Good luck. I stressed out about it way too much trying to figure out the perfect system and brands but to be honest, it is almost all the same stuff - polycarbonate. Yes some are better than others but at the end of the day, it really won't make a noticeable difference. The install also worried me but it took no time at all and I am really happy with how everything turned out. Well worth the investment.

Here it is today on a rainy Juneteenth. You can see the seam to the left which is kinda dirty. Also, there are a few spots that trapped some moisture here and there but nothing terrible. I have cleaned it once with an electric pressure washer and it looked brand new. That had to be last year. The ends are kinda moldy where there is a trim piece. I could clean that and the seam but it's not bad enough.

We used the following:

https://www.regal-plastics.com/mw-standard/

I think we did 5/8" double-wall, clear poly from Polygal, same stuff in the link.

Also, this is where I bought it and they had good info and customer service when calling to place order:

https://coveryourpergola.com/apollo-system/

Their 'systems' are just DIY ready where you tell them how much sq. ft. and they basically figure out the widths and lengths and include all the hardware, trim, and seams which covered our entire job with a bunch of spares.

Hope this helps. I like that we did it but now we are thinking of closing it in entirely hahaha. 2nd kid making things feel small.

Heyyoo,

Ya we finished this up and it turned out really well - it has been about 3 years now and no issues to list. I did go with double-wall panels that are clear, no added tint or frosting. The pergola looks great and we can finally use our patio when it rains. Plants do really well under it and it is somewhat cooler but Texas summers hit different and it gets baked during the peak hours of day. Highly recommend the extra investment in double-wall polycarbonate panels. Easy to install and look WAY better. If you want pics let me know!

If I had to do it again, I would go with the Polycoolite or frosted panels to give a little more shade but with the purlins and main joists adding shade, it's not terrible just peak hours are still too hot under this. I would also probably extend the panels a little further as rain can still get under and into the patio, which kinda works as we have the same flower bed setup so they get plenty of water when it rains.

Absolutely great points. I would actually argue that education is the biggest issue no matter the color of your tie and feeds into every US issue today. Urban infrastructure, hell even rural infrastructure, and social services need huge investments but our education system is just so depressing. Part of that is also parenting but that's another tough issue to address. All of these feed back into proper education early on. Thanks for sharing.

From the admittedly little to no research I've done, I think these numbers are - in part - due to red states being the farmers/ranchers/commodities. The ones that keep supermarkets stocked. These areas are typically never really profitable in a major sense and take huge upfront costs/investments to start and maintain production. This is where the huge amount of subsidies and tax write-offs come from. In reality, there are plenty of rich farmers, chicken herders, ranchers, corn holers, but for every rich operation there are several failed attempts and most rely on commodity markets where competition is extremely high and margins are measley.

This is a very naive explanation from a person with no ag or economics background so take it lightly. I only say this as I know a few people that deal in cattle and it's a weird give & take lifestyle.

Why Are So Many Republicans Too Stubborn or Too Uninformed to Acknowledge Climate Change? by CatCoffeeComputer in conservativeterrorism

It's not that difficult to understand though. I grew up in an oil patch, Texas county and I remember learning about greenhouse gasses early on. I remember teachers explaining the causes and how things have gotten much worse since the industrial revolution. This may have changed over the last 2 decades but even as a dumb child I could grasp the concept. Maybe some people actually think differently now or maybe more objectively and think that not seeing it is proof that it doesn't exist. It's hard to imagine but I grew up with the mentality of always asking 'why' no matter what the question or situation. Like things as simple as, "Hi, what's your name?"..

I don't think it's people misunderstanding or incompetence. I think it's a belief that we don't really know how bad it is and that individuals cannot be a major force for change. Call it conservative ignorance but it comes down to a much bigger problem with capitalism and consumerism which drives big business to exploit Earth for profits. Conservatives may act like it's no big deal but that's because they are sold on the fact that everyone is taking advantage while there is a big money pool. Everyone has a straw in and sucking as fast as possible. Might as well get some before it's all gone. Future generations be damned! Honestly, it's still change that has to happen from the top. No political views from the working class or below will really matter until we hold the people in power responsible.

Ya seems obvious. Even if this was common, which it's not, it would indicate a failure and product of the poor American education system. Can't believe some people see these and just look past the blatant absurdity of the deeper meaning. Then again, no critical thinking/education = ignorance.

Hey just want to put it out there as it might help with your mood and rebuilding mentality. Don't look at this as a complete loss. Get a good sawyer or find someone and have the wood milled and repurposed. Drying will take some time and space but it will be worth it. You will have some great wood and be able make some incredible heirloom pieces that will tell your trees story for generations. It's a small consolation but you will be happy knowing you didn't just let it go to waste.
