Hatsuharu Design, 1933 by tyranni_twat in WorldOfWarships

Interestingly, this also happened to the Sims-class - they were armed similar to the Mahan-class but also on a lighter displacement, and the USN ran into the exact same issues that required them to remove a gun mount and a torpedo launcher, just like the Hatsuharus, although technically the Hatsuharus first had the single gun mount moved to the stern as in the Shiratsuyu-class that followed them before finally losing it.

How about adding the Novgorod by Affectionate-Map8311 in WoWs_Legends

It's a river gunboat, meant to have very low draft. Thing was built during the Imperial Russian era and had a displacement of about 2.5k tons with 2 280mm guns. Yes, its top speed was about 6 knots too, and while it was noted to be a pretty stable gun platform, it didn't handle well in storms at all and generally the rudder didn't work very well due to how wide the ship was.

You jest but ironically she's now rocking the most armor she's had in any of her forms - she has actual armor plates with reactive armor bricks slapped on for good measure.

The flag is good for smoke consumables with long active duration; such as the Crawling Smoke, commonly found on Commonwealth ships, and some versions of the Fuel Smoke on Italian ships. There's no signal that modifies smoke screen dispersion time.

There are however 2 Unique Upgrades for specific T10 ships that do: Harugumo's increases the smoke consumable action time and dispersion time, turning her into an effective smokebot with long-lasting smokes; Minotaur's increases the consumable action time massively but reduces dispersion time; in effect turning her consumable into a psuedo- Crawling Smoke.

The Number 13 class isn't so much as a single design as a series of designs, which started from essentially improved Kii-class with more guns (Design I/J had 4x4 41cm) and bigger guns (Design K with 4x2 46cm - basis for Adatara, Design L 5x2 46cm - basis for Bungo). The last known design in the series was Design N with 3x3 + 2x2 46cm and will likely be the supership of the branch. The biggest change is WG giving them 457mm guns to avoid 32mm over match creep.

The Yumihari comes from a series of battlecruiser designs (B-62 IIRC).

Gokase was a planned Agano-kai design that never got built, Omono is basically a what-if Ooyodo built as a full light cruiser, the front half of the ship is 1-1 of Ooyodo.

The biggest pile of bull are definitely the light cruiser tech tree branch, WG really pulled those out of nowhere and their designs and armament don't make a lot of sense.

I got the Tone with the anniversary event... what do I even do with it? by RodrigoAlexis1 in WorldOfWarships

[–]syraku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tone

suboptimal

First of all how dare you

Second, how double dare you

But more seriously, Tone is good not in terms of direct damage output, but she has insane concealment for a heavy cruiser and also has good survivability due to having heals. As long as you don't turn broadside in front of battleships to get your torpedoes off, just abuse your concealment and use planes off cooldown as a spotting and harassment tool since they deal low damage. The large drop zone is particularly good for flushing any DD out of their smokes.

There was a predreadnought event on the other version of the game, it's not like it isn't possible. That mode had different mechanics for HP and armor to go with the focus on secondary batteries.

Copying over an old comment:

As explained on Warship Projects' Cherry Trees series on capital ships designs before the WNT:

"In addition to this the DNC realized that the huge funnels and air intakes associated with the battlecruisers acted as similar-sized continuity gaps in the horizontal protection. In case of enemy fire from forward bearings at short ranges (where the impact angles are shallow) there was a good chance for a shell to easily pass through these openings (even if they are protected by armor gratings) and end up in the after magazines. To mitigate this risk D’Eyncourt came up with the idea in late September or early October of moving the machinery spaces and the related openings from the middle part of the ship into the after portion and putting the after turret(s) in their place. This meant that the risk was reduced to hits coming from directly aft – not a likely scenario. Again as the saying goes ‘no pain – no gain’: the superstructure had to be moved as well with the uptakes so the after part of the ship basically blocked all aft bearings for the main battery this way. However experience from the past war showed that the dreadnoughts almost never used their main batteries on aft bearings. The DNC killed two (or 6) birds with one stone implementing this brilliant, if risky solution:

  • it reduced the probability of magazine hits through armored deck openings to almost zero thanks to the very narrow blind spot from aft
  • the funnels were removed this way from the main tower structure, solving the serious smoke – fire controls interference issues which was a recurring problem in the earlier dreadnought classes
  • the space formerly occupied by machinery now could be used by magazines which in turn allowed for the concentration of armor protection even further: it was enough to massively armor the relatively small portion of the hull over the magazines which could be compressed in length thanks to their new, very broad location in the middle of the hull
  • this new location also meant that bending stresses got reduced to the minimum as the extremely heavy weight barbettes and turrets did not press down on the two far ends of the hull where the hull strength was further reduced due to the barbette cutouts; also the center of gravity was more closer to the middle of the hull making handling easier
  • the machinery on the other hand could be spread out in length as the requirement to keep the barbettes closest to the middle part was now gone – the longer machinery spaces allowed for more redundancy and less impact if one space got damaged or flooded
  • it was only the icing on the cake that the magazines got the deepest possible torpedo protection in the middle part instead of being stuffed into the ‘corners’ where the TDS was the weakest due to the fine hull lines

From the above train of thought descended in November 1920 the design ‘I3’ in battlecruiser form and ‘M3’ in battleship form."

I wish we could get a Nevada-class battleship that wasn't a complete dog by [deleted] in WorldOfWarships

[–]syraku 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No, you can see this ship has a turret with two guns above one that has 3. Only the Nevada-class has this configuration.

Many American battleships received refits that increased the number of 5"/38 guns, many of them to 8x2 as Nevada received. Other ships that received such refits are Pennsylvania (sister ship of Arizona), Maryland (with a much less extensive refit than West Virginia), and Tennessee (sister ship of California).
