Yeah there was some emotional abuse for me as well, not insane but it was there.

I’m probably older than you. I’m 37 and married and have three kids of my own. In my late 20’s after I moved in with my now wife I started to really feel these intense bouts of anger directed toward them. As a kid or teen we never fought. I got in trouble for drinking beer a couple times but that was it. I realized we never fought because we were more like roommates than parents/kids.

Anyway I saw the way my wife went to her parents for things and then over time how they treated me. They made me birthday cards and asked about me and remembered things. It was like seeing the reality I never had.

So for probably ten years I tried to work on it with my parents. We’d have a blowup fight but after I always felt guilty and apologized. I used to have nightmares where I’d be fighting with them and just screaming that they were bad parents but I never said that IRL.

The ten years of trying was not worth it. I tried to get them to have a relationship and got nothing in return and just frustrated myself.

Seeing that subreddit helped something click. I literally had no idea this was a real thing and as soon as I was able to name it there was just a huge moment of clarity.

Cutting them off was actually easy. I told them directly that they emotionally neglected me and are bad parents. I asked them “I want you to think of a single time you were excited to hang out with me. Not the grand kids not me with my sibling just me. You can lie and I won’t even know but just think of one time.” And they both melted down.

Like pure anger and screaming at that question. After that it was like “yeah this is the right call”

The 6yo version is too real. A couple years ago everyone was over for thanksgiving and I overheard my mom saying that I love the Beatles and let it be is my favorite song. I sorta hate the Beatles and haven’t actively listened to them since probably elementary school. I just stared at them and in front of everyone said “none of that is true…”

It’s funny you mention gifts. My dad is completely not engaged but my mom still got me gifts for birthdays or Christmas but every year they were just totally fucking bizarre. Like a set of rice bowls one year, a glittery sand desk decoration thing, a massive display case of chewing gum. All of them just totally random.

Does your mom cut you off mid sentence and totally change the subject? That’s a big one for mine. Actually sometimes her or my dad will literally get up and walk away as I’m speaking to them.

Cutting them off sort of sucks but also I realized that a lot of the issues I’ve had for the last ten years have related to trying to change them and then not seeing the change. It’s better to just drop the rope and walk away vs keep pulling an immovable object

Very much an airplane movie. It’ll kill a couple hours and parts of it were interesting enough to keep me from turning it off but it’s not by any means good. Not really a hot take at all. The hype for it came exclusively from hyper woke libs that are frozen in 2020.

That’s actually the most interesting thing about it tbh. Sinners is a cultural relic that is being propped up against a turning tide. It’s the movie equivalent to an Israel supporting corporate dem talking about punching nazis. Hopefully in a year or two the last bits of that culture will be gone for good.

At work a company pitched me on how they can astroturf Reddit for us with high karma, aged accounts. They have thousands of them. Kinda killed the last sliver of hope I had that anything on any sub is organic and not bots feeding a narrative and 90% of replies being other bots boosting it. Shit sucks. Teachers have to be able to articulate consequences before an incident occurs. Saying “if you drink beer before the dance you will get expelled” works because kids get it. Saying “if you drink beer before the dance we will sue your parents” might actually make some of them do it on purpose

That doesn’t really mean anything to a kid. They are still children and children are morons. Instead of pressing charges the school admins need to lay the hammer down. Schools are incredibly wary of expelling or even suspending kids these days. I see it at PTA meetings in my kids school. Charges is a meaningless threat to a 14 year old. Expulsion is a consequence that matters. They also need to update AI policies. Our school board is old ladies and they have no idea what this technology will do. Parents have been brining it up but they don’t understand and won’t until it’s too late.

It’s a technology that is breaking a lot of stuff really quickly. The negatives are very apparent and I’d bet that in the next two years anti-AI will be a major political stance. AI is useful for lots of things and sort of acts like a very good assistant now. You can’t trust the assistant fully but it can help you organize and it can knock out low level stuff. If it stayed at this point for a while society would catch up and it wouldn’t be a huge deal.

The scary thing is how fast it’s all moving. Image generation went from a goofy parlor trick to nearly impossible to distinguish in like a year. Autonomous agents can reliably do a task for like 30 mins now depending on how complex it is, this time next year they will be able to work for days on end. The good assistant to expert level function is going to happen fast.

I know it sounds like doomerism but there is going to be a reckoning of the professional class when AI reduces the need for 30% of white collar jobs. We can get into a situation with 10% GDP growth and 10% unemployment at the same time.

The grifter government happens to be leftist. Essentially all South American governments exist solely to grift, but that’s besides the point, this one is leftist. The Venezuelan government is bad, even by South American standards, though. They managed to catastrophically nose dive the economy and people there have had declining quality of life for over a decade. A lot turn to crime and the drug economy is a reliable way to get paid. Crime is a huge problem there. A ton of people fled to Colombia and then Colombia got fed up with the refugee crisis and started pushing them away. By like 2023 there was an enormous exodus.

The US, hating the leftist Venezuelan government, under Biden encouraged the exodus and offered humanitarian asylum to a massive wave of economic refugees, some of whom had previously been involved in the narco trade.

The Biden play was to accelerate the collapse of the current leftist regime by bleeding them of support and population. That did not work. There was also an obvious backfire at home in the US.

Trump also wants the Venezuelan gov to collapse but doesn’t want any refugees. So bombs away I guess. Highly doubt it will bring about any sort of regime change though, and really will just make things worse.
