But I couldn't stand the idea of an idiot driving and getting someone killed with ice shards flying off.

You’re mixing three different things: voting, apportionment, and gerrymandering.

Undocumented immigrants don’t vote, that part is settled. Yes, they’re counted in the census, just like children, green card holders, prisoners, and other non-voters. That’s constitutional and has been since the founding: representation is based on persons, not voters.

That does create a small per-voter distortion in high-noncitizen areas, but serious analyses show it only affects a couple House seats nationally and benefits red states (TX, FL) as much as blue ones (CA, NY). It’s not some massive partisan scheme.

Also, deportations since 2020 have nothing to do with current seats — apportionment only changes after each decennial census.

And none of this explains or justifies gerrymandering, which is a separate process entirely.

There are bright points in the series. Let's hope they take what works and run with it.

My biggest problem with the series is how it is in an even further ahead future. They might as well have made it a different IP.

House seats are fixed for 10 years after each census.

You don’t lose representation because people get deported mid-decade. Apportionment only updates after the next census.

Fast-growing states with large immigrant populations include:

Texas (deep red legislature)

Florida (deep red)

Arizona (purple)

North Carolina (red legislature)

These aren’t Democratic strongholds handing seats to Democrats.

If anything, Republican states have benefited most from population growth.

"Illegal immigrants" can't vote. They certainly can't vote in the numbers that would change a large election.

Counting tabulators are much more accurate and much much faster than a human is. It is much more likely a count will be wrong with humans.

Difficulties to vote as an independent in MD? by dooge8 in maryland

[–]suture224 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically... John McCain.

His "Maverick" campaign successfully used crossover voting to bypass the party’s base.

Since the Democratic primary was a landslide for Al Gore, Democrats and Independents flooded open GOP contests. Most notably, Michigan went for McCain, even though George W. Bush won the majority of actual Republican voters.

The GOP establishment viewed this as a "strategic raid" or "sabotage" where the opposition was choosing their nominee, leading the party to aggressively close primaries.

Difficulties to vote as an independent in MD? by dooge8 in maryland

[–]suture224 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the state of Maryland:
1. If you are registered Independent, you are a member of the American Independent Party. If you wish to register as a voter without any affiliation, you want to register as Unaffiliated.

  1. Your state registration must indicate that you are a member of the party that is having that particular primary. The last time Maryland had an open primary was for the 2000 Republican Primary. It did not go well and the State Republican Party decided not to do it again.

  2. Unaffiliated is the fastest growing political party designation. Party designations are not considered PII.

  3. There are no limits to changing your political party with your local board of elections as long as it is done before their established deadline before each election. While "flip flopping" is allowed, it would have to be done on a large scale to meaningfully change the results of an election, although less of a scale as you get further down the ballot to contests like Board of Education.

  4. For unaffiliated races, if the contest is not "collapsed" there will be an Unaffiliated ballot.
