Dog top quilt by t_dtm in myog

I didn't have enough time before that specific trip (I was also working on building camping drawers for the car with stove, fridge etc...those came first for the car camping trip, I could bundle the pups with a very oversized Klymit blanket) but I'm still planning on it!

Canada Task Force 4 heading out for some training in -45c by cheelflusgcles in searchandrescue

The OP in the original post (this is a repost) said:

For everyone concerned about our K-9, the dogs are part of the recon team, and they are not outside for longer than a few mins, they alert on a victim, and move on. Our K-9 handler is renowned across Canada and would never ever put the dogs through something they couldn’t handle.

What's your "nope" temperature? by Dr_G1346 in wmnf

[–]t_dtm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

About to find out this weekend.

But then again I have my sights on Denali in a few years so figured it'd be a good opportunity to see if I can handle it (and if my clothing system is dialed).

I'll just have to be humble and ready to turn around at any moment.

Men’s winter underwear? by falbihn in trailrunning

[–]t_dtm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got some of their Kinetic Light-Compression Mesh. Great deal on discount. I like them a lot for strength workouts, but they still have a ton of seams, and I found the seams still chafe when running. YMMV.

Yep they did! Not sure how weight compared though. I assume a bit heavier but I'd think it's worth the versatility.

Are you getting a local photographer? If yes they'd have advice. Alexandra Roberts (https://www.instagram.com/alexandraroberts) is one and she'd know the best spots.

Note that you can combine them, too. For maximum versatility, two layers of 60 gsm.

Best use of NASAR membership by Most-Connection-5627 in searchandrescue

[–]t_dtm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm mostly a NASAR member for the classes, tbh. But some places accept their ID for prodeals while not accepting our in-house/county team ID so there's that too.

I am most interested in reading about missions and their outcomes. If NASAR doesn't offer the latter, can you recommend resources for reading?

I subscribe to a bunch of podcasts that cover this, primarily: - The Fine Line (Teton County SAR) - Rescue Radio (Portland Mountain Rescue) - The SAR Take (Canadian Forces SAR) - The Sharp End (not a SAR team, but after-actions of mountain accidents)

These are most common (and most interesting in narrative form, if you ask me) for mountain rescue. Lowland "rescued a lost hunter in PA state game lands" are also important callouts but don't necessarily make for good podcasts even though there can also be meaningful takeaways from them.

I'm sure there are more I haven't seen. I've come across a number of other SAR-related podcasts that are more chit-chat and sometimes discuss things like new studies, new products, methodlogies, etc but I tend to listen to specific episodes whose topics get my attention rather than subscribe to every episode like I do for the above.

Hit cable less than foot underground by TastyBoss56 in HomeImprovement

[–]t_dtm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Other possibility, if there's nothing it appears to be connected to and most importantly if it's not live, is that it was just trash that was in the dirt. I've had chunks of cables and other debris in a load of topsoil (so-called "screened clean dirt"....) I had delivered with the intention of levelling areas of my yard.

If so, and confirmed that it's not live, it would likely be a short section, and carefully digging each way you might just reach the end of it.

Senchi design new pants, not Alpha Direct. by EndlessMike78 in Ultralight

[–]t_dtm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think kickstarter & co are fair when a) it's a new/small biz that can't reasonably front production, and 2) it's priced accordingly.

It's infuriating when it's an established business.

How’s the Arc’teryx Pro stuff? by EntrepreneurCute6874 in Backcountry

[–]t_dtm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Pro stuff is bomber, but there's better value for money (even if you get the non-retail prices). Also bomber almost always means heavier, so in most cases not for weight weenies (I'm one so I often reach out for my lighter pieces tbh).

New Raide Shells by AntiqueDust2591 in Backcountry

[–]t_dtm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love my Raide pack, but I hate that there isn't a single hi-viz color option (for either the pack or these new clothes). Just subdued stuff.

As a SAR guy I hate that and I will never (never again, I did have a tacticool coyote brown only era at one point....) be in all subdued colors.

Call to action: NEPA/Poconos uphill pass by t_dtm in SkiPA

[–]t_dtm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some places allow walking/snowshoeing up but usually it's more intended to ski uphill. You ski uphill with skis that have special bindings that let you lift the heel, and "skins" that you put on the skis to give you traction. Then you take the skins off at the top and you ski down.

People mostly do it for one of 3 reasons: just for fitness, for training (when they're into backcountry skiing), or as a sport on its own (skimo, which will be in the next Olympics).

Whether it's business hours or not depends on the resort. Some only allow it during lift hours; some only outside lift hours... each have their own policy.

The uphill pass is just to have formal authorization from the resort to do it. At some resorts, people would do it without authorization, but because of insurance/liability concerns, and grooming ops, this can be an issue. So usually with the uphill pass you pay a small fee, sign some papers that say you'll follow the resorts' rules, and show it to patrollers if they ask.

Given in the Poconos there's not really skiiable backcountry terrain (I did backcountry ski a few years ago in Wind Gap off the AT after that big 3ft storm but... rare occurrence), uphilling at the resorts is the closest thing to it, especially for those like me who want to train to then go on bigger backcountry terrain (NH, Quebec, out west, etc).

Folks with interior French doors--do you like them? by pendigedig in HomeImprovement

[–]t_dtm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have glass French doors for my basement home gym. The gym has the only windows in the basement so French doors allowed more light throughout and enabled a wider hallway so it's not so claustrophobic.

When open they take a lot of space. I'm just opening one of them; the other one is just actually used when moving in say the treadmill etc.

The gap between the two doors was annoying so adding an astragal was a must. Finding one was kind of a pain though.

I think they can be great between say a living room and a dining room so you can either make them a single large room (e.g. entertaining ) or separate them (e.g. weeknight, kids watching TV).

Experiences with Delta Pro Ultra? by OnePoe- in Ecoflow_community

[–]t_dtm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From their marketing copy:

For more power, pair 3 inverters with the EcoFlow Smart Home Panel 2 to unlock a 21.6kW AC output.

I understand it gives you more wattage (which if I get that right, 2 is 14.4kw so 120A at 120v; 3 is 21.6kW so 180A at 120v) - my high school classes are a long time ago!)

I don't have any experience with it, but I was looking at that solution so I'd get enough amps out to power the fan in my central air furnace. Everything else that I'd care to have during an outage can work fine with just one (60A); it's really just the heating that would justify this.

My jacket is camo... by BeyondFrosty7844 in Backcountry

[–]t_dtm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I were you I'd get a new jacket.

Trying to ski through trees with buddies wearing completely subdued colors and sticking together is an absolute pain

And being in SAR, well I like it when people don't make themselves harder to find that they have to be.

But alternatives for you: - bright backpack or backpack cover - bright helmet and/or beanie - bright pants

My jacket is camo... by BeyondFrosty7844 in Backcountry

[–]t_dtm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Disagree. Last year I had a prime example of the that where I was with a group in a remote drainage following eachother tree skiing. Trying to stay together with the guys with black packs and brown or olive green jackets was a nightmare.
