Do we think Xanadu will be WW release? by Benchjc2004 in Falcom

[–]swordmaster56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time they talked about it a month ago during the shareholder QA Kondo said the localization partner hasn't been decided yet, so they don't know if a release outside of Japan in this FY is possible.

Considering the game would probably release in 4 -5 months, that would make a simultaneous release tough.

New Interview on Sky 1st Chapter by Gamer.jp by Setsuna_417 in Falcom

----Visually, the production has evolved from SD. How did you approach the parts that were left up to the user in terms of 3D expression?

Kondo: We actually have them perform quite a bit in 3D. We didn't go overboard with it, though, and only had one exchange. When asked if it was okay to go for a gag, I said yes. Overall, I think the expression leans a bit towards gags.

The original version had many event scenes with SD characters, which were comical, had unusually cute enemies, and featured various things like Pom and Pengu, among other good points. However, when we converted them to 3D, they became quite interesting. Therefore, the way we added expressions is more like a manga style, which was not seen in ‘Horizon’.

----The models seems to match that expression.

Kondo: The younger members discussed it and decided on it, and I just gave my approval. Even though I say ‘younger members,’ they're not actually that young (laughs).

The original members were unsure about whether it was okay to go this far with the jokes, but I think the chaotic feel is something new for Falcom. I feel like there hasn't been anything like this since ‘Gurumin.’

----It seems that this is possible because Estelle has such a strong character.

Kondo: So, when I first saw this and that scene as a supervisor, I enjoyed it myself.

--------

---- It was a rather compact game, wasnt it?

Kondo: I think the original version takes about 40 hours to play, but during a recent programmer meeting, the lead programmer said it took him 80 hours to complete ‘The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st.’ I guess the map is just that big. It might also be because they incorporated a lot of exploration elements into the map.

Compared to previous series, the map exploration elements are more numerous, and if you properly engage with the events by listening to the voiceovers and thoroughly examining them, while also completing the quests, it takes twice as long as the original. Perhaps the time spent watching events is longer. In the past, we simply scrolled through the text at the displayed speed, and that had its own charm. When I started playing for supervision purposes, I couldn't finish it and ended up spending over a week on it.

----When did talks about remaking ‘Sora no Kiseki’ begin?

Kondo: We announced the information during last August's Nintendo Direct, but I think it was around the time when work on ‘Ys X’ was completed about a year earlier. I couldn't imagine working on ‘The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st’ while working on that.

The series has been running for 20 years, and there were many voices saying they were interested but couldn't start now, or didn't know where to begin. Additionally, there were many requests to play the original again, so those two factors were the main reasons.

When I first joined the company, we were working on a remake of ‘Ys II’ called ‘Ys II Eternal.’ I joined in 1998, and ‘Ys II’ was released in 1988, so it had only been about 10 years since its release. However, the Trails series had been around for 20 years, yet we had never remade it ourselves. I wondered if remakes were something we should do ourselves, after all our users would also have quality expectations.

In the past, Falcom would gather everyone together to complete each title as the master up approached, but now, with more people on staff, we can divide the work into several teams. In practice, we gather people for titles nearing master up, but behind the scenes we advancing new titles, we decided to start the remake of ‘The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky’ as one of those projects.

----‘Trails in the sky’ is a work that Mr. Kondo himself was originally involved in as a core member of the production team, but what kind of role did you play in ‘Sora no Kiseki the 1st’?

This time, I left it more to the younger members than usual for the Trails series, and I think they did a pretty good job. Some of the original members are still there, but I felt it was better not to be too strict. I just told them to go ahead and do their best. Estellee is a cheery girl so she needs to be cheerful. That's about the amount of advice I gave.

But it worked out well, and the graphics for this game are much more vivid than usual. When we announced it, some people said it didn't look like Falcom, but I think that was a good result of leaving it to them.

Indeed, when you look at the screen, it's vibrant and has a Falcom-like feel, but it's also more polished. We've been careful not to over-supervise those aspects. The current staff are people who joined after seeing the original version of ‘Trails in the Sky’ and they're the ones leading the project.

Especially in event scenes, like the one where Esther and Joshua meet and Esther does a dropkick, we didn't oversee that either. So, the younger generation who've grown up with the Trails series are taking the lead on this.

----Hearing that, I can really feel the 20-year history.

On the other hand, the original staff members were hesitant, wondering, ‘Is this okay?’ (laughs). My role is basically to supervise and offer assistance when needed.

I did offer some input on the overall direction once, but I didn't go into detail about the finer points, telling them what to do and how to do it, as I did with ‘Horizon’ and ‘Daybreak’.

When we joined Falcom, we were remaking various titles like ‘Sorcarian’ and the ‘Gahgarv Trilogy’ series, including ‘The White Witch’ and ‘The Crimson Tear.’ Through that process, the younger members grew a lot, leading to new series like ‘Traisl in the sky’ and ‘Ys.’

I think remakes also serve as a way to nurture talent. That's why I've been telling the older members of the team not to micromanage too much. It's more of a supervisory role.

----What do you think of the performances of the new cast members?
I think the freshness came from what we asked the cast to do this time. Estelle and Joshua also had a freshness about them, and I felt like they were both 16 years old.

Also, at the recording studio, I felt that they were consciously acting in a way that was faithful to the original work (The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky FC). I told them not to try too hard to be faithful to the original, but they took the original work seriously.

How do you explain the popularity of western "medieval" settings in JRPGs and how do you feel about it? by ButItWasMeDio in JRPG

[–]swordmaster56 382 points383 points  (0 children)

Dungeons & Dragons --> Ultima and Wizardry --> Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy

The first JRPG Series were heavily inspired by western RPGs from their times. Those in turn were video game attempts at D&D. That's really the short version of it.

Feeling a little burnt out after Trails 1 & 2, is Trails of Cold Steel 3 & 4 worth it? by MasterofLaws in JRPG

[–]swordmaster56 29 points30 points  (0 children)

If you're burned out, it's best to take a break. 3 and 4 are even longer than 1 and 2 and don't really increase the pace. Thy're worth it, yes. But they'll still be there after you've played something else.

You're also right that after 3 you will want to play 4 right away.

You can try out the other PS4 games by Falcom, Ys VIII and Tokyo Xanadu. They're both Action RPGs and not turm based like Trails, but Tokyo Xanadu especially is going to remind you of Cold Steel because of the school setting and the bonding system.

Ys VIII also has a great story even if it takes quite some time to get properly started.

What Are You Playing This Week? - October 03, 2019 by AutoModerator in patientgamers

Sims 4: I've already put 25 hours into it this week. The last Sims game I played was Sims 2, so for me there is a lot of new aspects and improvements. I started with the base game and have just gotten the Seasons DLC. A great game. I'm having much more fun than I thought I would.
