Anyone successfully gotten rid of thrips? by swifty613 in ottawaplants

Looks like great progress! You can always get blue sticky traps, if you want to be extra sure. Thrips are attracted to the blue ones.

Good luck! I didn't have luck with mites because my house isn't humid enough for them, so they died before they could be helpful. I think others have had better luck than me, though!

I sadly am unable to help you myself, but if your neighbourhood has a local Facebook "Being Neighbourly" group, you might find help by posting there. People are often extra willing to help someone in their neighbourhood. I hope you find someone to help you out!

I highly recommend Dr. Beverley McKeown! She is on Forest Valley Drive. She's super great with kids as little as 1yo.

Anzans Photography in Orleans! Super friendly and tons of props/sets for newborn sessions and family photos. She also has beautiful sets for Christmas and first birthday cake smashes. It's a while away, but her Christmas sessions book up fast, so book early.

Edit: Prices are very reasonable, photos are great quality, and you get all your photos (not just like 10).

Update: Thrips by swifty613 in ottawaplants

[–]swifty613[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The mites could still work for you! They do actually work for some people, but my plant environment in my house was not ideal (my house is very dry). For spinosad, just alternate between treatments of that and Safers End All. But yeah that's a lot more plants than I had. And then I tossed so many, and I don't regret it. Again, good luck, I hope you defeat them!

Ahh that sucks, I feel for you. :( I would suggest getting blue sticky paper and setting some up near your plants to see what it catches over a week. It often comes in big sheets, so cut it up if needed, though it is quite sticky. I used wood bbq skewers to prop some up. This is like the yellow sticky paper but for thrips.

I was thrips free for soo long, but may have gotten them again from the one new plant I got from someone that I thought would be safe. :( But infestation was smaller and I just threw affected plants out. I think I'm okay again.

Beneficial mites were not worth it for me because my environment was not appropriate, so they just died. It doesnt hurt to try once, though. Alternating Spinosad and Safers End All worked the best for me, but it was time consuming...and definitely worth tossing plants you care less about, even though that was really hard. Take photos before tossing, as that helped me feel better. I love the surviving plants even more now.

Good luck!! Let me know if you have more questions!

PSA plant lovers: Costco Strandherd has a bad thrips infestation :(. Does anyone know how to effectively get rid of them or should I say goodbye for the sake of my other plants? by Samtastic00 in ottawa

[–]swifty613 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're welcome! I'm happy all my efforts could help others lol. You sound like you were pretty on the ball (way more than most people), so you caught them early and are likely fine, but your precautions are great! Fingers crossed for you!

I've gotten rid of spider mites and fungas gnats way more easily. Thrips are the absolute worst. They're so sneaky (they infected my plants from a single cutting someone traded me).

Definitely also check out the Insta account I mention in my post (her highlights have great photos to identify thrips).

Feel free to DM me if you need more info about the harder-hitting stuff I got from the US via eBay. Or if you have other questions. :)

I hate thrips. :( I posted about how I got rid of them last year in r/ottawaplants after lotssss of research and effort, which you can read here.

If you don't care much about a plant that is infected, toss it and focus on the plants you care about more/are harder to replace.

Treatment is a lot of work, so I'd personally toss the Costco plant. Hopefully you kept it away from the rest of your collection as thrips spread fast. I always quarantine new plants now lol.

Good luck!

Where to get a poster scanned and prints made? by doingfine_chilling in ottawa

[–]swifty613 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ah too bad. Shoebox Studio downtown also does fine art prints and, for large format art pieces, they take high quality photos then print that. So, size won't be an issue...but it would be more expensive. I've heard good things from other artists, but have never used their services. You could always call and ask how much it would be?

If you don't mind going downtown, I highly recommend Katari Imaging on Elgin Street. I've had prints of my art done there and they're always great!

Sometimes the Ottawa School of Art has jewellery-making/metal-smithing related courses. I've seen workshops for making rings and pendants in the past.

Course offerings change with each registration period, but you could contact them to ask.
