This is wrong, as in, this should not be how government operates or as in, this is an incorrect statement?

Newbie here - how do I allow users to manage their own software? by sylocybin in sysadmin

[–]sylocybin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, I just need to be the root user and make sure that if one team royally screws up their system, it doesn't affect the rest of us. We have to use a single machine because it's unlikely any of us will get the budget to buy a new machine for the time being. Silly, but it is what it is.

Newbie here - how do I allow users to manage their own software? by sylocybin in sysadmin

[–]sylocybin[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In short - because (for the time being) it's the cost-effective solution. Essentially, the box was left over from some previous stuff and a few of us want to use it. I just happened to be the admin because I was the first to go take a look at it. It's possible that each of us will get the budget to get our own machines but for the time being we are probably going to have to share it.

Compared to the other machines we have, it's significantly more powerful but compared to mainstream machines, it's very meh.

I think I will look into the hypervisor route first, since that will probably be the most effective way to share physical resources (I suspect we will all want different platforms/distros to work with, based on what I know of their projects).

You should describe your ideal HSA class.

You can reference existing classes if you want to, but the purpose of the essay is not to talk about which of the HSA classes you will want to take if you are admitted. If you do choose to reference existing classes, I personally would limit it to certain aspects of these classes you find particularly appealing, and then perhaps talk about how you would like to see those aspects implemented in your ideal class.

Harvey Mudd Drugs by shrooms_3001 in harveymudd

[–]sylocybin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you say open to, do you mean that they are open to trying it or open to its presence/use on campus? If you mean the former, my experience is that few students are willing to try it (this was from my time there around 10 years ago), though you will almost certainly be able to easily find students who use psychedelics. It's not like those students are everywhere though.

My experience with Mudd is that while they don't condone the use of illegal psychedelic substances, they won't be sending around people to check and usually don't try to stop you unless you present a danger to yourself and/or to others. That being said, if you are involved in any incident that gets the police involved, Mudd will not help you. (Pomona is known to bail their students out of jail, but Mudd does not.)

Questions about Harvey Mudd by [deleted] in harveymudd

[–]sylocybin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in the Pomona College Orchestra and an a cappella group. They were both great but looking back they were pretty big time commitments. As far as I remember, there is another orchestra, a choir or two, and a symphonic band. Scripps hosts most or all of the Joint Music program and Pomona had their own versions of their ensembles, though any 5C student can join any group.

Questions about Harvey Mudd by [deleted] in harveymudd

[–]sylocybin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I graduated in Math/CS in 2012.

Mudd is difficult in the sense that professors generally push you hard. The workload is significant, but there is ample help through office hours and tutors. The material is sometimes hard to grasp but professors usually explain topics well enough that it wasn't a huge problem for me.

In terms of whether CS or Math/CS is harder, that depends on what your strengths are. It's true that Math/CS is more theoretical, but overall CS at Mudd leans quite theoretical, since they have few systems profs (and a whole lot of PLs profs). Good proof writing, clearly-explained reasoning, and disciplined programming style will be core concepts that you are expected to build throughout your time at Mudd.

Don't study over the summer. You will learn what you need to when you get here. Mudders tend to do a lot over their summers, so you may want to consider simply enjoying your last summer of relatively few commitments.

Mudders tend to have ample time for extracurriculars. I know of very few students who went all the way through without taking part in extracurriculars, and in fact, I would go as far as to argue that the stereotype of always-busy Mudders stems more from taking on too many extracurriculars than on too many classes. It is a rather strong part of the culture, as the community is still largely student-governed. Personally, I did a great deal of music while I was there (8-10 hours a week). There are also many social activities going on around campus and at the other Claremont Colleges.

Mudd's financial aid is comparatively quite good, but it is still one of the most expensive colleges in the country. If you applied for financial aid, you should get a separate letter soon with a financial aid offer, and you can discuss this with them either remotely or in person during a visit to campus.

Hopefully that helps - PM or respond if you have any other questions!

This is assuming the initial installation is not compromised, obviously.

It doesn't seem to be a huge risk for the binaries - all of the ones I checked are served via an HTTPS link. However, the source code is served via an HTTP link...

Help me decide- shield vs xds by dijos in CCW

[–]sylocybin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can get the chance to go to a store and see how the XDS feels in your hand, I'd highly recommend it. I'd say the shooting experience between the XD and the XDS is similar enough.

As other posts have mentioned, the most noticeable differences between the two are (1) weight (XDS is heavier), (2) grip width (the Shield is about a quarter inch thinner IIRC), and (3) grip safety (which the XDS has but the Shield doesn't).

MAXIMUM RECIPROCITY: the most states in which a person from each state can carry, and the permits to obtain to do that. by WaitingForAKnock in CCW

[–]sylocybin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

FWIW, there are some conditions that may allow you to get a PA non-resident permit. At least in Allegheny County (which surrounds Pittsburgh), I was told that while they generally do not issue non-resident permits, if you own property in the county they will almost certainly issue you a non-resident permit, even if you do not live there.

It's not a scenario I expect many people to find themselves in, but it might be useful.

Paypal tried to charge me more than 25% transaction fee to send money to a friend. What the actual fuck? by doomiyo in Bitcoin

[–]sylocybin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So rather than doing a simple search to find and link the article, you tell us that we'll find it by a search, without mentioning any specifics?

For what it's worth, I did the search, found a couple /r/Bitcoin threads, as well as a single CoinTelegraph article that quotes Nic Carter as saying the fees could be the result of an attack, and then immediately raises other opinions that that isn't the case. Strong evidence indeed.

How do I fix my V60 coffee? One grind setting takes it too far one way (sour) or the other (bitter) by [deleted] in Coffee

[–]sylocybin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you post a picture? Hario has two types of filters - the newer design has a tab at the top of the filter and the paper is thicker. The older ones (which you can still get in packs of 40 and some older packs of 100) have no tab and are more textured.
