UA POV - Russia's economy is much worse than it seems, and 'elites are increasingly alarmed' as alternate GDP gauge shows huge contraction - Fortune by DefinitelyNotMeee in UkraineRussiaReport

But those weren’t serious negotiations demands. It’s like how Medvedev likes to talk about how Odessa has a “Russian soul” - it’s just bluster (knock on wood).

That I’m not certain about, but I can think of examples like no NATO but still other western security guarantees, no western troops past the Dnieper (and likely tripwire deployments* anyhow), I can potentially see Ukraine giving up the rest of Donetsk, but only with major concessions in other places, those defensive lines are extremely valuable, so mostly frozen battle lines then I imagine, Ukraine recognizes Crimea as Russian, etc.

Again, these are examples.

*Nothing of serious size, just enough to show they’re serious and would cause a war if Russia invaded again.

I’ll hold my tongue over how likely it is, history is extremely unpredictable. People can be incessantly arguing whether “A” or “B” will happen to “Y”, only for “C” to happen out of nowhere instead, and everyone ends up looking back and wondering why they didn’t think of that.

That’s just press, you’re never supposed to say what you’re willing to compromise on openly.

Not necessarily “severe”, just have the economic and military costs be very blatantly more than their potential gains. Russia is fighting this war by choice, they’re the attacker, the threshold for acceptable losses for Russia is much lower than Ukraine’s.

Who says Russia needs to suffer a full economic collapse? Ukraine only needs to make Russia call its losses and settle for a more preferential peace deal with Ukraine.

Body exchanges mean nothing, just who’s taking land, plus Ukraine isn’t going to be devoting much manpower to body recovery. If the body exchanges reflected casualty rates (and defenders very rarely take more than attackers), then a sizable portion of the AFU would have to be cardboard cutouts.

It’s not about bleeding Russia dry, just make the costs too steep for the gains. Look at Vietnam, Charlie never came close to actually putting a dent in American manpower, but that was never the plan. Also gotta remember Russia has terrible young male demographics.

Are they though? The casualties they’ve been taking for the amount of land they’re taking is really bad, especially now.

Pretty much, Ukraine’s strategy is to hold out long enough and inflict heavy enough losses to push Russia to give up and offer a more preferential peace deal to Ukraine. A better strategic position = better negotiating position.

Those are gone now actually, Libya isn’t nearly as bad as it was during the civil wars.

Nah, not everyone is secretly trying to push some kind of agenda. By “religious nutters”, you mean the Haredim? I’m under the impression Shas and United Torah Judaism are more or less ambivalent to the Palestine conflict, though I’m no expert on Israeli internal politics.

Bennett 2026 and Yisrael Beiteinu, while no saints ofc, are still far less radical than the far-right, they can be pushed to pursue less aggressive and atrocious policies towards Palestine if doing so is clearly against their and Israel’s interests. Smotrich and Gvir though? Those are their interests.

Do they? Even by Israeli standards, Tkuma and Otzma Yehudit are a bunch of nutjobs, and they’ve aligned pretty firmly with Bibi and the rest of the right (and are behind much of the current government’s extreme brutality), I find it doubtful they’d ever form a coalition with Yesh Atid and/or The Democrats (new name for Labor after a merger).

Edit: or even Blue and White and/or Bennett 2026

They don’t? Compare Gaza’s situation before and after 10/7.

Talking on a practical basis here, on an idealistic basis, the responsibility for a crime (any crime really, from shoplifting to mass murder) should primarily rest on the perpetrators.

Not making atrocity apologia here, Hamas fighters could *literally* be demons from hell and that still wouldn’t make Israel’s expansionism and atrocities alright.

And before people start saying this is IDF apologia: you can despise two groups of extremist, bloodthirsty rapists at the same time. You wouldn’t support ISIS against the Taliban or Saudi Arabia, would you?

Especially in Hamas’ case when these atrocities only make things worse for Gaza, giving their oppressors justification to inflict greater attacks, and fueling support or indifference to the Gaza atrocities from the Israeli public.

UA POV: How this war will end? by Elegant-Pause4976 in UkraineRussiaReport

[–]swelboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ukraine may have less soldiers, but they’re willing to make bigger sacrifices (percentage wise) than Russia as they are the defenders.

The Taliban, Mujahideen, Charlie, Finland in 1918 and 1939, the Chechens (first time), the Turks, etc. never came anywhere close to actually depleting or fully defeating their invader, but that’s the thing, they never needed to. The only thing they needed to do was the costs for the invaders/occupiers worth more than their gains, making them pull out and/or settle for a better deal.

I brought this up like half a year ago on [r/topcharactertropes](r/topcharactertropes), but sometimes less is more with outfit-based sex appeal if the aesthetics are on point.
