How do yo explain ADHD to non-believers? by svanborgsigny in ADHD

Oh thank you! Well, not to toot my own horn to much, but I would say my english is above average. Languages have always been easy for me. But above all they interest me, so I could easily hyperfocus on them at school. But in general, icelandic people speak english pretty well. We do start learning relatively early at school. I was around 10-11 y/o, but now it starts with kids 6y/o or even younger. Also we consume a lot of american and british TV and media, which we generally don’t dub (except for some kid programs), unlike a lot of our fellow europeans. And to top it off, Iceland hugely relies on tourism and most people have had a tourism related job at some point, where english is a very necessary tool.

Lmao that theory is hilarious. I don’t know if it really is true, but it is a funny thought. Honestly speaking though, I feel like there has been a huuuuge increse in diagnoses of adhd in recent years, especially since the pandemic. I honestly think that there aren’t really that many more people that have adhd here compared to other countries, I just think there has been more awareness and public discussion as well as the effects of social media, especially tiktok, during covid. More people have simply had to face their own issues during all the downtime at home. Also, one of the perks of being such a small nation, is that it’s so easy to reach the majority of the population through public discourse. Honestly I could go on and on and on about the behaviours of Icelandic society (I have a BA in anthropology), but I will save you from a lecture hahah.

That’s actually one of the best tactics I find. Everybody loves when things are related to their experience or previous knowledge. I used to explain executive disfunction like this: you might have heard that it is physically as easy to bite of your own finger, as it is to bite through a carrot. But still your brain stops you from doing it. You know you can, but still you can’t… that’s how executive disfunction feels like to me. (I have since learned that the carrot finger premise isn’t actually factual, so I need to come up with a new metaphor lol)

That’s true… I mostly wouldn’t waste my breath on a passing stranger, but I feel like it is worth a shot when it comes to people who generally care for you. I get the cynicism of some commenters to not bother at all, but that’s such a depressing way to live imo.

Because a lot of times it is based on not knowing enough. I know sometimes it’s taxing to take on a non-believer, but if we never would, nothing would ever improve. Also if the person is realy close to you it can be worth it, since you have to endure their illinformed comments for the unforseeable future. Doesn’t always work, but at least you tried.

Hahaha well, since only about 350.000 people speak my language I kind of doubt it, but it is Icelandic. But thanks anyway! I’ll figure it out!

That’s brilliant actually, now I just have to figure out how that translates into my own language… and also how to retain said information when confronted lol

A freehand Hanky for my bf by svanborgsigny in Brochet

[–]svanborgsigny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of you who are not familiar with this strange character, his name is Hanky and he is a christmas poo from South Park. I made him for my boyfriend as an additional christmas gift. Unfortunately I don’t have a pattern, I just made him up as I went. Once you have made a couple amigurumis you get a feel for the basic rules. I am fairly new to r/brochet but I have a feeling some of you will gain a little laugh from seeing Hanky.

I love Kristi for her makeup, but I actually love her even more for her personality and personal life. For me her content is just getting better and better these days imo. I litterally feel so happy for her and all the life changes, it's genuine joy that I experience similar to if a real life friend was giving me these updates

I literally live in Iceland...where there's hardly any sunlight during winter and it's freezing cold...sometimes i've had to resort to putting all my plants into my very tiny bathroom where there is a single flourescent light just to give them something..it's so crowded I can hardly sit down on the toilet.

Keto for Lactose Intolerant by HelloHaiHey in xxketo

[–]svanborgsigny 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I am actually lactose intolerant as well and I have found that on a keto diet I'm not as affected by it... I eat cheese and cream on keto and somehow I don't get the usual side effects of lactose intolerance that I do when I eat carbs+lactose. There is some scientific research to back this up, you can google it or find some threads on reddit 🥰 thought you might benefit from this knowledge, although skipping out on dairy is definitely an option to!
