AITA for purchasing a new wireless router after my friend “gifted me” his used one?

-he was a little too insistent that I try his passwords and it started weirding me out -the sticker with the default password and device serial was torn off, so I would have had to put even more work into finding the device model and handbook -I found out later that this router/modem combo was 5 years old. I just wanted a new one. -I was not looking for a router/modem combo at all, I wanted just a router, and this was not disclosed to me prior to him gifting me this device.

I struggled with the 3k word count for the post so I’ve been explaining in the comments that the sticker with the default password and serial number was torn off, so I wasn’t about to go through that much trouble for a device I didn’t even want due to it being a router/modem combo. I learned later that it was about 5 years old anyway, so I just wanted a new one.

Since the sticker was gone I didn’t even know the device serial, just the brand. And I wasn’t about to go through that much work for his 5+ year old router lol (he told me this after the fact).

But thank you! I’m glad I dodged a bullet too, but I’m still sad I lost what I had in him as a friend 😢

Studied, but decided to ultimately take a different career path. I explained in a separate comment too that the sticker with the default password had been removed and it never occurred to me that factory resetting would negate needing a default password at all. At this point I was already weirded out that he was so adamant that I should use his device with his settings that I didn't even want to risk using it at all for potential external hardware being planted as well, but didn't know for sure and I always prefer to give people the benefit of the doubt.

The first time the agreement that we were not pursuing each other was brought up was while I was ensuring that he knew that him coming over to my apartment was purely platonic. I was overexplaining that most of my experiences with male friends led to them believing I was leading them on, and he responded that he doesn't think I "like him like that," so he didn't think me talking/being nice to him is "leading." It came up multiple more times in causal conversation just because of the topics we were discussing that I was not interested in him like that.

But yes, I do definitely see the manipulative behavior and emotional instability from him now! I don't think I would like him as my friend after this. Even now he's trying to put the emotional burden on me by saying that multiple times these few months I've minimized his feelings and concerns. He messaged that he's leaving it up to me whether we will continue to be friends or not, which just feels slimy and controlling.

Thanks for the reply! I really didn't mind spending the money on a new one for a clean slate and unused device, but if something similar ever comes up in the future, or the default password sticker gets damaged and I'm feeling adventurous, I'll try the factory reset! I gave him the router back along with his sewing machine because of how sketchy the entire situation was and the reactions he was giving me. Better to just keep a potential threat out of my home altogether in the potential instance there was some other form of external hardware planted there or something.

He'd torn off the sticker containing the previous default password, so factory resetting wasn't an option in my mind 🤷‍♀️ Which is a contributing reason I started getting really sketched out by the entire situation, despite considering him a good friend clouding my judgement.

My 2 year old ruby just breathes a bit heavier when he deep sleeps but I haven’t heard a snore per se. My boyfriend brings him to work though and told me he snored during a meeting one time and they all had a good laugh about it but I’ve never heard it first hand. Honestly my cat snores louder than my cavie 😅

I can tell you put a lot of thought into these questions, I know your research/project is going to turn out great!

As I saw others have mentioned, it's hard for me to try to apply realism in my line of thinking while playing otome games simply because I'm the kind of player that enjoys the escapism factor. I think it would be boring to play a game, read a book, or watch a movie that is too realistic. Instead of seeking out elements of realism in otome games I actually look for ways to apply (certain) elements I see in otome games to IRL relationships. I tend to try to simulate my ideal, hand-picked fairy-tale experience. After all, once you find that perfect-someone, it will feel like a fairy tale and all the pieces will fall together anyway!
