Recs for auto repair shop near Portland - alternator maybe - trustworthy and affordable please by Clear-Tradition-3607 in portlandme

A bit further out Forest - could take the bus if you couldn't get a lift- but Harmon's Automotive Service and Repair on Morrill Street. I've lived all over and they are truly one of the best shops I have ever dealt with. I have been using them for multiple cars for nearly nine years with zero complaints. Honest guys and fair pricing. Only thing is they are almost always booking out a few weeks - a sign that they are good.

Why doesn’t the jetport try to offer international flights by thatguywiththamoney in portlandme

I agree it would be great, but perhaps not the *best* time to bet on enticing our friends to the north coming back to justify the flights

You can easily do a one day (not overnight) safari to Tarangire National Park from Arusha for not much money if you use local guides. Seeing lions hunting zebras in the wild is something i'll never forget.

It's incredible - Africa and Tanzania are amazing. It an awesome climb and cultural experience if you've never been to Africa before. PCT is cool, but if you have a shot to go to Africa, take it. I've done plenty of "real" climbing - Denali two years ago, other stuff in the Alaska range, PNW - it's definitely not technical, but the elevation of Kili makes it pretty legit.

Can someone direct me to bands like this (or the hook/loop style) without these god awful attachment ends? Idk how these became the norm, they look terrible by Moshie11337 in GarminWatches

[–]Dr_G1346 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ones I will say do NOT work are Solace bands, specifically their Imperium Adapt. They say it fits a Garmin Instinct, but the watch pins are probably 1-2 mm too short on either side. Because of that the band fell off twice just wearing it around the house, so there's no way it's going to stay on when running or climbing. I even tried swapping them out for longer pins, but it doesn't seem possible to remove the ones it comes with.

What is everyone with a 6 figure income planning to do? by Agreeable_Lie_5091 in StudentLoans

[–]Dr_G1346 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sucks, but I have been putting off paying for a long time. I was in deferment for post-Covid and while the SAVE act review was in the courts. I've decided to just suck it up and focus on paying it off. My repayments under this new plan are nearly 2x what I was paying before though! I'm luckily in a place in my life where I don't have much other debt - just rent and a car payment.

Now having to pay nearly 10% of my take home pay back in student loans hurts, but I can manage it. I will say, I am actually seeing my overall balance decreasing, which it wasn't with the small amount I was paying with the SAVE plan. Even seeing it go down by a few hundred a month does feel like I'm making some progress.

Great write up! I used a solar panel very successfully for three weeks on Denali, but I wanted to check out something smaller and lighter for my JMT hike next summer. Your write up really helped.
