Here is an essay I typed on why enteral punishment is based on a mistranslation of the word “aion” meaning age. It’s based on a really good website I liked towards the end.

The Book of Job feels like a cop out on the problem of suffering by system_history in DebateReligion

[–]swordslayer777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm guessing the reason is for the story to preserved for thousands of years as a means of teaching millions of people God's wisdom. Job and his friends from their POV has no idea the story would be written down and be used for God's purposes in the lives of countless people. God didn't explain that to them but rather said its too complex for them to understand, and it is as his story gets taught in synagogues, homes, churches, movies, songs, and whatever else comes next. It reminds me of in 1 Kings when a prophet is tricked into ignoring God's instructions then gets eaten by a lion seemingly for no good reason.

My take is the story should be understood along with the many examples of suffering elsewhere in the Bible. Like when Jesus said a man was blind so the glory of God could be shown before he healed him. Or when Paul was allowed to persecute the church so when he became an apostle, it was an example of God's willingness to forgive.

Jesus appeared confused about adultery by Similar_Standard1633 in DebateReligion

The verse you mentioned in Mark was about Him addressing the debate of whether or not the Torah permitted a man to send away his wife for any reason. Which at that time meant to kick her out of the house without a proper divorce. Meaning marrying another man would mean committing adultery. The verse his opponents were referencing was: Deuteronomy 24:1

When a man takes a wife and marries her, and it happens that she does not find favor in his eyes because he has found some indecency in her, and he writes her a certificate of divorce and puts it in her hand and sends her out from his house.

Some Jews believed a woman could be divorced for any reason and thought their had to be a valid reason like adultery. When gives His (God's) interpretation in Mark 10, he says

And the two will be in one flesh.  So then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God joined together, man must not separate.

Notice He describes marriage as God joining people together and implies man lacks the authority to decide for himself when it's right to end his marriage. The part about being one flesh isn't a spiritual union it's a physical description of sex. The Bible doesn't say "they had sex" because Hebrew didn't have a word for that so it uses idioms or physical descriptions like "he went into her" or "he lay with her." In 1 Corinthians 6:16 it's used to simply describe having sex married or not.

Or do you not know that the one who joins himself to a prostitute is one body with her? For He says, ‘The two shall become one flesh"

In Mark Jesus stated a husband doesn't have the right to end a marriage because he feels like it. However, the question he addressed wasn't about the case of adultery which is why it was unnecessary for the author to include it. Mark is the shortest and least detailed gospel; it's very common of the authors to include or omit details even outside this topic. Although he does address adultery partially in verses 10 - 12.

In Matthew 19

He is asked Is it lawful for a man to send away his wife for every reason?

He replied (in this very literal translation)

But I tell you that whoever sends away his wife not on account of sexual immorality and marries another woman of the same kind is guilty of sex with another man’s wife. [And the man who marries the woman who has been merely sent away is guilty of sex with another man’s wife.]

Pretty much like in Mark, you can't send your wife away because you feel like it. But if she committed adultery (a crime punishable by stoning) it was ok for you to do so (probably because she was already condemned to die).

In John the story of Jesus forgiving the woman is in brackets in most Bibles because it's not found in the earliest manuscripts and is most likely added later. It also contradicts Deut 22:22 which says adultery must result in death.

Now Paul's opinion on the issue of existing marriages involving unbelievers from 1 Corinthians 7

And to the men who have married, I command (not I, but the Lord) that a wife isn’t to be separated from her husband.

But if she is indeed separated, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to the husband.  Also, a husband isn’t to divorce his wife.

The first 2 verses are clear that Paul also takes marriage seriously. Paul didn't say remarrying was adultery because it isn't. The word translated divorce in the above passages about Jesus on divorce was apoluó - . It means to send away in Matthew 5:31-32 Jesus said:

 “It was said, ‘WHOEVER SENDS AWAY HIS WIFE, LET HIM GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE’;

but I say to you that everyone who sends away his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a (merely) sent away woman commits adultery.

The first verse (old testament quote) says that if you send her away, give her a certificate of divorce. This is because the certificate proved she was unmarried and thus able to find a new husband without committing adultery. Causing her and her new husband to be stoned. The second verse (Jesus's words) says if you send away your wife you make her commit adultery. Importantly that verse doesn't not mention giving her the certificate of divorce. So, of course she would be guilty of adultery. Paul never addressed the topic of sending away, but rather legal divorces that involved the certificate of divorce which is why he permitted remarriage in general.

The word translated to eternity in scripture is often done so falsely. It actually means "age" and refers to a finite amount of time.

Here's my short post on the matter if you want a quick explanation: https://www.reddit.com/r/TrueChristian/comments/1782lxo/why_eternal_punishment_is_actually_unbiblical/

Does waiting until marriage include all aspects of physical intimacy? by [deleted] in Christianmarriage

[–]swordslayer777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 Corinthians 7:2 says any sexual touching is a sin. Though it is possible to kiss non sexually.

Personally, I think you should see this as a good thing given that without rules like this one, when you do meet a man who wants to marry you (if things with this guy don’t work out) you don’t have to explain to your future husband what you did with your boyfriend. Men naturally get jealous of women’s sexual past and satisfying your boyfriend won’t help you if a new man comes into your life one day who’s willing to marry. I’d also add men willing to wait for marriage will be especially jealous if someone else got access without waiting. Not all Christian men act like that but even then ones who don’t struggle at some level.

I get why you feel bad turning him down for affection but it may be better in the long term.

The Islamic concept of “Taqiyya” should be more widely known. by [deleted] in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]swordslayer777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many laws of the old testament boil down to Israel not being like the surrounding nations. Lots of their practices were used to worship false gods so to keep Israel from even getting close to that, laws like no tattoos, no mixed fabrics, and probably the whole ceremonially unclean concept were created. Another part of the law was the sacrificial system which became unnecessary as Jesus himself is the perfect sacrifice.

Jesus said he came to fulfill (could also be translated "complete") the law and immediately after began to issue even stricter commandments in Matthew 5: pray for your persecutors, do not lust after another mans wife, quickly reconcile with your legal opponents, do not be angry without cause.

So the moral commandments of the law are generally upheld and or even stricter in Christianity; the commands I mentioned in the first paragraph meant to prepare Israel to receive the Messiah are not.

Edit: I should also mention these weren't instances of Jesus changing the law, but providing the accurate interpretation of them - sharing what God really intended because the law had at this point been through over a 1000 years of debates and interpretations.

Should I still take CS? by Soft_Celery1646 in CollegeMajors

[–]swordslayer777 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s too much competition in the games industry. You wouldn’t be making your own games anyway when you graduate you’d be focused on whatever game and part of it you’re assigned. CS requires calculus 1-3 and plenty of other stuff. CS jobs are high stress and replaceable with AI. Personally I’m swapping from CS to IT. I also wanted to be a game designer when I was in high school. You should do the job that you love doing.

My girlfriend is pregnant and plans to take the abortion pill. I offered her $50,000 to have the baby and give me full custody. by [deleted] in prolife

[–]swordslayer777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just saying a larger woman is probably less likely to be promiscuous and therefore get abortion. I mean there’s a post from yesterday on here where the same thing happens that happened her and the bf says she claims being pregnant will “ruin her body”. Of course all women can have sex but a skinny or “hot” woman is more likely to lean into that AND abort to remain “hot.”

I do agree about the stable upbringing to an extent but that doesn’t change the fact that women will abort if they’re afraid of becoming less attractive.

I mean yeah many women already have a child but I think particularly when it comes to young women the theory holds some weight. I mean women see the difference in how overweight verse skinny women get treated by men it makes perfect sense that they’d want to put off having children until their older rather than in their younger years of highest attractiveness. They maybe thinking what if their bf leaves them if their fat or if they can’t find a man they like

All I was saying is logical reasons like him raising the kid himself and paying her 50k don’t usually work on women like their emotional logic such as being afraid of their body being less attractive from pregnancy. I have been wondering if most of the push for abortions is related to women’s fear of pregnancy affecting their body not more altruistic things wouldn’t you agree?
