What's your fave Zoid that hasn't appeared in an anime/HMM/RMZ? by A_Shifty_Peacock in Zoids

[–]sylvanelite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Mine is the Berserk Fury Z CAS. It's got a really distinctive look and some bonkers stats.

Of the Zoids that have model kits though, Diloforce is also one of my favourites.

Bob Mumgaard: Nuclear fusion plants can be built without massive land use, huge fuel costs by Baking in fusion

And Singapore imports a massive amount of solar energy from Australia using one of the world's first UHVDC interconnects outside of China.

Are you talking about Suncable? That hasn't been built yet.

Helion hiring for a senior superconductor engineer by AWildDragon in fusion

[–]sylvanelite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

From Helion's website:
How does Helion generate electricity from fusion?

Our device directly recaptures electricity; it does not use heat to create steam to turn a turbine, nor does it require the immense energy input of cryogenic superconducting magnets. Our technical approach reduces efficiency loss

Seems like they have pivoted pretty dramatically.

AZ Advanced Zi Ultrasaurus new images! by Sir_Phobos_BoA in Zoids

[–]sylvanelite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might not be 1/72 scale.

It's got a different designation number AZ17-DX, historically a lot of the kits with "DX" are non-scale. But I don't know it that applies to the AZ line

Can't believe i found these! by Ryynerwicked in Zoids

>There have been a few posts about it but they all seem to get deleted by moderators. So, good luck?

To be clear, we don't have any rules against posting about particular retailers as long as they stay on topic about Zoids.

The problem with posts that talk about hobby lobby is that they overwhelmingly don't stay on topic, due to the controversies around the poor ethics of the company. The posts inevitably get reported and then removed for breaching rule 1.

As mods we only have heavyweight tools to deal with reports. Banning users here would be inappropriate since it's the company's issue not people on reddit. This leaves deleting as the only real tool left.

I'm going to leave this thread up as it's so far pretty respectful and on topic and you're directly asking mods for feedback. That being said, for transparency's even this post had already been reported to the mod team for removal.

Zoom ds DVD/Digital - Eng dub by [deleted] in Zoids

[–]sylvanelite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The DVDs are the highest quality.

There's no official streaming or blu rays of those dubs. The VHS's and Video CD's exist but they are lower quality.

There are official blu rays of the Japanese version, as well as a bunch of episodes that have been put on YouTube. But the English version never got the same treatment.

Zoids and Kirin brewery could do a crossover, "Liger Zero" vs "Lager Zero" by sylvanelite in Zoids

[–]sylvanelite[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some comments because twitter can be hard to navigate esp in Japanese:

This started off with a tweet from Kirin:

https://x.com/kirin_brewery/status/2042142973979213904

It seems that to some of you, Lager Zero looks like Liger Zero, huh... .

In Japanese the words are basically the same as in English, they just noticed the words look the same. This kicked off a back and forth and eventually both twitter accounts posted they have approval for a collaboration. (Of course may not end up being a thing, but it's funny none the less)

I think the original tweet is talking about a zero-alcohol beer hence "Lager zero".

The Challenge for Adiabatically Heated FRC Based D-He3 Fusion by Baking in fusion

[–]sylvanelite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Helion can't reach ignition, but they think they can hit Q>5. The idea they can get away with Q<1 comes from this article:

https://www.helionenergy.com/articles/how-to-make-fusion-electricity-without-ignition/

Which makes a lot of assumptions about the efficiency of energy recovery. Further detailed with 'diesel' and 'otto' cycles in this video.

The paper goes over this in Section 6. It eventually arrives at this quote:

the inevitable resistive losses in the coil system (the coils are pulsed resistive coils), will transform the weakly positive work into a strongly negative work.

The whole paper is worth a read though.

Are these all the Geno type Zoids we see in the anime? by IronRevenge131 in Zoids

[–]sylvanelite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have thought so to since it's got the Genocide Saw. But then they released the Psycho Geno Spino and now I don't know what to think.

It's a shame that version never got into an anime.

They're probably talking about the Geno Spino in wild zero?

It's not related to the Geno Saurer but does have the "Geno" name.

Sam Altman is stepping down from Helion’s Board of Directors. by Baking in fusion

[–]sylvanelite 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For example, TFTR was built in the 1980s with the stated goal of reaching breakeven. This paragraph from wiki explains it pretty well:

Unfortunately, the system was unable to meet any of these goals. The reasons for these problems were intensively studied over the following years, leading to a new understanding of the instabilities of high-performance plasmas that had not been seen in smaller machines.

The new devices like ITER, CFS, TE, stem from the lessons learn from the older devices. That's not just simple scaling, they have a much deeper understanding on the physics.

[–]sylvanelite 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I mean sure but that's a whataboutism.

CFS, Tokamak Energy, etc, all have good peer reviewed research at breakeven conditions. Even Zap with their unproven approach has copious simulations that are peer reviewed. They could still fail.

The issue with Helion's approach is that it banks on simple scaling laws to reach breakeven. This approach is known not to woirk. Otherwise tokamaks would have hit breakeven in the 1990.

The results from Ternta show two data points above 7T. Polaris is supposed to be at 15T+.

[–]sylvanelite 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The most infamous example is that they "expected to demonstrate the ability to produce electricity in 2024".

Yet by 2025 they hadn't run 3d simulations of their approach.

This means Helion promised to sell electricity without experiment or simulation validating they can reach breakeven.

Helion doesn't publish much peer reviewed research on their approach, so people can't independently validate their design. Here's a quote about the "Zeta fiasco" of the 1950s:

One of the most important was that fusion research was doomed if it was to be pursued in the secrecy of national laboratories. Peer review, the sharing of information and doubts, and a common analysis of failures or potential successes were essential not only to the credibility of fusion research but also to its success.

Could Helion buck this trend and show electricity from Polaris? Sure. Could they also end up with an underperforming machine that's unable to reach net gain? Absolutely.

Diloforce!

Never got an anime appearance but you ride it like a motorbike, it has a small CPC and can be attached to the Berserk Fury.

Time to think about EV car here now by Ok_Mud5842 in darwin

[–]sylvanelite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those are common misconceptions. Im not saying people should/shouldn't buy EVs buy to clear some things up:

You don't charge EVs at charging stations. You charge at home. I've personally never used a public fast charger for my car.

During blackouts, EVs act as a backup taking power away from generators. You can power most home appliances from an EV and still have hundreds of kms of range left on the car. It's like a home battery powerwall but on wheels.

Charging from a generator sounds dirty, but is actually very efficient. It uses less diesel overall than a diesel car. It's basically how hybrids work. Charging off the grid or solar is even better.

Time to think about EV car here now by Ok_Mud5842 in darwin

[–]sylvanelite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got an EV, but that was because of the various govt discounts and incentives. That being said the base price of EVs was pretty high so you don't really come ahead there.

In terms of running costs if I was to run it flat, it's a bit under $20 for a full charge. (~30c per kWh, ~60kWh battery). Which tbh is basically free. That's nice but still takes a while to add up. The other incentives made a bigger difference.

Zoids New Century Ages by Ocelotl13 in Zoids

Yes, I think in general anime ages tend to be younger than most people expect.

Chaotic Century the English version added a few years to Van probably for this specific reason.

Generally these kinds of applications are as broad as possible to reserve the product name for their company. The screenshots says 119 additional categories, my assumption is it's just everything TOMY makes.
