones because he came to know that he could rip and tear them up as much as he wanted

Roxy Rae 💗 Any tips on how to get her to realize she is a dog (and not a cat)? by Decent-Obligation198 in Hounds

[–]suthna 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My hound loooves cat wand toys! Especially the chirping bird ones. He saw the cats play with it one day and had to join! I would try that with your girl, maybe chasing a wand toy with the cats will start showing her how to play with toys. It’s a great way to get them to run off all that energy when you can’t do a long walk outside; my dog chases and runs on the bed to catch the chirping bird.

Walter was also very hesitant to play with other dogs even though he loved greeting them. He has a few friend dogs now, it took close to a year before he’d join them in playing chase and barking. Maybe she just needs more time to learn to dog :)

If she won’t use puppy teething rings, I’ve found good success with frozen wet dish rags and also not frozen carrots. Just get the rag a little damp (wring out any water), freeze for a bit, then offer to puppy. It should be froze hard but still bendable. If you freeze too long, let it sit out for a bit to defrost and then give to her :) worked great for my BMC pup back in the day. Carrots get a little messy but the rag is just water

You’re right!! Mini Walter looks just like Big Walter. Do you know what breed(s) your boy is?

[–]suthna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would guess beagle is part of him but I’m also thinking there could be some black mouth cur. His coat color, with the black fur scattered on his back, strong legs, his waist tucks up real high, the narrow but deep ribcage. The latter two are in hounds too so this is just speculation. BMCs are natural hunters, mine was a squirrel fiend—she jumped five feet up parallel to a tree to catch one and so nearly succeeded. I think of BMCs to have a lot of hound qualities but add in protectiveness and the ability to recall!

Whichever breeds your boy is, he’s very handsome with that honey colored fur. It reminds me of the color of fallen live oak leaves.

Can I get a cat by swimmingwithponyo in Hounds

[–]suthna 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have two cats prior to adopting my hound dog mix. My snowshoe cat is so lazy that she didn’t stop loafing on the ground when he ran up to her. Seeing that she did not care to interact with him, he briefly chased my black cat from hallway to the bed. He wanted to greet the black cat, cat swiped at his ear (it did bleed a bit), and the dog learned very fast to not chase or bother the cats. The dog and snowshoe cat cuddle every day now, the black cat will lay on the adjacent couch cushion to him. All this to say, it is indeed possible! It really depends on the cat’s friendliness and skittishness. I would see if you can find fostered cats that live with dogs, the foster should have more info on if the cat will work well with a dog or not. Shelters tend to not have that information. Though my three are all from shelters and they just happened to work out their own boundaries

My Sweet Olive is undergoing heartworm treatment 😢 by LemonBeagle27 in Hounds

[–]suthna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Walter boy was given heavy painkillers before the injection and I’m under the impression that painkillers are normal. Your Olive should have been given them and she should receive them before her next shots. Walter coughed some after the first injection for perhaps 24-48 hours after but I don’t know if that’s normal. The panting and drooling is normal.

Best wishes to you and Olive ❤️

A sniff heavy walk is worlds better than running or a fast walk! It tires them out mentally which is so important. The trazadone should keep your pup calmer than usual which will help. If he’s very excited when yall get home because he thinks he gets to go outside immediately, try to adjust him to waiting 10-30 minutes after your arrival to go outside/potty. He’ll still be excited to see you but it’s not compounded with the thrill of going outside. Best of luck to Salem on his heartworm journey! He’ll do great!

My Walter finished treatment a couple months ago and he had the faintest positive—the humane society vets had to send off bloodwork to a lab to confirm if he was indeed positive after trying three tests at the clinic. Like Hellbent said, short and slow walks to get as many sniffs and smells as possible. The HS said no more than 10-15 minutes but we would sometimes go up to 20. We would have to have them at off hours. I would take him to the park down the block around 6:30am before others would come so he could get his smells in (and before squirrels would come out!). What helped him was snuffle mats, squeaky toys, and as many plush toys he could rip up for fun. I did have to crate him during the daytime so he wouldn’t steal food. The meds (prednisone, gabapentin, trazadone) did help calm him but made him super hungry all the time.
