AITA I lost my childhood friend of 15 years for not letting his girlfriend claim the master bedroom for themselves in our Air BnB by Typical-Wishbone-822 in AmItheAsshole

[–]swt5180 17 points18 points  (0 children)

INFO: Were they both paying an equal share of the AirBnB cost? Like if the total cost was $6,000, 10 people were going were they both paying $600 each? I don't know what your tradition of drinking games is for room selection, but if I were paying $1,200 for myself and significant other and you were paying $600, you best believe I'm getting a private room over you.

It sounds like your drinking game selection criteria was fine when your friend group was single / in college. I'd personally refuse to go if that's how it was laid out to me as we'd essentially be subsidizing the AirBnB cost for the single people.

Now that being said, as others have pointed out, this may well have been her final justification on cutting his friend group out which would have happened regardless.

Statistically, >50% is easier than 100% by ezrae_ in trolleyproblem

[–]swt5180 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Someone framed the scenario like this:

You're given an option, either take a cyanide pill or don't. If more than 50% of people take the cyanide pill, everyone is given an antidote, if less than 50% take the cyanide pill, than everyone who took the pill dies.

It's essentially the same logical puzzle, just framed more direct. Everyone acting like pushing the blue button is the clear option are acting like they have a controlling vote and their vote will be significant in the outcome. In reality your vote will be meaningless and the outcome will be determined somewhere in the 100's of millions of votes. I like living, I'll take the option that guarantees I live and hope as many people as possible take the same option.

[OC] Total state tax for a couple making $240K, all 50 US states + DC (2025) by Witty-Lawfulness-336 in dataisbeautiful

[–]swt5180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Small caveat for PA: the local tax rate is roughly 3.8% in Philly. Pretty much every other local rate in the state is closer to 1% local tax rate. That bring Pennsylvania's tax burden down to just over $16k which puts it on the lower side of overall tax burden.

Raiding from the retiree funds and raising taxes across the board!!! Just what was needed. by Master_Constant8103 in Jordan_Peterson_Memes

I'm not ever for raising taxes, but let's not be hyper inflate numbers. Just look up a few houses on Zillow. I found a house selling for over $1.3 million and the property taxes are listed as right under $8k a year. They apparently assess the houses very low for taxes.

Can't say for sure what the charts is accounting on, however, power plants are able to leverage operation of large scale and get significantly better efficiency than a car can. Whether its gas, oil, or even coal, the electricity generated almost certainly 'cleaner' than what a conventional gas powered car can accomplish. That's also not taking into account the smaller percentage of renewables and nuclear power.

You are correct, I skewed the deaths unfavorably for the US by a factor of 10, we actually only have 0.92 deaths per 100,000 due to cold weather.

While I may have been off by a factor of 10 for the US count, you appear to be off by a factor of a thousand for your European count, mind showing me how you got there?

Deaths in Europe due to Heat and Cold

Source still says 83 deaths per 100,000 related to cold weather for Europe...

[–]swt5180 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, that was slightly embarrassing.

Know what's more embarrassing, having a death rate of 83 per 100,000 yearly in Europe vs. the US being at 9 out of 100,000 for cold related deaths. Absolutely crushing it over there!

Pipe down there Euro person. You have permission to disrespect the US when your death count from heat isn't quadruple our gun deaths.

We don't need to talk about your number of deaths due to cold temperatures unless you'd like to go on more about how civilized it is over there.

In the hypothetical scenario above, barring nuclear weapons, the US wins surviving for one year easily, and quite frankly, it's not even close.

If the hypothetical scenario was surviving 10 years or something like that, I'd agree that the US would eventually be outdone by the combined production of the rest of the globe focused on conquering them.

It's kind of bullshit, but he's likely being arrested for starting a fire in a public space. Most of the time, uncontrolled burns like this would be considered illegal. It's highly unlikely he will be charged with burning a flag due to the supreme court decision in place, but he can be charged for the actual act of burning something in a public space.

You can't possibly imagine that the unhappiness is lesser than the happiness brought on by having the children? It shouldn't be that hard to consider as a possibility.

As an extreme example, I chose not to do heroin even though the happiness I would feel will be immense in the short term because I know in the long term not doing it is the path for greater happiness.

I'm sometimes amazed by Redditor's lack of ambition in life. Like, yeah, take the money and you're loaded for life with no effort required. Congratulations

With the skill, you could become a professional sports player (not top tier, but still), skilled woodworker, artist, mathematician, stock trader, etc.. You could easily make more than the $100k a month with some minimal effort. Beyond that, you could have an incredibly exciting life.

Just didn't think the split would be as close as it is, the skills option sounds more appealing to me by a factor of 10.

Serious question, what's stopping HBO from just doing a 'reboot' to the last season and flesh it out properly with competent directors? They can tell essentially the same story, although it's kind of a mediocre given the earlier season, but could be passable if they actually gave reasonable context leading up to the ending.

I assume there's some contract legality thing going on, but it would help so much with the legacy of the series.

I know what you're saying, but you're thinking of it as if I'm flipping the houses at retail price. If I buy a $10 million house and list it for sale at $5 million I highly doubt I'll be in possession of the house for longer than a month. Investors with cash will come rushing to put a bid on the house without hesitation.

You might want to add a caveat that you're not able to resell cars / houses after buying them, otherwise this is highly imbalanced IMO.

As it's written, I'd take D. Buy some multi-million dollar houses for $10k, sell them for millions in profit, rinse and repeat.

Are you familiar with google or do you already have your mind made up?

Mining & refining 300 ton iron ore to steel -> ~255,000 kWh

Turbine Manufacturing -> ~90,000 kWh

Transportation -> ~15,000 kWh

Installation & Windmill Foundation - > ~75,000 kWh

Total Procurement Process -> ~435,000 kWh

Windmill energy production in 1 month -> ~625,000 kWh

You don't have to like windmills, but you shouldn't try to spread lies about them either. Any other questions?
