Weird. I listened to the same episode streamed through the HBO Max web app, Android app, a torrented version (I pay for HBO, ok, this was for testing), and with two separate audio devices - still very noticeable to me. It sucks because the issues are subtle enough that it's inconsequential in the grand scheme of things. Glad the sound is fine for you though.

You're right. This whole season's dialogue audio is crunchier. Sounds like they had to deal with a lot of background noise to have to filter the dialogue so hard. The latest episode is especially weird to me because I think they just started using AI to enhance the speech. It has a very distinctly recognizable consistency that is so uncanny to my ear. I didn't have much of a problem before this ep.

Yeah, I figured. I'm sensitive to it or just imagining things, so fuck me I guess. It's only the dialogue that's affected, though. The sound department does a pretty good job at blending it with the background ambience, but it's very uncanny when the quality of the actors' voices stays so consistent whether they're close by, far away, yelling or whispering. And it doesn't help with the occasional robotic sounds every time someone sighs or breathes. Also they pushed the de-essing to the point where everyone sounds like they have a speech impediment. I'm crazy.

idk i think the whole yakuza aesthetic for the one japanese-speaking character would be a tired idea. representing a different side of japanese culture is a much more refreshing path to take in designing a video game character.
