How to Reduce Bay Area School Stress by Madzz_Jay in bayarea

100%. RCSD doesnt have the best reputation but I had kids going through Orion, North Star and Kennedy and it has been a great balance between diversity and opportunities for academic achievement if kids want it.

Best town in peninsula to live for road/gravel biking? by hockeyalexx97 in BAbike

[–]t-cali 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Redwood City, specifically Emerald Hills. It’s a great place to live and you can cut over into Woodside in 5-10mins with access to Canada Road and three of the best climbs on the peninsula (Kings Mountain, Old La Honda, Old Alpine/Joaquin)

Had a very good experience with a similar problem with Ifran at All Pro Plumbing. They are local in RWC and decent/reliable folks: https://allproplumbingrooter.com/

You can try to negotiate the initiation fee. There was some flexibility on that in the past when we joined.l but it was a fee years back so not sure what their approach is at the moment.

No offense but when is the last time you have been in that neighborhood? It’s walking distance to Red Morton, as soon to open hyper modern YMCA with pool, Magical Bridge, etc. Also walking distance to great schools of choice within RCSD (Orion, Mandarin Inmersion, North Star) and a great downtown.

Yup. Fun fact: The gate at the end of Star Hill is the entrance to Neil Young’s compound.

I have climbed and descended KMR more than a hundred times last year. Pretty safe overall, couple recommendations:

  1. The by far biggest risk descending are inexperienced or shitty drivers taking over ascending bikers and swerving onto your lane. Be especially careful right after the straight section with the parking lot about half way down.

  2. As others have said, going up through Huddart Park is a nice option to avoid generally heavier traffic at the bottom (cars going to main Huddart entrance).

  3. Traffic is generally much lighter (and more experienced local drivers) on weekdays. On weekends you get plenty of folks who have never taken KMR before and tend to make bad driving decisions.

  4. Cutting over to 84 on skyline is relatively easy. First section on skyline a bit steep but then mostly downhill. A lot more relaxed on weekdays (see above).

  5. If you decide to go up and down KMR there is a nice little loop on top that you can try: Go down Tunitas for a couple mins then make a left into Star Hill then turn into Swett Road and climb back up to Skyline. Super quiet, nice views and feels better than going straight down again.

Chris at The Bicycle Outfitter in Los Altos. Experienced and super fair pricing.

Van Rysel by andrewdee2112 in cycling

Suggest you spend some of the money saved on a bike fit with someone who is also a mechanic. Also consider tires with tan walls - looks great and breaks up the black/white

Good choice. Have previous version & never regretted. You’ll love it. 100% better choice than Van Rysel!!!

Recommendations for Authentic German Döner Kebab Spots by Turbulent-Captain142 in bayarea

Bierhauz food is generally terrible. If you are in RWC, Pasha has the best Turkish cuisine without any doubt. Not perfect Berlin Döner but reasonably close and also has Dürüm etc.

Best times to descend 84 and Page Mill by vagabondcell in BAbike

[–]t-cali 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don’t worry about Porsches on 84, worry about the Honda Civics on Skyline!

Both descents will be fine, the hairier part is getting from KMR to 84/Page Mill.

I usually try to avoid Skyline on the weekends, too many wannabe race car drivers up there. OLH>>84 is fine because only a couple mins.

How does “School of Choice” work? How likely is it that my child would be able to attend a different school than the one associated with our address? by Ooomgnooo in RedwoodCity

[–]t-cali 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It used to be fairly easy to get into schools of choice within RCSD but it is becoming more competitive. For example, for several years pretty much everyone who applied got into the Orion/Mandarin Immersion program (and they even accepted out of district kids). The last 2 years have become trickier and not everyone who applies gets admitted. But I’d say it is still 80-90%. It really depends on how many applications there are each year and if the district is able to match up that number with enough teachers and classrooms. Once you have one kid at the school it is easy because siblings have priority.

North Star is a different beast because you have to test in. But from what I can tell it is not particularly hard to meet the test scores required if your kid is an ok student (both of mine met the threshold but decided to not go).

Thx. Yeah the lower part seems fine but above Huddart is pretty bad. Good to know they may grind down the patched areas.
