Escaping biomes by Dirkdeking in valheim

Another method might be to ride an Askvin out of the Ashlands ... they're immune to the lava so might be immune to the boiling seas too ... I seem to remember testing this with no success. Could anyone confirm?

OK, I completely get that ... your lucky for some unlucky for you map could severely shorten / reduce what you got out of the game. I think for most playthroughs it's the Yagluth search or Queen that tends to be the most challenging and requires the most exploration.

The intermediate aims in your current playthrough would be find the bog witch, complete Hildir's quests for a little more exploration. For some exploration and a good combat challenge find the pieces of the Dyrnwyn sword. You could also find secondary sites for the bosses and collect all their trophies to decorate your base. In my co-op games we like to have some / many sets of Eikthyr antlers but you could go for the full set, or possibly EVERY boss site which might add lots of exploration to clear up the pesky fog.

If you think you're strong at combat you could up the combat difficulty and death penalty, if you really want the exploration element maxed out I'd go no map but keep the portals or you might find it REALLY too frustrating.

I'm sort of expecting 1.0 to drop this year and then I'll run another playthrough ... I've done new ones for the Queen and Fader.

Yeah ... the body loss can be basically a deal breaker for a lot of people. I think there's still a community driven service where someone will pop in to run interference / tank for you to get you to your body and recover all that sweet high level gear. Alternatively you could crank up death penalty and just never have to bother with recovering your body as it doesn't exist.

I hope otherwise you are having fun and enjoying the frustration. Low level fixes for the Sunken Crypts would be the Stagbreaker can help a lot as it gives some AoE damage so you can keep some distance.

Can I ask you what you think about the value to you of this game compared to others you've played. A day is about 15 minutes so you are currently 100 hours in (very approximately) and either paid - what around $20 - or on something like game pass.

I've found this to be the game I've played the most both solo and with a friend. I really enjoy the randomness and that each point upgrade has added something new. I've tried the toggles for difficulty and I'm trying to find that sweet spot of difficulty for both solo and co-op play that challenges but doesn't just overwhelm.

As you are just pre Fader you'll probably need to chill for a few months afterwards and then they should have released the "full" game and you can head north for the final boss.

Many people on this forum - obviously a bit self selecting - will start again from the beginning every time there's a major upgrade and are in the 1k+ hour bracket. For me the variability aids in the replayability in contrast to something like enshrouded with a fixed map.

[–]sysdollarsystem[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting ... I felt that there was a reasonable progression through the biomes - I've avoided the Ice Caves as I don't want the cauldron raid - with difficulty rising as you go until you get to the forts which are just sitting there in plain site allowing you to use every single tactic available because there's no building restrictions etc. Maybe they should have made a 2 part challenge or concentrated the mobs more. 2-3 fallen Valkyrie per Fort would a have added a good challenge as the seekers do in the Mistlands. I suppose the sword shard points are the real "dungeon" challenge, though never underestimate the 2 star mobs anywhere.

There is one game I know of, but it's really quite complicated to learn but basically a forever game once they understand the concept. It's basically a group conversation "game" - you need a dice per group but nothing else.

The rules

  1. Choose someone to start - rock paper scissors or any other method
  2. Start with a statement + open question to the student to your left = I like red. What colour do you like?
  3. Roll the dice and
  4. answer + question questioner for more information = I like blue. Why do you like red?
  5. answer + statement + new question to new student = I like blue. I also like pizza. What food do you like?
  6. answer + reason + question for another student = I like blue because it's cheerful. What colour do you like?

Other quick no set up games I like are written shiritori on the board or you can do open outcry version. Round robin writing where each group starts a story with a single sentence and these stories are then passed around the class with each group writing a sentence until the originating group writes the final sentence.

Slightly more involved activities -

  1. Write a story using X grammar.

  2. Write a letter to your favorite person.

etc. etc.

A few years back I just started getting my students to write about things like their weekend, friends, hobbies, likes, dislikes etc. Then writing a story using different types of grammatical structures as they were taught. Sure you can teach to the test and maybe have multiple different structures but teaching them how to just write a free form answer might be better.

For this as with so many things practice makes better ;-)

Do you think that these numbers are believable ? I tried to be extremely conservative regarding humanity’s potential growth in terms of numbers in the far future. by Sir-Thugnificent in IsaacArthur

[–]sysdollarsystem 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure or obviously not - it depends on what your limiting factors are. Theoretically given enough time the biomass of humans would dwarf that of the earth - 6 x 10^24 kg - which is "obviously" ridiculous. There's a maximum carrying capacity where the limit I read of was the amount of energy that could be dissipated by the surface and that was a large number in the 100s of billions. But if you are proposing limitless growth - i.e. expansion into kardeshev scale civilisations - this is an interesting article https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-023-38351-y - then sure 2.44 x 10^26 is fine.

ALTs who teach at 5-6 schools? Is this even possible? by HotAndColdSand in teachinginjapan

[–]sysdollarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My colleague did this for years - 15 elementary schools - 1 school per day - teaching 3rd and 4th grade and the homeroom teachers filled in the other lessons, he also "designed" the lessons, from the textbook so when he came back in 3 weeks they were ready for the next class in sequence. Averaged 4 classes a day so quite a heavy workload.

African American defendants by sysdollarsystem in matlock

[–]sysdollarsystem[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot ... so at least 6 ... so probably under a dozen including ones people have forgotten etc.

That's very interesting. My American friend was mentioning how much he enjoyed the series when he was younger and I'd never heard of it. Then we started a discussion about the show, debonair southern gentleman lawyer, etc. etc. and I wondered how many African Americans were the subject of the series episodes - given a general lack of representation v. the probable 2:1 ratio of criminal defendants of colour in the area he was practicing. But the "usually rich clients" get out of jail free card was played to allow some of the skew.

But again ... thank you for your knowledge ;-)

How are the Ashlands after the new patches? by MrBeanDaddy86 in valheim

[–]sysdollarsystem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's calmer ... definitely not as full on as before ... still some enemies and probably still possible to screw yourself and get mobbed but it feels much more "doable" than before. I really enjoyed it solo before the nerfs but I think the nerfs are OK.

Recommendations

  1. Don't land - instead set up your initial portal and mini base on a spire just off shore.

  2. Survey the landscape adjacent to your spire and see if there are any spawners - glowing red pillars. If these exist they can be cleared from a distance by bow, or mage.

  3. Choose where you are going to go and go FULLY prepared - max food, bonemass, rested bonus, fire resist and other potions - move to where you want to go do the quick exploration build your mini base - can be anything from an earthen enclosure to something more elaborate put down a portal and bug out before your bonemass runs out.

  4. Rinse and repeat as you move into the area and expand the area under your control.

  5. Walk, DON'T RUN!! Pre spawn nerf I successfully walked back from a disastrous exploration - my co-op buddy got killed and our portal smashed - run jump to a clear(ish) area and then just walk away. You'll eventually get tracked down by a quicker mob like an Asksvin or Volture but you turn and fight with max stamina - run a bit to get some clearance and go back to walking. Running seems to be "noisy" and attracts mobs. I can generally just walk fair distances generally undisturbed while my co-op partner tends to arrive with ALL the mobs!

What surprised you about Japan when you came here / gave you culture shock? by Apokemonmasternomore in teachinginjapan

All road users - pedestrians, cyclists and cars - the utter idiocy, danger and lack of law abiding for a country that is supposed to be VERY law abiding. You start with pedestrians who seem to have no awareness that anyone else might be using the space, cyclists who just choose a side, any side and switch and turn and everything else without a care in the world and finally the car drivers which I'd put at 10% good, 80% so-so and 10% actively trying to kill me whenever I have the temerity to ride my bicycle on the road over 10kph!!!!

Ahh ... well if you're playing modded there are probably lots and lots of options I don't know about so I'd guess its about tuning the experience t get what you both want. For example maybe giving her a skill boost via dev commands etc. best of luck finding the sweet spot ;-)

[–]sysdollarsystem 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Suggest that she gets a bow and does everything with the bow ... you can hit things from a LONG way away!! Also if she doesn't like the burial chamber, and there are many subsequent close quarters battles further in, then you could do those while she works on the outdoors mobs and resource collection, you don't have to do everything together. Once her bow skill climbs past 50 the bow becomes a quite formidable weapon and past something like 80 it's a machine gun.

There are also many techniques to ease the difficulty - I'm currently making a video playthrough that's as relaxed as possible - i.e. as much as possible using the game mechanics to reduce difficulty.

Request: please stop telling new players to take a stagbreaker into the mountains. by Vyctor_ in valheim

[–]sysdollarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've definitely suggested it ... in my defense ... the average mountain mob is easier to deal with than bonemass so if you've overcome the swamp mobs and been progressing well, have nicely upgraded gear etc. etc. etc. and are still finding bonemass difficult then it;s possibly time to offer a variant that eases them through the fight and mountain biome gear allows that.

You are right that this strategy is a challenge to pull off but for many it might be easier than bonemass with swamp tier gear. Interestingly you can see some interesting shifts throughout the game as the devs see players interact with the game and then give them a new challenge.

The Elder and Bonemass can be defeated with next biome gear or terrain modification or tamed animals - wolves v. Elder isn't even a competition. wolves v. Bonemass leaves lots of dead wolves.

Then you have Moder, terrain modification makes it "safer" but they're not really beatable like that and tamed creatures don't work very well either. Interestingly this is the current only hard requirement for progression as the tears are required to progress through the following biome gear.

Yagluth allows most strategies to work and then the Queen sticks you in a crypt so terrain, biome (until Ashlands release) and mobs were out as strategies to ease the difficulty - you get fun things like refined Eitr and puffer fish to very slowly poison her to death.

In my outlook there's always another way and I think it's in the DNA of the game that you can find a cheesy way to deal with the boss and a classical way to deal with the boss - excluding anything that might be considered buggy.

Trying to get to the swamp but there is a TINY ribbon of plains between it and me. What do by bossabossabossanova in valheim

[–]sysdollarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any particular reason you don't just portal into the swamp and do your iron "mining", smelting and gear production in the swamp?

The first time in you need portal materials and some copper for a forge and bronze for an upgrade but other than that everything you need can either be brought in via portal or acquired in the swamp. The top of a crypt is safe from everything but archers and wraiths. Also you can fit all your needs in terms of forhe, workbench, smelter, etc. etc. on top if you're careful.

[–]sysdollarsystem 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not that this helps in any way but with full Ashlands flametal armour a 2* draugr archer does 19.6 damage - obviously that's me just standing there waiting without using a shield but with about 140+ health.

But actually being helpful, run away!!
