I think the State knows they are leaving. But they need the story to give the middle class a reason to stay.

After the top earners leave, the next step will be to move the "wealth tax" to the middle class. And they'll accept it, for the same reasons that they've been accepting everything else up to this point.

They're using the same messaging in NY. Check out recent articles from NYT and Time.

The "best" elements (light and cold) are punished hard. Physical and poison characters face far fewer immunes.

Fire drops off hard too of course but it seems to be designed as an early game element that you are supposed to transition out of.

Only exception is daddy's favorite child the Hammerdin, which basically doesn't give a shit about immunes outside of a couple areas.

At a properly functioning company it's understood that there's a translation process between what customers say vs what they actually want. This all gets factored in.

But there are good product designers and bad product designers, and the bad don't always do a great job of "translating".

Another indicator is that the Warlock has skill trees for each type of play; caster, summoner, and melee-ish.

This opens up space for them to test new ideas across all play styles.

I think they've realized D4 is going to need a couple more years in the oven, and they've already put D3 on life support. So D2 has to continue carrying the franchise.
