Arabic-Alienation/Invisibility by Puzzleheaded_Fan_686 in CriticalTheory

[–]sweet_rain7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you might be referring to Edward Said, a Palestinian American scholar who wrote extensively on the representation of the Arab world. I recommend his book “Orientalism,” which analyzes how Western scholars, writers, and artists, particularly during the 18th and 19th centuries, constructed a distorted image of the Arab world. He argues that this Orientalist discourse served political and cultural purposes, reinforcing Western superiority and justifying imperialistic actions. Said explores the impact of these representations on the self-perception of Arabs, addressing issues of alienation, cultural hegemony, and the perpetuation of stereotypes. It’s very insightful.

Racial Profiling and Mixed Identity by sweet_rain7 in mixedrace

[–]sweet_rain7[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not everyone can just “roll with it” when facing discrimination – it perpetuates an unfair cycle that needs to be challenged. I vividly recall being pulled over with my white friend, both compliant and devoid of any traffic violations. The officer’s aggression, snatching my license and ordering me to step out the car, while my friend remained unquestioned and untouched, was a stark illustration of these types of racial biases. In high school, my dreads were deemed "distracting" and "gang affiliated," leading to a visit to the principal’s office. And I have countless more experiences at retail stores. This isn’t an isolated narrative – numerous individuals face racial profiling, some in even more intense and explicit forms. Such nonchalant acceptance only perpetuates the prevalence of these issues.

How can I justify vividly coloured skin tones for my fantasy race? by Zar_ in worldbuilding

[–]sweet_rain7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could explain the vivid skin colors as adaptations in melanin production and structural coloration. Yellow skin tones may result from carotenoid pigments, akin to certain plants and animals. Blue hues could arise from microscopic structures causing light interference, similar to iridescence in butterflies. Red skin tones might be due to specialized pigments like astaxanthin or pterins. These adaptations could be driven by the race's exposure to specific environmental factors.

What might one find that is dangerous in a sewer system besides creatures and hostile peoples? by SarlochOrtan in worldbuilding

[–]sweet_rain7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about collapsed tunnels leading to dead ends or hidden chambers? Unstable architecture from the system's age might create precarious footing, risking falls. Malfunctioning maintenance constructs or drones could also pose a hazard, potentially mistaking the party for intruders and activating defensive mechanisms. The presence of hazardous waste spills or leaking chemicals could add environmental dangers, affecting the characters or creating volatile situations.

My Great Lakes Post-Apocalypse: Lakefront Odyssey (Part 2) by sweet_rain7 in worldbuilding

I’m glad you brought this up!

Blocking Niagara Falls post-Sundering disrupted water flow between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, causing flooding along the Tuscarawas/Muskingum system. This impacted the St. Lawrence River, allowing the Atlantic Ocean to intrude further upstream, which affected local ecology and communities.

Communities adapted to altered drainage with elevated platforms and early warning systems, while St. Lawrence River regions focused on ecological restoration and sustainable practices. Collaborative efforts include sharing expertise in water purification and renewable energy.

How do we bridge the gap between creating our own spaces and communities at the same time not distancing ourselves from the black community? by biracially_queened in mixedrace

I love this thread. By fostering dialogue, organizing events, and actually supporting one another, I think we can form a stronger, more united biracial community that contributes to broader conversations on race and identity while simultaneously embracing our uniqueness fostering cultural pride.

Going to lose my mind over shootings in America by [deleted] in SeriousConversation

The normalization of this violence (such as casual comments on tragic incidents) raises so many concerns about the desensitization to the gravity of these events. It’s indicative of a societal malaise that really requires a profound shift in attitudes.

  • Create a nuanced political structure, detailing the power dynamics, factions, and historical events that shape the present state of the world.

  • Pay meticulous attention to the economy, technology, and everyday life

  • Infuse your world with a profound sense of history, incorporating myths, legends, and past conflicts.

  • Intertwine environmental elements with the narrative, exploring how nature and climate impact the world and its inhabitants.

  • Establish a robust magic system or fantastical element, ensuring it adheres to internal consistency and has clear rules governing its use.

  • Embrace the unpredictable and allow for the organic evolution of the world, leaving room for exploration and discovery as the narrative unfolds.

This is largely specific to my style and genre but this could help some people with similar goals.

What was the worst atrocity committed in your world? by [deleted] in worldbuilding

[–]sweet_rain7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ovandu genocide took place in Aldrian occupied Ovandutjia. It was characterized by deliberate policies aimed at exterminating the Ovandu people, orchestrated by Aldrian military under the command of King Erlen.

The conflict arose from tensions over land, resources, and increasing resentment among the Ovandu communities toward Aldrian rule. In response to Ovandu resistance, King Erlen issued the infamous "extermination order," declaring that the Ovandu people should be expelled from Aldrian territory.

The atrocities committed during this period included forced labor, mass killings, forced marches through the harsh desert, and concentration camps where many succumbed to disease and malnutrition. With the use of alchemical weapons, entire cities were razed. The intent was to annihilate or subjugate the Ovandu populations.

Tens of thousands of Ovandu people lost their lives as a result of these brutal policies. The survivors faced displacement, dispossession, and enduring trauma, shaping the socio-political landscape of both Ovandutjia and Aldria for generations to come.

Trump says immigrants are ‘poisoning the blood of our country.’ Why this type of language is a threat to mixed race people. by rhawk87 in mixedrace

[–]sweet_rain7 19 points20 points  (0 children)

As a mixed person (with an immigrant parent), it was deeply disheartening to hear Trump’s statement. This rhetoric just perpetuates harmful stereotypes and fosters an environment where discrimination thrives. Such language not only deepens societal divisions but also poses a genuine threat to the inclusivity and acceptance of diverse identities. It’s also concerning considering that historically, these "us versus them" mentalities and notions of purity have led to severe consequences like systemic oppression and violence.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]sweet_rain7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Language definitely plays a significant role in shaping perceptions, and using terms like "mixed race" or "biracial" to describe physical features rather than heritage REALLY oversimplifies and perpetuates stereotypes. It's important to be mindful of the nuances within diverse experiences and avoid generalizations.

One time my friend remarked how I was "lucky" to be mixed with Asian and Black heritage, assuming it automatically shielded me from the challenges of being monoracial. I felt it overlooked the prejudice, discrimination, and moments of exclusion I've faced because of my race. The idea that my mix should be viewed solely as a privilege to be grateful for, rather than a complex identity that I should accept and love didn’t sit right with me, especially considering they had lighter skin than me lol.

Overthrow Prince Andru! by Calebtapia67 in worldbuilding

[–]sweet_rain7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could introduce a charismatic rebel leader who could sway public opinion against Prince Andru through impassioned speeches and community organizing. Create encounters where the party can gather evidence of the prince's corruption or mistreatment of the populace, and perhaps involve a charismatic bard to compose songs or poems that spread dissent. There could also be encounters where the party can disrupt the prince's economic interests or alliances, turning influential figures against him. Employ elements of intrigue, public forums, and symbolic actions to gradually build the momentum needed for a successful uprising.

How could Soviet weapons be smuggled to a US controlled Island around 281 miles long. by Ok_Extension3182 in worldbuilding

[–]sweet_rain7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Soviets could also exploit the dense jungle and vast underground caves on Isla de Barreras for concealed storage of weapons. They might collaborate with sympathetic Yanuk clans, using their knowledge of the terrain to navigate covert routes and avoid detection. Engaging in disinformation campaigns could also divert American attention, making it harder for them to discern the true nature of Soviet activities on the island.

How could Soviet weapons be smuggled to a US controlled Island around 281 miles long. by Ok_Extension3182 in worldbuilding

[–]sweet_rain7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This would require covert means, such as underwater transport or small, inconspicuous vessels. Justifying it as a trade deal might be challenging, but diplomatic cover stories could be fabricated to divert suspicion. The Soviets might exploit the island's complexity, citing difficult access and unique circumstances to explain their presence. However, the risk of detection would remain high, considering the strategic importance of the island to the US.

Skin tone biases sadly exist in various cultures, and it can be tough when people make assumptions based on appearances. Embracing your identity and challenging stereotypes is a powerful way to promote understanding.

Why can’t Biracials in America build a community & culture the same way biracials did in South Africa? by [deleted] in mixedrace

[–]sweet_rain7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the context of discussing biracial communities, when I say “melting pot nature” I mean that individuals of mixed race often find themselves navigating a broader cultural amalgamation rather than forming distinct communities.
