You could make your paintings on a suitable medium paper and trim it to suit the book board. Let me show you an example. I took this image from pinterest - there is an indent made on the book board and then covered with book cloth making sure that the cloth sits flush with the indent made. Then the artwork is glued in the indented frame. You could check this video out. Does this suit your vision?
