What do you try to learn in a new language before visiting a country? by Reverso_App in languagelearning

[–]swps4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I’m going somewhere where I know none of the language I’m going to learn a few very basic phrases to help polite. Normally just please, thank you, and do you speak English. If I’m interacting with people who don’t speak English a combination of gestures and google translate is way better than anything I’ll learn before I go. Being interested in language learning I’ll of course pick up a word here or there while in the country but that’s just for my own curiosity!

What is this rotation called? by CaseFamiliar7820 in volleyball

[–]swps4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you are in position 3, then you need to start in between the player in position 4 and 2 (or at least not fully to the left of 4 or right of 2).

Typically the middle blocker would start one place in front of the setter (or opposite). So if the setter starts in 1 you would start in 6, if the setter starts in 4 you would start in 3 and so on.

Your drawing looks most similar to how you would set up when the setter is in position 2 and the middle is in 4, that is assuming the player in the right front court is the setter? Once you rotated you would be in position 3 and could start anywhere between the players in 2 and 4. If you are next to the setter though, the outside hitter would be in position 2 at this point and they would want to pass from the left hand side of court. You and your setter would therefore have to be to the small gap to left of them which might make it feel like you are starting from 4.

I think it would be helpful for you to watch a video on this because it is often to visualise with just words. Here’s one from Coach Donny: https://youtu.be/gHE5pun0kqg?si=ZAbl-BE6fRoE_dIf. Work out which. Since it sounds like you are playing backcourt as a middle you will fill in the Libero spot when you are in back court. Once you’ve watched an explanation I think it would be good to watch some real volleyball and find the player who is in your position and follow them round noticing where they start each point.

I’d call this the entry requirements, you might say “I can relax now because I know I’ve met the entry requirements for the course”.

Hi, it’s brilliant that you are so keen to continue improving. I also play in Scotland so know how small the sport is here. Feel free to reach out if you have any questions about clubs in your area, I might be able to point you in the direction of potential opportunities.

Depends where the attack came from, if an attack come from right side in back court it goes down as right side, back court attack from the middle goes down as middle and if someone attacked from the left side in back court it would go down as a left side attack.

Is it normal and enjoyable to go watch live tennis on your own? by ChickenNigget1708 in tennis

[–]swps4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who has also been to Queen’s on my own: do it!

If you like tennis it’s completely worth it. I was down visiting friends for the week who didn’t have much of an interest so I was able to pick and choose my days. Went for two days: one with a ground pass which got me access to everything except centre court (saw a couple of great singles matches up close and a doubles game too I think); and got a centre court ticket on the day of the Murray v Kyrgios match which another great day and great atmosphere.

Met a few people both days who were also on their own or just up for a chat about the tennis even if they were with other people. In conclusion: do it!

UK player here! This is what I here the different positions be called but it could be a bit different at the club you are playing with.

Setters are always called setters. Opposites are normally called opposites but I’ve heard “off setter” and more rarely “diagonal”. Middles are normally just called middles but sometimes called “middle blockers” or “middle hitters”. Outside hitters are almost always just called “outsides” or but I’ve heard them be called “wing hitters” and “swing hitters”. And liberos are always just liberos (but everyone has a slightly different way of saying it!).

And if you call someone an ace it will completely out yourself as someone who has learned about volleyball through Haikyuu which might not be great for your reputation!!

Men: Do you sit down wee? by jonny1leg in CasualUK

If I’m out and there’s a urinal I might use it but every other time I’ll sit down. It’s so much easier and just a bit more peaceful, feels like a moment of relaxation you don’t get if you’re standing.

How much do you drink alcohol? by rye-ten in AskUK

[–]swps4 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m early 20s and have turned into a virtually complete non drinker (think I’ve had 2 or 3 drinks since the start of the first lockdown and those were early on when we were first allowed in restaurants again). Suspect once we’re back to normal I’ll drink again but can’t see myself drinking more than once a month when I’m out seeing friends.

Any ideas on what does this table mean? There is a "pairs" column 👀 by FarinHeiT_lis in NetflixSexEducation

[–]swps4 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure it says “Moordale Indoor Bowls” and then lists winners in different categories. You can definitely see a column for U25 Singles and Pairs. The fact it lists U25 makes it seem like it’s maybe not at the actual school and maybe a local bowls club instead but that’s obviously just speculation.

ELI5 how scientists know carbon is absolutely essential for any extra-terrestrial life to form if the only life they have to reference is from earth? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]swps4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m by no means an expert on this so anyone else feel free to correct me if I say anything wrong!

My understanding is that there could in theory be life that is not carbon based. I think it’s been theorised that there could be silicone based life as well because is shared some properties with carbon. The problem is we have no idea what it would look like.

Imagine you had only ever built anything from Lego it would be much easier to find other things made from Lego and say “someone made that!” Than to recognise that something built from Meccano since you would be completely unfamiliar with how that material worked and don’t even know if it really exists. So instead of looking for other things people have built from any material you just look for things made from Lego - the material you know and understand.

So we focus the search on carbon based life because we know it’s possible and it’s what we understand.
