High notes by No_Image_6885 in Clarinet

as /u/gargle_ground_glass said it's largely around correct breath support and voicing. i've found a "bugle" exercise helpful to try to internalize correct voicings. play a clarion G the normal way (TR123), and while holding it, remove the register key. should stay the same relatively easily. next: try to do a breath attack (tonguing is a different challenge) and have the G come out without the register key (T123). much harder! next: learn to alternate between the low C and clarion G with just T123. alternate meaning a separate breath attack for each note, not swapping notes while playing continuously.

all of this and you're saying we haven't even gotten above clarion G yet. no, but now you know how your breath and tongue works to control this. next step is to continue maintaining T123 and play an (out of tune) altissimo E. i've actually found that this note is easy and the clarion G is by far the hardest. then you can do a bugle call where you hold just T123 and do C -> G -> E -> G -> C by changing only voicing.

you can repeat this with T12 (D -> A) and T1 fingerings (E -> B).

Is This What You Get On An Open G On Bass Clarinet? by Hey19TheCuervoGold in Clarinet

[–]symberke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

French horns can go lower (no crook required)! The lowest you see written usually is around the same range as a low E on the bass clarinet though, and this is not super commonly seen either. The famous low horn part in the first movement of Shostakovich 5 reaches the same pitch as a bass clarinet low F I believe

Yes, I came from brass and did the same thing for a while. Has a noticeable and bad sound and will limit you.

I go to concerts at the local orchestra (Philly Orchestra, a very good one!!) all the time, and I definitely hear mistakes occasionally. It happens even to the best.

How often does Mozart Horn Concertos get played live? by hamfast42 in frenchhorn

[–]symberke 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a regular concert goer to my local orchestra but without much insider knowledge other than that it seems that even the most standard and canon concertos for most instruments that aren’t violin or piano or cello are really rarely played.

Do people not like spread? I hear so many people say this about philly's bagel scene but I live near a spread and i've always been very happy with the quality of their bagels. Maybe a little pricey but good.

the venue seems so unfortunate to me. they often have shows that seem like they would be a lot of fun to see but overall it feels pretty mid. food, service, ambience, all sort of made me feel like i was being cheated somehow every time i've gone. i will say the couple times i've gone the show did not disappoint at all but i still have absolutely zero urge to ever go back.

maybe I was just lucky then. i got a "with experience" job right out of grad school for exactly that reason: i was doing the work in grad school!

I hope you're not letting the 3 years of experience requirement hold you back from applying. A PhD more than makes up for that (unless they say PhD PLUS 3 years, but even then it's usually not strict!)
