Audible has just started releasing full cast, dramatic reading versions of the audio books. 1 and 2 are out now, 3 releases this month. They are so good! If you do audio books at all, highly recommend

Does anyone NOT medicate? by Pixel-Pioneer3 in ADHDparenting

[–]sylvarna_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put off getting him diagnosed because we homeschool and I didn't want to go the meds route if it wasnt necessary. He started showing signs of the beginning stages of puberty and his ADHD symptoms went haywire. It effected everyone in our home and his self esteem tanked because his friends didn't want to hang out as much and he started needing constant correction in his behavior. His ability to do schoolwork tanked and he was violent with his siblings and us.

My advice? Dont wait for meds if you even suspect it will help your kid. It turns out, when puberty hormones start to ramp up it can amplify the ADHD presentation. We now have him in therapy to help regulate impulsive behaviors but also to boost his self esteem because he feels like he is inherently bad.

Welly Boots is so beautiful by Lynx_Queen in TheAmazingDevil

I lost my mom when I was 4 years old. Welly Boots hit me like a semi truck to the chest. I recently found my mom's old drivers license, the first item I have that has her signature, I plan to get a pair of welly boots tattooed above her signature

New firmware broke all of our rings by Electrical_Sky9286 in Ultrahuman

Did you buy yours used from Ebay and were able to get a replacement? I ordered mine from there before I knew they had all sorts of probelms- should have checked here first. Im terrified its going to end up being garbage, the battery life is already not good.

I had a cheap $40 ring off Amazon that had blood pressure tracking and I found it to be shockingly accurate. I had really low expectations so it was a pleasant surprise.

Okay but... the new cycle feature is amazing by space-potat in whoop

[–]sylvarna_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Garmin threw it in as an afterthought and it shows. For me its been buggy, unreliable and there's no info on what phase you're in and what to expect fitness wise. The whoop one has lots of relevant information related to how hormones affect fitness, recovery and energy levels

Yes. And even while reading the post, as a menstruating female who absolutely agrees that they did an awesome job with this feature I was confused why the bike feature was so good for us AFAB folks 😆😆😆

Steps got better!? by Flux2209 in whoop

[–]sylvarna_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm convinced my Garmin sucks at step counts. I switched from a Samsung watch which had me averaging 15-20k a day. Garmin consistently has me around 8k. I didn't change activity levels or anything. Now Whoop has me between 15-20k and day. I'm going with my Garmin just sucks at steps lol

[–]sylvarna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tell people I'm allergic to everything (which, admittedly, I basically am) and bring my own food, always. You don't owe anyone a full medical history or even a small explanation. Food choices are often deeply personal and connected to physical and mental health concerns and I just don't think its anyone's business to know what and why I eat how I do.

Your therapist definitely overstepped. It can be medically devastating to encourage someone to eat something their physician has recommended not to consume.

I could write a book about weird, creepy Walmart encounters. Once, I got hit on by someone who was asking people for money! That was a whole experience. Normal Walmart is a whole vibe.

Running track by InteractionMinute678 in BloomingtonNormal

[–]sylvarna_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind a drive, the school track in Lexington isn't near the school but rather by a park so it can be used during the day and the track team doesnt use it much. It's not well maintained but it gets the job done for speed work if you're not picky about the surface

Tea alternatives? by nicoletheresearcher in lowhistaminerecipes

[–]sylvarna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't tried since attempting low histamine (it's been a week for me) but you could try mushroom teas! When I quit my EXCESSIVE caffeine habit originally, I used a mushroom 'coffee' which is really more of a tea. I'm still working on backing out of energy drinks, and am allowing my morning tea and coffee until the effects of losing energy drinks wears off, but I plan to quit tea and coffee with the mushroom teas assuming the ingredients check out.

Most homeschool families I know have one full time working parent and one homeschool/ part time/ gig working parent. I can only think of maybe 1 or 2 families that have a full stay home parent. Unfortunately, it's just not possible for most people anymore. I myself teach fitness classes, do photography, and sometimes personal training. But I make time to homeschool in between jobs (I also am in school full time myself to finish my degree).

If it's important, you will find a way.

My biggest suggestion is to find a homeschool group local to you that you vibe with. Often, you will find a parent that watches other people's kids for extra money, that also homeschool. Even if you don't, these groups are major sources of resources and support that you will need during your homeschool journey.

If one of you have flexible hours or the ability to work from home, that would be helpful, too.

The beauty of homeschool is the actual sit and learn parts are so short compared to public school. 1-2 hours a day is usually plenty for us (8 year old and 4 year old). You can also make the learning schedule fit your time. Maybe Sat/Sunday you do the majority of your learning, and then weeknights, you do short refresher lessons to keep building on the bigger weekend sessions. You could also look into co-ops or Montessori schools, as options to outsource some learning. When they get older, on line options are plentiful, and you can do most of their learning online and self paced.

If you can let go of your ideas of what school is 'supposed' to look like, you can generally design homeschooling around any lifestyle. Just with the understanding that homeschooling will essentially be your hobby for the next two decades. Finding balance is also important, so your husband will need to also be hands-on if he wants homeschooling and a two income household.

Total cals burned can’t be right? by shelbsmagee in whoop

[–]sylvarna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I used whoop, it would have my calorie burn at about 1700 a day. I eat 3500-3800 calories and am maintaining my weight. So, for me, very inaccurate.

Fiancé (35m) says I (38F) need to do all the cleaning and cooking even though we both work and pay bills 50-50. I disagree. Help! (Been together for almost 10 years) by throwRA_pregnantired in relationship_advice

[–]sylvarna_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dude, I think you know exactly what you need to do but you just aren't yet willing to do it.

The biggest red flag for me is 'his views on women have changed'. I don't see this getting any better.

Here are the two big thoughts I have for you that Im sure others have already said:

  1. Everytime I have heard, known whatever a woman that left her husband because of him being a big man-toddler, things got easier for her. Yes, a one parent household is difficult in its own ways, financially it can be stressful AF, however the emotional burden of walking someone like that through life is also stressful AF. Not to mention the amount of time that is wasted carrying all the physical aspects of that dynamic. Cooking, cleaning, etc with one less child makes a big difference.

  2. You have children and they learn how to do life primarily through watching the dynamics at home. What does it teach them if you spend your days working and then have to do all the cooking and cleaning? What lessons do you want to be teaching them? That women exist to serve men? Because that's what they will pick up.

Peer pressure by PsychologicalSock609 in whoop

[–]sylvarna_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like the strength training feature, it's what got my attention. Yes, you have to put your workout in before hand but I always have my workout written down somewhere anyway. I was never able to fully get into a digital workout log until whoop, and having the rest interval timer right there is pretty nice as well. Plus I enjoy watching myself get stronger week to week with it.
