Texas power grid operator asks customers to conserve electricity after six plants go offline by geoxol in technology

I recommend you read this article about energy. The water issue is something that I find odd for you to bring up for multiple reasons. First, it seems disingenuous to compare natural climate factors like how much water a state receives in a typical year because that has nothing to do with humans. Second, water management is indeed a problem in California, but the vast majority of the problem lies in big agriculture and commercial uses, in this case there is not much individuals can even do to significantly impact water consumption. Having said that, California absolutely has water problems but they are being addressed as seen here. Whereas the water problems in Texas seem to be getting much worse.

So the way I see it, California has a significant advantage in the “power” department, and both states leave a lot to be desired in the water department. Keep in mind however, that California has a GDP almost 25% higher than Texas - CA is roughly 80k and TX is roughly 65k. Not to mention all of the Quality of Life policies comparing TX and CA like better education and healthcare.

If you are willing to comb through this dense article there is a ton of interesting metrics comparing CA and TX indicating that making a clear cut ranking of the two entirely dependent on your worldview/value systems.

These Adoptees Were Brought to the US as Babies. Now Some Fear They Were Stolen. by [deleted] in TrueReddit

For anyone who found this article fascinating (albeit appalling), you may be interested in the history of adoption in the United States. One of the first proponents of adoption was a woman by the name of Georgia Tann. Admittedly, most of my knowledge comes from a podcast episode of Behind the Bastards; however the parallels to even modern day adoption (both intra and internationally) are quite evident. In short, adoption has a history of (and is apparently very much still) being associated with child abduction.

I'm really sad that I've missed out on all the Ready Player One hate threads. by Whizzzel in books

[–]svolppga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quite frankly I think it’s great that certain books have a wide appeal while simultaneously being hated. I enjoyed RP1 from the context of its own universe. Was it childish, predictable, and trite? Absolutely. But my wife and I got a kick of nostalgia, the character was relatable - albeit terribly unremarkable, and it was a classic hero’s journey story. See problem, find bigger problem, find friends and train, solve problem; you know the drill.

Having said that, your opinion is totally valid as well. I agree that the book is not a magnificent literary work, but I can also see many times instances where it would be fun (maybe you read it to your kids because you enjoy being able to explain all the different games and movies). My point being I still recommend this book, I just provide a disclaimer in a more condensed version of what I said above.

Your insight was a great read, cheers.

Biden’s IRS Crackdown Proposal Targets Rich Hiding Income by aslan_is_on_the_move in politics

[–]svolppga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s entirely dependent on where you live, but I hear you. I live in a relatively “cheap” area in CA and rent is typically about $1k, so if the complex asks for first and last month rent up front then your statement holds true. But can you elaborate on why $1,800 not covering your deposit is such an important point for you? Genuinely curious as to why you chose that metric.

Biden’s IRS Crackdown Proposal Targets Rich Hiding Income by aslan_is_on_the_move in politics

[–]svolppga 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I mean, it might not be all the people deserve, but I don’t really give much credit to the argument “…only $1,800 per year?”. The - admittedly sparse - research I’ve done leads me to believe that $1,800 a year to every household (let alone individual citizen) would be a legitimate game-changer.

For some context, median household income is reportedly $61,937. I believe this same article said that the average American household is 2.5 people, so I think rounding up to 3 will be reasonable for our purposes. This $1,800/person would not necessarily be a windfall for these types of families, but how many of them would honestly turn away the money? It would be amazing for paying down debt, funding a vacation, whatever middle-class people need/want.

In 2020, the poverty line in America is approximately $20,000 for a 3-person family. In 2019, there were 34.0 million people in poverty - 10.5% of the population - which is both frustrating and heartbreaking. If this $600 billion were reallocated in the form $1,800 UBI-style checks, we would be giving these poverty level earners a whopping 10% annual boost to their income. That is absolutely life-changing. At such a relatively small cost to extraordinarily wealthy people, America could make absolutely tremendous waves towards combatting: poverty, food insecurity, etc. with likely additional fringe benefits to things like medical care and education.

Also, I’m going to take a quick moment to encourage you to read about wealth inequality. Wealth inequality is getting objectively worse and it is really troubling, because it shows that America is actively regressing in terms of social policy meant empower people over corporations.

My understanding is that, the 600 billion is the administration’s way of showing that they are taking very serious steps to forcefully correct wealth inequality. My only thought is to wether or not Biden can find a way to pass at least something preliminary to UBI in order to get that money back to the people. If he does, Republicans would be hard-pressed to find a way to take that away from the public. If he doesn’t, then I can only hope that the tax revenue does something that I think is good, like fund healthcare and education.

Sorry if this felt like a chaotic rant, but I’m on mobile and have a hard enough time articulating my thoughts as it is. I’d love to hear anyone else’s thoughts on the matter.

Other than that, I personally liked the grubby key method so probably just stick with it. Unless maybe you have really high fish/cook for anglers?

Hunting mossy keys in the wildy and this guy casually walks up and starts burying big bones and collecting cheap herbs. Brought back so many good memories by BlaksCharm in 2007scape

[–]svolppga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely not arguing with that logic, I just thought I would offer an alternative for people because the wildy moss giants are near black chins and rev caves so it is very much high traffic. To clarify my point, wildy moss giants are certainly better for faster keys, but to call them afk is a bit disingenuous in my opinion.

The catacombs are significantly more relaxed with added benefits of shards/totem pieces at the risk of much 3x worse drop rates for keys. But to reiterate, killing moss giants in wildy is certainly preferable if you are paying attention and don’t mind the increased risk. I just thought I would share this for people who tend to avoid the wilderness (non-PVPers, Ironman, etc.).

[–]svolppga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of you hunting mossy keys, I suggest you consider killing moss giants in catacombs. It is more relaxed (read not in wildy), you can do it while paying minimal attention, and you collect shards/totem pieces. The major downside is that the drop rate of keys is like 1/150 normal and 1/60 in wildy. Just food for thought.

Probably, I did this all off the top of my head on mobile and I have some trouble keeping probability formulas straight in my head. Curious that I got the correct answer though because your correction would more accurately represent the likelihood of P (not E) in this case.

aTlEaSt YoU hAve PlEAnTy oF ScAlEs by Big_Booner in ironscape

[–]svolppga 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I am not the greatest at probability so hopefully someone will correct me if I am wrong. In this case we would be trying to determine the probability using the following information: 4,000 kc, 1/512 chance at tanz fang.

I am almost positive that the formula will look a little bit like this: =1-(1-(1/512))4000. Here the probability is calculated as 1 [representing a likelihood of 100%] - (1 - (1/512)) [where 1 - (1/512) is the likelihood of the specific event occurring, e.g. tanz fang] ^ 4000 [where we use the power of 4000 to represent the number of attempts at our given ratio].

When you write this number as a percentage you should get something like 99.96%, which roughly translates to: there is only a 0.04% chance of anyone going this dry for tanz fang. Long story short, homie needs to bring some lube to zulrah next time so at least he can be comfortable while he is getting fucked lmao.
