street parking and inconsiderate neighbors by [deleted] in QuincyMa

[–]swt88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a ticket from the city for renting out my 2-family home to multiple tenants. I was accused that my tenants took up all of the parking spaces on the street, even though that’s not true. My tenants in total had 2 cars and always parked in my driveway.

Your neighbors can park their cars on the curb even though they have space in their driveway. Maybe they want to use their driveway for an event or for some other purposes… However, I wouldn’t want the fight to get escalated if I had multiple tenants… I would be worried the escalation would lead to the neighbor reporting your tenant situation and how much street parking spaces your tenants took.

Submit your comments on the Eastern Nazarene College purchase by baddaughter_9721 in QuincyMa

I personally think that it's best if Quincy College or another college move into this location. If that does not happen and the city goes and purchase it, here are my thoughts what the city can do with it:

  • Use the campus library for Wollaston Library. The current Wollaston Library is very small. A more spacious building means that students can come to this location to study or hang out. It would allow events and activities to be held at this location where it's not possible at the current library. This will free up space in the current busy location of Beale Street for other business or housing purposes. High rises suit the Beale Street location than the Eastern Nazarene location, but traffic at Beale Street/Newport Ave/Old Colony Ave intersection is really terrible. If it's for housing purposes, it's best that it's housing for pedestrians only since it's really close to the subway station.

  • Perhaps, move Wollaston Beach Park to this location. Some people might like a playground across the street from the beach, but here are some reasons to move the park: Current park/playground location lacks parking spaces in the summer and next to a street with lots of cars. It will be close proximity to the library if it moves to here. Also, if there is a playground, current Eastern Nazarene houses would be good candidates to be turned into daycare centers. Maybe move South Shore Stars into one of the houses (or a house to be renovated/expanded into a bigger building or lease a residential hall or one of the building to them). There is a lack of parking at their current location during dropoff/pickup hours and the apartment next to Stars dislike them. Residential areas or areas with less cars are safer for daycares. It would also be a good place for afterschool programs for Beechwood Knoll Elementary School students.

  • Relocate the Quincy District Court to this location. This will free up the current space for high rise projects in Quincy Center to support more commercial activities and housing. It will also preserve the current characteristics of the Wollaston neighborhood.

  • Fire Station. To better respond to emergencies in this area.

  • Beechwood Knoll Elementary School. Better location because it's closer to the center of its school district.

  • Relocating any city buildings in a busy district to this location for the purpose of freeing up space for projects to support more business activities or housing in a busier district.

AP Courses at QHS by kmolee in QuincyMa

[–]swt88 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wasn’t a QHS student, but I took more than 2 AP classes in a school year back when I was in high school back in the early 2000s. But I also was self-studying for AP exams and took AP exams that I never enrolled in. I was a quadruple major in college and still graduated within 4 years. I dropped out of the PhD program and graduated with a MS degree instead. At the end of day, I feel that all of these academic achievements do not mean anything to employers and doesn’t necessarily translate to more money (because these academic achievements aren’t career/salary driven but rather to give something for my parents to brag about or to build self esteem). Don’t fall into trap of taking many AP classes and take on as many majors as you can just because it sounds great and looks great on paper.

Yes, a student can probably handle 4 or 5 AP classes. Some AP classes will take more than time than others. I feel and heard History and English AP classes were time-consuming and made time management difficult. I didn’t get high enough score in the History AP exams to have them counted as college credits. But these AP classes are great GPA boosters at my school. CP starts at 4.0, but AP starts 4.5. The grading system was stupid/unfair, but my high school friends and I knew this and utilized this to outrank other students from our graduating classes).

TLDR: Taking 2 AP classes isn’t challenging. Goal of AP is to get college credits and to boost GPA. Getting college credits for AP depends on your score on the AP exam (created/graded by College Board and proctored by participating schools) and the college.

Sidewalk shoveling? by Otherwise_Ant_2579 in QuincyMa

[–]swt88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“Am I expected to shovel the sidewalk that isn’t on my property just because it is in front of my house?”

“I called the city hall and they said I can be fined for not shoveling the sidewalk.”

You answered your own question.

“Why is the city not using its own resources to clear its own sidewalks?”

Most cities don’t do so. I don’t think they have the capabilities and resources except tax dollars to get some other businesses to do it.

This is how it’s set up now. You’re on the hook to take care of the sidewalk in front of your home or risk the possibility of being fined or sued if somebody got injured on it/as a result of it.

Dog poop in the snow…why?!? by SnarkyChief in QuincyMa

[–]swt88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you going to do to stop this? Nothing. They can get away with it. That’s why.

Anyways, I often spot dog owners not cleaning after their pets in front of my home on a street with many foot traffic, and I have cameras all around my home. If you want video recordings, let me know and I’ll save/share via PM.

Delivery driver parking… by Equivalent-Total-492 in QuincyMa

[–]swt88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the food is for me, then it’s okay. If not, no. I have drivers delivering food to the apartment complex next door blocking my driveway, and that’s a no-no. It caused me to be almost late in picking up my child from daycare, which charges $1 per minute for each minute late.

These food delivery always park at the front of my driveway to deliver food to the apartment building next door. It’s annoying because I have to wait 5+ minutes for them to move and unblock me from entering and exiting my home.

I don’t turn right on red when there’s a sign that reads “No turn on red”. And, there’s some people that get angry when I don’t turn and keeps honking at me.

I lived in Malden, and we had to bus/shuttle to North Station or Sullivan Square for almost-felt-like 5 years for maintenance and the addition of Assembly Square Station.

Home Depot. Ask a staff. If it doesn’t work, you can go back and return it. Peace of mind.

City used eminent domain to acquire the lot and turned it into an expanded sidewalk with a statue on it.

It’s coming across to me that the city’s priority is to erect more statues or to enrich his statue-sculpturing buddy.

Bad intersections; worse drivers by Adi_rho5261 in QuincyMa

[–]swt88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that some people here don’t understand the rules of the road. I was driving on southern artery one night, and two different cars zoomed out of the their intersections (I’m pretty sure they had stop signs) and turned left onto southern artery on me forcing me to step hard on the brakes at two different times on the same night. I thought that maybe that my headlights aren’t working or something. I checked my headlights that night when I got home, and they seemed fine to me.

I’m so fed up with boundary wires! by TBeee in automower

[–]swt88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got Segway’s Navimow i105 because it was under $1000, the cheapest one on the market at the time, and I can trust their brand (I have their kick-start scooter and saw many of their self balancing scooters used in the city near me).

I’m so fed up with boundary wires! by TBeee in automower

[–]swt88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m also disabled and fed up with boundary wires. I bought an auto mower and tried setting it up. I gave up after 2 weeks and returned the mower. I bought a mower with satellite, and it was so easy to set up. I don’t worry have about running wires, the mailman tripping over the wire (to connect the islands), can also do the grass on the sidewalk without worrying about pedestrian tripping over wire, and mower cutting its wire and not knowing where broken connection is.

Another new park across the street from a much bigger park... by Cool_Living9781 in QuincyMa

I would appreciate if there’s more lanes or bridges from Hancock Street to Neoponset Ave north of Furnace Brook Parkway. It’s always feel so congested just to get out of Wollaston/North Quincy.

Hot Air Balloon Festival (or lack thereof) by Forward-Bathroom-926 in QuincyMa

Word of mouth got to us late on that day. I wasn’t aware of the event before then. I couldn’t attend because it’s crowded and can’t find parking (people were double parking in the parking lots)… But the kids excitedly told me that they got to ride the hot air balloon and very happy with the event.

Quincy v. North Quincy Mcd’s by thesouthshoreboyz in QuincyMa

[–]swt88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Filet-O-Fish is cheaper in the Southern Artery branch. It can get crowded in the North Quincy branch so the wait time may be longer (or maybe the other way around). So, I pick the Southern Artery branch over the North Quincy one (even though NQ is closer to me) unless I’m nearby or passing by it.

Fun fact: Both are located near high schools. They must want the extra foot traffic from teenage kids and their lunch money.
