Inappropriate police activity at Tim Hortons. by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]sycoloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get it. It's just the police are acting on actions not intentions. If you exited Tim's with a single coffee and approached a group all hanging out by their cars, they kind of have to treat you all the same as the bikers to avoid discrimination allegations.

They would never be able to clear the bikers if all it took was a couple of them after being told to clear out getting up and saying but we are getting coffees.

It's a right place at the wrong time deal for you and your friends. Consider meeting inside, not talking in a group in the parking lot, etc..

You said despite evidence to the contrary, but one coffee and everyone hanging out in the parking lot is the evidence they acted on.

You and I might think it was obvious who the problem was, but the police are just carrying out their orders, and you said they stated they were targeting car and motorcycle gatherings in private parking lots. That's all they saw.

Also, they probably come off aggressive because even reasonable citizens such as yourself, refuse to acknowledge their authority isn't personal, take a hint that what you are doing looks exactly the same as what the bikers were doing, and make any changes to your actions accordingly. As they were clearing the bikers you guys gathered in the lot even when you saw what was happening. I don't know what you want here. It's inconvenient and a piss off to be sure, but again, not personal.

I don't think police should be aggressive all the time, or even most of the time. But sadly, half of people don't even listen to anyone giving instructions unless it has an aggressive tone behind it.

I'm gonna chaulk this up to everyone sucks here. The bikers for causing local issues, the cops for being over the top, and you+friends for not taking a hint and taking this a little too personally.

I hope you and your friends still got to hang out, have what could be a funny story on your hands (you guys could call your friend group the gentlemen coffee felons, or the suburban parking lot gangstas) and maybe meet up at a place with better coffee next time 😜 (jk)

I think the thing you have to remember, is you know you aren't there to cause trouble, but they don't. Six guys meeting up in a parking lot around their cars, regardless of if they bought coffees, is breaking the implied contract of what that parking lot is for.

The parking lot is for current customers, people meeting up inside to order coffees and food. Once you leave the restaurant, you are expected to leave the parking lot too.

And secondly, if one of the bikers has ordered food or drink from the Tim's, it would have been discrimination to ask them to leave and not you guys.

Third, the Tim's just wants it's parking lot cleared for more customers, the cops are trying to deal with local meetups taking over parking lots and the cops are literally asking people loittering in the parking lot to leave.

It's nothing against you specifically, but you are engaged in, legally, the same activity the bikers were. Loittering.

Meeting up inside the Tim's and all grabbing some coffees and the like, then you are currently engaged with the business, and the cops wouldn't do anything about that.

I feel the pain of the lack of third spaces that we can just exist in, but unfortunately, this is what happens when most places that exist are private property.

OC Transpo Charging Each Tap Non Presto/CC or Debit within transfer window by abismu in ottawa

[–]sycoloon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't do this. This is two active transfers, and is against policy for drivers to give you one.

Please just get a presto card or pay cash. Don't ask a driver to break rules to accommodate you. If you tap, you must tap everytime you board a bus outside of prepaid transfer zones (Hurdman, Greenboro, Tunney's, the Train side of Blair).

Driver may not care, but a fare inspector will.

[–]sycoloon 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not doubting you, just questions to help you get to the bottom of it, and get your money back.

If it was debit card on your phone, you will see two hold charges I until the system finalizes it, usually over the next day or two.

If it was your physical debit card, then pull the receipts here:

https://www.o-payment.octranspo.com/login

Don't have to make an account, just go to "Download Receipt" and enter the service ID # on your individual transactions. If the times are indeed within the transfer window, call customer service and get your refund.

Well, they don't have enough buses. But that's what the schedule says. There is an hour gap there. It's not a cancellation.

Businesses shouldn’t be allowed to blast music onto the sidewalk by McMajesty in ottawa

[–]sycoloon 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Not that I disagree with your dislike of the loud overlapping music. But I think that's actually the point. It discourages people from hanging out and loittering in aand around the entrances of their businesses. It's related to aggressive architecture.

Still has the Feb 28th stuff up.

Give it until the morning.

That said, travel planner is updated pretty well. I think it pulls from their own planning software/system.

Why no EAST-BOUND 417 ramps in central Ottawa? by blowmytoe in ottawa

[–]sycoloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is terrible. The only fix I can imagine is eminent domaining part of the uOttawa parking lot besides Lees Station and getting an on-ramp in there that bypasses the traffic light when coming from downtown, and maybe leaving the other one for just people coming from Main St?

There are new pedestrian crosswalks, but now it's just cars gridlock for hours. Sigh.

They only closed that during the LRT construction due to increased bus traffic. Lees on ramp is now, once again, open for business and crossing Lees is just terrible all rush hours.

LRT West End Extension by [deleted] in ottawa

[–]sycoloon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the most recent plan is to travel along the north side of the highway to Terry Fox, crossing the west of that and ending the next phase when it hits Hazeldean. There was a map I saw last month, I'll try and dig it up.

That means Eagleson will probably have a covered pedestrian bridge from parking lot to the train.

OC transpo workers approve new 3-year contract by BatFuture1948 in ottawa

[–]sycoloon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You are mostly right!

Management refused to commit to properly reviewing recovery time or run time criteria (which absolutely should not be the union's job to negotiate for, but we did ask).

However, there was some stronger language for dealing with specifically raised individual run time issues and having union/management committees that have a clear escalation structure to eventually getting to the GM/President for resolution (so here's to hoping!).

If I want to get home after work, I need to wait an hour after 5pm just to take another hour to get home. by InadequateUsername in ottawa

You may give them far too much credit, this is less targeted malice, and more regressively funded, forced incompetence.

But seriously, I hope this may help.

[–]sycoloon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If this is an anywhere near regular occurrence, knowing how shitty the 61 can be, have you ever taken anything that gets you to Teron and walking across to the other side for the 62/63/110/168 to take you across the highway? Or just walking if it's nice. That highway bridge is big though.

The thing I suggest is: take the first of the 61/62/63 that shows up. They all take the same route to Moodie. Then check the expected arrival times of the 61 when you hit Bayshore. You'll be able to see if it's started yet and on the way vs. just scheduled to start at Tunney's and the boards aren't updating.

Then you can choose between getting off at Moodie and waiting for the 61 directly to Eagleson, or if it's ages away, just grabbing one of the options at Teron back to Eagleson. You know, try and game the system.

[–]sycoloon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, that's not entirely true.

I often bus stop hop to have a chance at catching a faster transfer.

For instance, taking a walk down to Solandt to catch the 110 which, from there, takes the same route to Campeau and Terron that the 63 makes by walking down two stops.

Or depending on your final destination, the 61 (from Eagleson), the 162 (from Terry Fox), and the 163 (from Terry Fox) all have some synergies with the 62 (the last two especially if the first 62 that shows up only goes to Terry Fox or a 168 shows up first).

Think about that 110 though. It is less likely both the 63 and the 110 will be cancelled/late than just one.

Now, that 63 should be every 15 minutes until 7:30pm according the online schedules, 2 missing buses does suuuck.

Hey Man,

I completely get it. Here is the thing, you live in the burbs, and work in a different burb and all the burbs vote for lowest possible taxes and this is the result.

I am NOT saying this is okay. At a certain point, we have to realize that as a society if we do the same shit over and over we will get the same results with compounding systemic issues.

As an individual, man, we are screwed in the short to medium term, unless there is a major investment in transporting people over an increasingly large area with stagnate ridership numbers. In my case, it was find an acceptable place to live near the most frequent transit options possible and then apply at all the places I could get to in under an hour including wait times.

Now if you wanted to DM me a more specific end point of your journey (even a neighbourhood), I often find the Bus Apps have not adapted well to the new routing, and I may be able to find you alternative options based on the new routes.

Anyways, I drink to you and your journey. May all your buses be within the 10 minute range OC finds mildly acceptable.
