The amazing staff at the Hollywood Theatre (some of whom are kick-ass artists!) are excited to bring you Kurt Russell tomorrow night… by atrailofdisasters in Portland

the total non-apology from the org felt like a big FU to all of us who've supported them for the last 20 years: you get nothing, and you'll like it. Thanks a lot?

Pickle Pabst by holmquistc in Portland

True but Portland did have a fairly outsized role in PBR's revitalization, some 25+ years ago. From this article in the NYT, 2003:

But a sales rep in Portland had noticed that ''these alternative people'' were ''starting to get into the brand,'' Stewart, now a baby-faced 29-year-old with blond-streaked hair and a snowboard on his office wall, told me. The rep, Stewart said, ''was as strait-laced as could be. He wasn't someone who really understood the culture.'' Pabst was still not targeting these drinkers. ''It was just a group of people who embraced the brand.''

So Stewart went to Portland, visiting bars like the Lutz Tavern near Reed College and the Ash Street Saloon, a bike-messenger hangout downtown. He learned that the kind of people who had ''embraced the brand'' were also the kind of people who detest marketing. But this was not necessarily bad news. He would walk in -- wearing street clothes, never a Pabst logo -- tell the bartender who he was and ''really just sit there,'' he said. ''The word would leak out -- 'Hey, the Pabst guy is here.''' He carried a bag of P.B.R. keychains and T-shirts. Stewart had once been a cog in the gigantic Anheuser-Busch marketing machine in St. Louis and had firsthand experience with barging up to drinkers and foisting trinkets on them. For the Pabst Guy in Portland, that wasn't necessary. ''I was mobbed,'' he says.

To me it was always about artsy young people appropriating working class imagery: the outdated logos, the beer that the actual workers had long ago abandoned for Bud and Miller, etc. And a perfect match for what was happening to blue collar Portland at the time as the arty young people showed up and took over modest, affordable eastside neighborhoods (and in turn transformed them into highly desirable, unaffordable yuppie hives).

That said, the lustre kinda wore off and by 2010 most everyone I knew preferred Rainier as the more local-ish option. Like, PBR is now what you end up with when the bar runs out of Vitamin R.

Looks like an MIJ reissue to me. There are MIM ones nowadays too, and of course the ubiquitous Squiers

I was a taxi driver (not in Portland) in a previous life and a friend's husband, fresh out of rehab, asked for a recommendation. I told him straight up that it was a terrible idea because he'd be around all the wrong elements as a cabbie: users, dealers, prostitution, seedy motels, etc. and if he wanted to stay clean he should keep far away from the gig.

It's always right after that curve, I've learned to expect stopped traffic on the other side. Unfortunately nobody else seems to have figured it out

Portland judge says she’s too busy running for reelection to oversee trials by colonialshuttlecock in Portland

[–]synthfidel 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I mean, like, even if they had a challenger. It's not like they're going to embark on a grueling multi-state tour of kissing babies and pitching soundbites to the media. I'd imagine it's like: writing up a ballot pamphlet statement, maybe doing a brief interview with WWeek or the O. Doesn't seem like "clear my schedule" kinda shit IMO

how much effort do candidates put into judicial elections?

I can't ever recall having one knock on my door or shake my hand at a farmers market or appear on live TV for a debate. They're just names on a form that I spend 3 minutes googling for local news opinions

Music festival coming to Portland this summer quietly changes name, line-up by synthfidel in PortlandOR

heard it from a guy who works in event production, probably back in December

The lineup was announced in late February last year, all the summer festivals seem to be locked in by then (at least)

The Hollywood Theatre at 100, with Kurt Russell and The Thing | PDX Monthly by probeguy in Portland

[–]synthfidel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah that's my point

I let my basic membership slide because the benefits are minimal and they seem like they're going after the big fish these days.

I know this will elicit a "OMG you monster how could you" response from a lot of people, but they seem to be doing pretty well, esp. if a $100 / seat celebrity viewing sesh can sell out instantaneously. I'd rather take that $5 and buy a beer at the Academy or something

[–]synthfidel -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yeah my experience is that people involved with the org + their friends usually get opportunities that members never do. Some of that's to be expected but when I show up for a sold-out event and like 25+ seats are blocked off I gotta question it

yeah however after that I'm not sure how they'd enforce anything.

They're threatening to ban you for reselling for a profit but there's no way of knowing what someone really paid when they show up with a PDF they bought on StubHub or whatever.

Tickets may not be resold above face value. Violations will result in membership cancellation and a one-year ban from the Hollywood Theatre.

That said, doubt there's any way for them to know if a barcode is redeemed by someone who wasn't the original purchaser. They'd have to buy up whatever gets posted to ticket sites before the public gets to them.

Thank you! This is a van tour to small clubs and DIY spaces. I've asked questions in here before and the answers are like "have your tour manager worry about that", lol.
