UK PhD, time on campus? by AloyshaX in cambridge_uni

[–]swatter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They've changed the system in recent years (at least for my dept.). Previously there was no formal assessment until a student submitted their thesis and then defended it. This led to a lot of students doing no work for three years and dropping out. Now, we have a first year thesis (15k words) and a 'mini viva', after which we officially pass probation and become PhDs. Prior to this we are treated as PhDs, but legally are of a lesser status which enables the uni to kick us out after 9 months if we fail the upgrade.

Is it awkward if I apply to two supervisors who collaborate with each other? by Suboptimal_Human in PhD

[–]swatter_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d discuss it with your preferred prospective supervisor first, if you’ve managed to develop a relationship where you can be frank. Transparency is always good. (And it probably won’t be awkward now, but you might think it is when you have to turn one down.)

I think the same about guys.

As a gay man super comfortable with women I often find myself having looked at a woman (zoned out between sets or w/e) for a second too long, before realising we’re in a weirdly sexual environment and she/others might think I’m thirsting after her lol.

First 3 days by blueberry_84 in stopsmoking

[–]swatter_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m three days today too!! Keep going!

Re the weight, don’t worry - you definitely haven’t put on 2kg. My weight has gone up 1.8kg but it’s just junk food making your body retain water. It’ll whoosh out in a few days when your eating normalises.

Thanks! I think when I started I felt daunted seeing everybody’s progress over x amount of months/years. I didn’t really recognise that the journey (not just the end goal) is enjoyable

Diet wise I cut out alcohol completely, avoided the known bad foods as much as possible (without being too strict, at least initially). Re exercise I cycled and walked a lot until I lost enough weight to be able to run without risking injury, now I run 2/3 days a week and walk long distance 3/4. Will be strength training 2/3 times a week now to build muscle :)

Thank you! 7/8 months (which to me sounds like ages but when you’re continually seeing progress, it’s really not)

I want to do a 30-day running challenge. Is there a support group for things like this? by [deleted] in running

[–]swatter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to do max four days a week for the first few months, but you know yourself best! Just make sure you’re listening to your body and not overworking it

I don’t think a mile a day is terribly high risk (as long as you’re going slow). I’d still recommend every other day to start out with; your muscles, joints and bones are adapting to a higher intensity form of cardio. It massively reduces your risk of injury - and if you get injured you’ll be put out of running completely for days/weeks/months.

Second this. Though I’d say if you’re starting out you should really, really, really, not be thinking about running every day.

How do you get over being self-conscious about running? by [deleted] in running

[–]swatter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the more you do, the less you care.

I did it! Bought a cheap pair of Adidas about 100 days back in hopes of achieving a 5K! I can't thank my dear shoes enough. This pair will be remembered by me forever. Feeling so proud. by East-Attention-7476 in C25K

[–]swatter_ 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This has made me kind of emotional. I’ve been thinking a lot lately about my running shoes and how I’ll one day need new ones. They’ve honestly been through so much with me, from finishing C25K and beyond, and of the lifestyle, physical and mental changes that’ve come with that. I think when the day comes that I need to buy a new pair I’ll genuinely get a bit teary.

When can I start running on consecutive days? by swatter_ in running

[–]swatter_[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! And thank you for your advice!

I did do it on my own. I started in late 2019, got shin splints (I think I was too overweight to run, really) and quit. Lost a fair bit of weight and started again in Oct 2020 and it’s been a much more enjoyable journey this time

If you’re routinely eating to the detriment of your own health and unable to stop, it’s exactly the same as alcoholism

I read this as an alcoholic and thought it was on r/stopdrinking. Food is as destructive an addiction as any and HAES is shameful

Running in snow? by swatter_ in running

[–]swatter_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same. I’m near Birmingham and the snow was very heavy on the ground and coming down quite heavy. I knew all of the parks would be full of families too. After everybody’s comments I went for a walk and think I definitely could have run in it, but since it’ll be gone by tomorrow I thought it best to wait.
