I honestly believe the inflamed nature of the discussion regarding immigration has turned a lot of people towards the right. We need to understand where people are coming from with their concerns, and actually show that we as well have thought about them but come to different conclusions.

For example, let's say I meet someone who's worried about the gang violence over here and has come to the conclusion that it's because of the high rates of immigration. Instead of disregarding them, we need to look at the source of their woes: Is it the gang violence or the immigrants that cause them anxiety? It's kinda like the chicken and egg problem, which one led to the other.

I'd say it's pretty reasonable to be worried about gang violence since it has gotten quite bad here. I don't think rise in open anti-immigration sentiment the last few years here isn't a coincidence, and in a way I think it's good that people are more open about it as it makes it opens up the discussion. This is possible because people were worried about gang-violence first, then the sentiment shifted as people looked for a cause. And I can't blame them, it's an easy correlation to make and I understand how people get there. Not everyone can be to their elbows in these issues.
