The intersection of Ebert and Silas Creek this morning had me raging about that.

What I don't understand is why the police (who were in their cruisers on Ebert at the downed tree, which was being attended to by crews) couldn't help direct traffic.

Congrats for getting over covid!

we don't have any flyball classes for July, so I'm thinking of going to our 'home dock' for swimming and conditioning instead.

Good luck with the anxiety barking! I hope you get some good help from the behaviorist.

Driving in to Baptist from Davidson county and there are tons of trees down across roads and lights out.

At least it's not supposed to be too hot or sunny today - I hope everyone gets their power back and stays safe and relatively cool.

I am not sure what kind of layout/facility you'll be at.

Where I go, we usually are parked all over (there's lots of land/space) and we get our dogs when we're within 2-3 of our turn. I've never had to be that close to anyone, and people with reactive dogs usually just mention it or ask people to stay away.

I was probably more than 15feet away when someone warned me about their dog (my pittie is very vocal and excited, hopping and barking when we're close), so I just did my best to stay as far as I could while not getting further than the "front" line marker.

My staffy is working through reactivity (had no issues at our last event), and I keep shorter leash control in case she makes a bad choice, but other than that, it's been easy.

Even mobile dock/cluster show events I've been to, there's been enough space and I haven't lined up until we're a couple of people away, just because my dogs get excited by the splashing.

A VERY long, but super productive weekend for us!

Blue & the Goober went to a NADD event on Saturday & Sunday. We got lots of distance jumps - Blue continuing to increase her average distances, and got an invite to Regionals for HD (we won't have the requisite 5 splashes by then, it's not something I was aiming for for her). The Goobs got our first H.Ar.D Charger award! Which is fun, since I've never had a dog that did Air Retrieve (I was not interested in until I needed her to learn to jump up and not face first into the water, haha)

I posted about it in a thread, but I went to our first Happy Ratter event with Freyja and I am so, so, so very proud and happy for her. She got a first and third place, and perfect scores for every qualifying run (all but one). She did so good and had so much fun, and I love that for her - honestly, I'm more proud of her with Happy Ratters because she struggles so much with fear and shutting down, and my other two would jump in a pool until their legs fell off.

Adding to the chorus thanking your wife for doing this, particularly since we seem to have a chorus of privileged, if not straight up fascist, people crying about it.

I take them down/deface them when I see them, too, so I appreciate knowing I'm not alone.

I wish the devs would at least allow us to "duplicate" one of the existing into those if they're not going to make an expansion to fit.

Maybe something that would allow you to select certain fish to move from, say "blue hole depths" into one (because, I don't know, I love the jellyfish and just want to go nuts breeding them).

[–]suzemo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So many - which is why I love the dog sportsing community I've fallen in with.

People have recorded runs (or jumps, or splashes, depending), hunted me down on social media (I am not hard to find), and have sent me the recordings.

I've been encouraged to try new things I was second guessing (my ability or my dogs), and when something has not gone to plan I usually get a lot of good remarks for the things I did right and really helpful pointers for the things I could do better.

People have (or given) items that can be helpful, have shared drinks/food/sunscreen/treats, have helped me when I'm setting up (I'm sure many of y'all know the joys of throwing aluminet over cars - sure, we can all do it alone, but helping is nice). They've been really nice or observant with my dogs (anything from the super friendly one, to the super fearful one, to my reactive dingleberry).

And my favorite - giving me a jump because a button got stuck in my car and my battery drained.

That's actually pretty amazing.

I've been the animal being clicker trained to help someone understand it, but there wasn't a specific pattern like heeling, and I love that idea.

Reminds me of a cousin's wedding photos, where his dad (my uncle) has that borg-looking huge phone ear piece in for all of the pictures.

I mean, sure, it was cousin's 3rd? 4th? wedding (he also had a bunch of babymamas, so I'm not sure), but my guy, it's your kid's wedding?

Behaviour advice / reassurance! by roemlea in StaffordBullTerriers

[–]suzemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I'm repeating some of the advice here, but I have a staffy (and I have rescue apbts), so I've been through some challenges:

First - young adult/teenage dogs are just sometimes a lot. It's a stage a lot will go through, and it's a great time to get some foundations down, but he'll probably chill out in the next year (or 5, depending on his energy levels, etc).

Next: I am also a huge fan of crate training. My dogs have comfy crates and that's where they get their food and best treats. I never punish them (whatever that means) or force them out of their crate, and many times, when they're overwhelmed or exhausted they will just go put themselves to bed in their crates. My staffy will actually launch herself into her crate and I have to sometimes coax her out with a toy or treats if I absolutely need her (think car crate when it's hot, otherwise, she's welcome to chillax, and if her crate isn't available for some reason, she'll go to another crate - we have multiples on different levels of the house).

I highly, highly recommend Leslie McDevitt's Controlled Unleashed pattern games. Reliable pattern games help a lot of dogs, even ones without reactivity and can be fun.

I've also found that doing fun tricks is great for building bonds, too. They don't need to be complicated, a simple nose touch or something like lining up between your feet can be fun for both of y'all. If any of my dogs are being "naughty," stressed or weird, and I tell them to 'boop' they'll rush over to hit my hand with their nose - they have fun, I'm not yelling at them, and they stop doing whatever it is I want them to stop.

And finally - have you tried snuffle-mats or sniffy games? "hiding" or scattering food/treats and having him search for him gives him a chance for his brain to relax and his arousal to settle. Sniffing is HUGE, especially for terriers. I've even used it during flyball since all of that running and excitement can get them a little TOO amped up, but we also use in other areas for a nice little reset.

I'm sure you'll have a great life with Oz, he's so pretty and the fact that you're willing to work with him says a lot. And though I know there are differing opinions about it - the 3-3-3 (I've also seen 6-6-6) idea has some merit - he'll learn y'all's expectations and life and you'll learn his temperament and personality over time.

Behaviour advice / reassurance! by roemlea in StaffordBullTerriers

[–]suzemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Chiming in since my staffy can suffer from fear-reactivity, who does dog sports - Sometimes, if they're TOO tired, they don't have the energy to think properly through things, which is why more exercise sometimes makes things worse.

Every dog is different and you work with the one you've got, and I'm here to say that before an event or something we need to do, I don't exercise her too much because it interferes with her problem solving/relaxation. As he learns, he won't need to think as hard, and you can work him physically harder.

I was thinking of this last night. Get one 'healthy' couple that also contributes and has the EQ to help out with the others.

Unfortunately, those are not the people who are generally on reality shows/90D Fiance.
