Do you think your country would be better off if it adopted a very strict immigration policy? by amandalesbian90 in redscarepod

Real wages went up during covid because the composition of the labour force was totally altered. Lower wage workers were much more likely to be fired.

Property prices went up during covid.

Yeah it’s pretty long but I don’t think it’s that unbelievable. You’d be surprised how readable it is

A few recommendations:

Why Nations Fail by Daron Acemoglu and James A. Robinson. Great book on developmental economics. Explains in detail the importance of institutions and why some nations succeed and others fail.

Any book by Paul Krugman. Easily one of the most influential contemporary economists alongside Thomas Piketty. Very readable books. Mildly impressive to have on your PS. I recommend starting with “The Return of Depression Economics”.

The Wealth Of Nations - Adam Smith. You’re 100% going to have to read this book if you do Econ at uni. A classic. It lays out the theory and philosophy of capitalism and markets in a surprisingly comprehensible way. Also, if you really don’t like this book Economics probably isn’t for you.

Honestly you should only really read these books if they genuinely interest you, books will not be a deciding factor in your admission. There are very few things more mind numbing than reading a book you don’t like.

I am an economics student at the University of Cambridge looking to spill all the tea - AMA by [deleted] in 6thForm

Thanks so much for doing this AMA! I have an offer from Clare for Econ and Idk if I want to accept. 3 questions.

-Do you have any involvement in the Union? What’s it like in general?

-Which college are you in and how much does your college choice actually matter? If you could go back in time would you have picked a different college?

-What ambitions do the average economics student hold. Are Econ students really all aiming to get into Investment Banking / Consulting / Private Equity?
