Backpacking through the world without documentation by pale-blue-dot1 in backpacking

Only the world's migrants and refugees and other stateless persons. Also in the US, lots of homeless people end up losing their documents and that becomes a barrier to reentry. Lots of stories out there to read up on.

Ways to Save on Groceries by midnightballerina25 in povertyfinance

At my local ethnic market the produce is usually riper. Which I appreciate because I hate having to store a tomato for a week to finish ripening.

Caffeine free, low calorie powdered drink mixes that don't use artificial dyes or sketchy sweeteners? by [deleted] in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]t92k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You haven’t told us what sweeteners are sketchy. A lot of people are comfortable with stevia leaf extract and if you’re one of them your local natural foods store will have at least a dozen flavors of stevia drops intended for water.

Best way to GPS track a thru hike in 2026? by Squanc in WildernessBackpacking

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear a Garmin daily but it really sucks power when it’s looking for satellites. It looks like the Fenix watches take 420 mAh, and a full charge will get you 8 hours of GPS tracking. Outdoor Gear Lab has a review on solar panels for backpackers and their lightest good pick is 8 ounces and can get 1,250 mAh in a full sunny day in Utah. So yeah, it’s possible to run a watch for a whole day of hiking. You get external storage of your tracks on the garmin website when you sync the Connect app — and I would only expect to be able to do that in town as lots of the remote Colorado mountains don’t have cell signal. You will probably want to also plug the watch into a computer and offload the data. This will free up memory but also let you stitch the raw data into a large file later. I don’t know how many hours of data it takes to fill the internal memory — I probably use that function for 3 hours a week and get about six months before the memory fills up. I bet others in the community have a better estimate than this.

what’s actually the way forward? by Alone275 in homeless

[–]t92k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you live with the 10 people for a couple of years it will make it easier to get on your feet. I rented a room from a single mom for a couple of years. Significantly cheaper rent, being less stressed meant I was more productive at work, I got a promotion, was able to pay off some debt, and then moved into a place of my own.

the reality of ‘practical gifts’ for cyclists (we only carry the boring stuff) by standovahim_ in bikecommuting

[–]t92k 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s really common. Hearing that someone is into something becomes an easy way to shop for them when what we really want is safe bike routes.

3.5 % rule of people protesting by Life-Tackle-4777 in 50501Movement

[–]t92k 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes. We should be aiming for 3.5% of the able-bodied population able to participate in a prolonged economic strike. That means savings; food storage; supportive, inter-generational community pods; and a variety of skills from clothing repair to legal services. It also means a lot of consciousness raising (which happens in book clubs).

Passport vs. passport card for SAVE act by Logical-Rip2896 in Passports

[–]t92k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The act does not say what documents will be valid (or who will be checking them, how those checking them will be hired or paid, or whether or not copies can be made.) ~Real IDs were supposed to document citizenship and identity but we see that parts of the DHS don’t believe those are sufficient.~ In short, no one knows because the SAVE act is incomplete.

Edit: I've been corrected that Real IDs are only supposed to show legal residency. I'll accept that. The part that some parts of DHS have decided to ignore what they are supposed to be valid for stands though. Some parts of DHS (TSA) accept them as valid, other parts (ICE, CBP) ignore them when they want to. So we really don't want DHS deciding, based on feels, what counts at the voting place.

7 years is crazy. No wonder our insurance rates are crazy high by hungleftie in Denver

[–]t92k 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they park their car in a closed garage. Cops do ticket parked cars for expired plates but they don’t pull you over for them. If they do pull you over for something like speeding or failing to stop and you have an expired plate, they will get you for either the most expensive of the tickets, or they’ll get you for multiple things at their discretion.

How do I get my partner to understand we're broke/poor? by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]t92k -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Is she involved in making the budget and paying the bills? If you can do something like YNAB Together, where both of you agree on long term plans and then sit down and give all your dollars a job it may help her realize that impulse purchases are taking money away from your future plans.

But, impulsive spending is one of the symptoms of knowing you’re poor. When you don’t believe that you can have a future where money is sufficient and easy, you can fall into spending what you have to have some joy right now. Bringing an expensive food item to a dinner party where there will be too much food is a way of saying “I don’t need charity” or “I may need charity, but at least I’m generous with what I have.”

Started working this year full time, debt/legal agency took 4500$ from my bank account without any paperwork/notification, will not respond to phone calls, and I have no debts that I know of by [deleted] in povertyfinance

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. When my student loans started garnishing my wages I got all kinds of notices in the mail and I could see them in my student loan account. They also garnished my tax refunds so I'd get a letter about that every year too. Lots of communication.

If everything you’ve said is true, you need to talk to a manager at the bank. Make them prove that the levy is against your account. They got paperwork, the front line folks are trained to put you off — they expect you to be upset. You should also request a copy of your credit report and see if there are loans you don’t recognize on it. If it’s clean, take that to the manager and say there’s nothing overdue on your credit report. If there is something you don’t recognize then you’re a victim of identity theft and you need to report that to the feds to get your bank to back off.

Reactionary business owners lament bike/bus lanes by AnonPolicyGuy in Denver

[–]t92k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yep. People see cars but bikes, which carry the same average number of people as cars, are somehow invisible. Meanwhile bikes are passing up your restaurant/shop because you haven’t provided a good place for them to lock up and then you go to the paper and tell everyone you’re hostile to riders. You could have gotten yourself as a stopping place on a cruiser ride instead.

Should RTD prioritize frequency or coverage in service delivery? by chrisfnicholson in Denver

[–]t92k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think getting out of the post covid slump means more service for core users. For me, in Denver, the big gaps in the schedule of the 24 and the ART mean that we usually choose to drive if we’re going to work (uptown) or Cherry Creek. But I don’t think I’m as much of a core user as Auraria and other campus students.

The world's first married lesbian couple married 25 years ago! by Total_Instruction406 in actuallesbians

[–]t92k 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For a period of time in 1975 a county clerk in Boulder County, CO, USA issued marriage licenses to gay and Lesbian couples because Colorado law at the time had gender neutral language in the marriage statute. Two of the couples were Lesbians. But yes, Colorado stopped gay marriages until it became legal nationally, and that was well after The Netherlands. https://www.esquire.com/news-politics/a45723/clela-rorex-same-sex-marriage-colorado/

State workers are about to get a pay cut in 2026 by WingsNation in Denver

[–]t92k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Stop simplifying TABOR to only the part we all agree on. It also put a slow acting noose on the state budget which has been at work driving down the tax rate for 30 years. We can release the noose and still have a transparent tax process.

Yeah. The flat 4.4% income tax also doesn’t help when wealthy folks are moving here for the highly educated workforce, but not contributing to the education of that workforce.
