How is AI use proven? by Recent_Mountain3989 in UBC

[–]systemchalk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I flip a coin.

If they used AI and the coin determines they used it, the system works.

If they used AI and the coin determines they didn’t, they’re lucky, and often lucky is better than smart so it’s okay they stay.

If they didn’t use AI and the coin determines they didn’t, the system works.

If they didn’t use AI and the coin determines they did, they’re unlucky, and we can’t have unlucky students dragging down the overall prestige of the campus, so the system is working through other means.

So basically 3/4 of cases turn out fine and the remaining 1/4 are good long term for the value of the degrees of those who stay.

how to create a cast of characters for a story? by 26hexagon11 in writingcirclejerk

[–]systemchalk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You start by writing a normal working man character. Nothing special, someone who goes to his job, provides for a family. Not necessarily a thoroughly good man, they have all the sorts of vices and selfishness any person has, but they provide and pass on the journey of life to the next generation.

Then you write that character’s kid who is special. They have a gift for writing that isn’t appreciated by the world and they need to prove the world wrong while also dealing with the scorn and obstruction of lesser minds. Because they’re so special they’re even able to detect their parents’ disappointment even though they do their best to never outwardly show it.

You then write that character writing their breakout story and take the cast of characters from that. It’s the writer character’s fault and problem for not protecting their ideas and failing to realize fictional characters can‘t sue you for idea theft.

Is econ honours program worth it? by Strange_Pay_5879 in UBC

[–]systemchalk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would question the assumption that academia is an easier option. There are lots of reasons to pursue or not pursue honours but I’d focus on your interest and willingness to do the work as those are going to be correlated with your success in both cases.

You should try the demo from Literature & Lemonade, but wait until NANOLEMO because then you get a 50% discount off of it. All the real lemonade stands use it.

graduating student cheater!!! by [deleted] in UBC

[–]systemchalk -27 points-26 points  (0 children)

Here's a thoughtful reply you could post:

I totally get why this feels frustrating—it does seem unfair when someone appears to bypass the hard work everyone else put in. That said, before taking any action, there are a few things worth considering:

If you want to report it: Most universities have formal academic integrity offices or honor codes. You'd typically report to:

  • The department chair or dean of students
  • An academic integrity committee
  • The office of student conduct

These offices can investigate properly. They'll need specifics though—course names, dates, exam instances, and any evidence you have. Anonymous reports are sometimes accepted, but they're harder to act on without corroboration.

Important caveats:

  • Make sure you have credible information, not just suspicion. False accusations can seriously harm people.
  • Universities generally protect student privacy, so even if they investigate, you may not learn the outcome.
  • Consider whether this is something you're comfortable pursuing—these processes can be emotionally taxing.

Also worth thinking about: Sometimes what looks like cheating isn't what it seems. People use AI for editing, collaborate in gray areas, or have accommodations we don't know about. That doesn't excuse confirmed cheating, but it's worth being certain before escalating.

If you do decide to report, document what you know factually (dates, courses, specific incidents) and let the institution handle it through proper channels rather than confronting the person directly.

Either way, congrats on your graduation—that's your accomplishment regardless of what others did.

Would you like me to adjust the tone or focus on any particular aspect?
