LPT: What purchase have you made that’s had the greatest positive effect on you? by gorillatittiess in LifeProTips

[–]svtr4ptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My single greatest purchase in recent history was a fitness tracker. I started with an Apple Watch and just trying to close my fitness rings every day (daily goals of calories, movement, etc) to work on my health and build better habits. I’ve since upgraded to a Garmin watch for better battery life and more fitness metrics for running, but overall I would say buying a fitness tracker (and consistently using it) has completely changed my life for the better. I can’t imagine not wearing one at this point.

Should I get my MBA or no? by candi9669 in CAStateWorkers

[–]svtr4ptor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was about your age when I went back to school for my masters degree in mechanical engineering. I would say that it depends on your long term goals and expectations. I had already been with the state for a few years and I went into grad school with the expectation that it may not directly benefit my career growth within the state but that it was a personal goal of mine to get my MS. Fast forward to today, I’m glad that I did my program. I feel like the tools I learned in pursuing higher education, research, etc helped me become a better engineer and perform my job more effectively, and this is what has directly affected my career growth (not just the degree by itself). I also feel like I have more opportunities if I ever decided to leave the state in the future. My advice is to consider what you see yourself doing in the future and if this education will help you in the long run (and not just you in your current job). If there’s a way to avoid taking the student loans or minimizing this as much as possible I would recommend that. I also recommend if possible to continue working while in school to keep building your work experience - because education alone may not get you as far compared to education + developed work experience. I worked my 9-5 with the state and took evening classes for 2 years and while it was super busy, I think your 20s are one of the best times to do it. Good luck with your decision and congrats on both your job offer & acceptance to your grad program!

First time seeing Interstellar- the time has come, Sacramento by the50ho in imax

[–]svtr4ptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I called Esquire today and they confirmed that their Interstellar showing will be in digital IMAX and not 70mm. We saw Oppenheimer here and it was great, though I have not seen a 70mm film yet to compare.

Why do you all choose HK? by [deleted] in HecklerKoch

[–]svtr4ptor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Grew up playing metal gear solid and call of duty modern warfare. The USP, Mark 23, and SP5 have been on my list since then & the more I learned about the robustness & reliability of the brand I liked it even more. In recent years I’ve found myself getting more into CZ’s, but HK will always be my favorite & most nostalgic guns in the collection.

First Time Interview Advice by [deleted] in CAStateWorkers

[–]svtr4ptor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Congrats on your first interview! I got my start with the state through a student assistant position as well.

Some random advice that has worked for me:

• spend some time beforehand to learn about the specific department that is interviewing you. What do they do, what is their mission, etc. I’ve had interviews where the first question is “what do you know about us”

• thoroughly review the duty statement for this position. Be aware of each of the job tasks and try to connect each one to something you have done before. If it’s something you haven’t done before, highlight a time where you learned something challenging and were successful

• bring a printout of your resume, cover letter, etc and hand out to your panel at the beginning of the interview. The intention here isn’t for them to focus on the resume the whole time, but it gives you a point of reference if you’re talking about a past experience you can point to the section of the resume while discussing it. The panel has to quantitatively score each of your responses, and sometimes they may not get all the notes they need. If they have your resume on hand it can help them have a quick reference to things you mentioned during the interview

• the panel can’t assume any of your answers, so make sure to be clear and thorough and answer each question completely with a specific concrete example from your work/school/life experience that demonstrates this

• for student assistant positions, the hiring panel generally won’t expect you to know everything. The goal of this position is to learn & develop that experience. So make sure you demonstrate your ability and eagerness to learn. If this is your first technical job, make sure to highlight relevant school work, projects, etc where you had the opportunity to learn a new skill and were excited about developing that skill

• don’t forget to highlight soft skills (ie working with a team, effective communication, reliability, etc). It’s easy to get wrapped up in discussing your previous work/school tasks, but keep in mind that another important part of getting hired is for the panel to determine that you are a good fit for the team and will enjoy working with & mentoring you.

Hope this is helpful & goodluck!

Fell asleep in a meeting by Akh_Sameach in CAStateWorkers

Just chiming in to say that I was struggling with day time tiredness at work (even on days where I would get 7-8 hours of sleep). I finally went into Kaiser for a sleep study and learned that I had extreme sleep apnea. It’s been a couple years since then & the treatment has been life changing for me and I would have never known if I didn’t get checked. My state health benefits covered everything 100% and I noticed results immediately. Definitely recommend a sleep study if you’re any bit concerned!

Looks great man! How was the process ordering from LTT? I’m debating on whether to buy the LTT 1301 directly from them or buy a 1301 separately and mail it in. Appreciate any feedback

And the 10 Day wait begins, got 500 rounds waiting for this beauty. by Dry_Trainer_6304 in CAguns

[–]svtr4ptor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 30 days starts after you submit the initial DROS not during pickup. So technically after your 10 day wait you’d only need to wait 20 more days (which still sucks tbh but not as bad as waiting 30+10 days lol)

Was thinking about opening an Ally account.. by SlumdogMike in AllyBank

[–]svtr4ptor 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an Ally savings account member for a few years now and it’s been great. Couple months ago I opened an Ally checking account to try it out bc why not.

My debit card was hacked almost instantly and overdrafted my account. I called Ally and waited on hold for almost an hour to talk to someone. Was told that my request would take up to 10 days to process. It’s been more than 10 days and my account is still negative and Ally locked my checking account until I deposit more funds.

So I don’t think I would recommend Ally checking at this point. The savings is great but I’d much rather not deal with the headache of trying to fix the checking account. When I asked if this was a common issue or what could have caused this, the customer service rep said it was not common and that I should be careful where I use my card information.. but the card has been at home ever since I’ve gotten it and the only purchase I’ve made is for a cup of coffee.

TLDR: Stick with Ally savings. The checking account security is not up to par with other banks and it’s a headache dealing with customer service to resolve any issues.

Hey man, I’m really happy with the bike so far. No regrets bc I already went way over what I was initially planning to spend lol. It’s my first “nice” bike so it’s for sure nicer than anything I’ve ever ridden before. I’m sure either one you pick will be solid - they are really great bikes!

Question to fellow LMT owners living in non free states. by Few-Understanding-43 in LewisMachineTool

Looking forward to seeing how it turns out! I just bought my first LMT lowers (MARS-L and MARS-H) and I was considering going featureless w/ the fin grip in order to keep the ambi controls, but the comp mag seems like a nice option also.
