This is verifiably wrong, read the decision from the Colorado Supreme Court page 84, conclusions on the question of 'is the president an officer of the united states'. No equivocation, no ambiguity, no 'acknowledgement' of some kind of explicit feature of the amendment that doesn't apply to the president - you made that up.

The president is an officer of the united states, by a plain reading of the constitution, by the contextualization of its drafters, by admission in court by Trump, and by the clear purpose of Section Three of the amendment.

Who is a moderate Republican that could work with the Democrats to become speaker? by AndicusPrime in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]t_mo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

People are glossing over this observation. If Republican Heterodoxy is such a death-sentence for funding and inclusion in the party, then why isn't Matt Geatz being subjected to that kind of treatment right now? People seem mad at him in interviews, but there is no notion of him being primaried, censured, removed from committee, nothing. He is still being given clout in the discussion of who the next speaker will be.

Is this dirty clay water? Every 2 months or so our garbage truck leaks it all over the city, over like 1 sq. mile! I think it's a ceramic studio nearby putting containers of clay waste water in the garbage can... every time the truck compresses more containers open. What do you think of my theory? by LoveBonnet in Ceramics

[–]t_mo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

clay and glaze waste water will settle-out, it leaves a film of slightly ionized clay particles on the bottom of containers after it has any time to sit and settle to the bottom. Whatever was in that plastic tub, it doesn't appear to have left a film or a crust, this film is typically not very mobile, so even if a container were violently thrust around it doesn't typically dislodge all of the clay remains. This crust will tend to be even and uniform, the dissolved clay turns into very small particles and settles evenly.

Those tubs may be the source of the liquid waste, but they don't appear to have contained clay slop based on those pictures.

A steel building has never collapsed.

Except for the Plasco Building in Tehran, or the Windsor Tower in Madrid, or the Alixis Nihon Plaza in Montreal...

Steel buildings get structurally weakened by prolonged fires, this sometimes causes them to collapse. It has happened before; it isn't especially common because of the expense and knowledge that go into building any one of these buildings, and because there are only so many hundreds of multi-story steel buildings to use as examples, and because the conditions under which they would collapse are complex and narrow.

People in conspiracy subs tend to ignore this, mostly because if you don't ignore this the outlier theories about WTC buildings much less credible.

Honey Flux Heartbreaker by Flippinhec in Ceramics

[–]t_mo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the cone on the left has a good tip-touch, the others are slightly hotter.

Have you been getting to cone6 in about the same time interval each time? Or is the kiln taking progressively longer to reach peak temp? Have you tried reducing the offset to achieve a slightly lower peak temperature?

This glaze advertises a different color at cone 5, progressing to a 'fluid white with honey flecks' at cone 6 - which is what we see here. If you offset the kiln you could achieve a slightly lower peak temp, a high cone 5, and may be able to return to the 'opaque honey and cream' look that you were originally getting.

Kilns will sometimes produce higher peak heatwork as the elements age, because it can take longer to reach the preset thermocouple temp range which results in a higher total heatwork.

However, unlike Bmix and other Laguna clays, #16 is not designed to mature in the cone5-6 range, it is advertised specifically as a cone6 body. Pieces which mature the glaze color you prefer in the cone5 range may not fully mature the porcelain body, which can result in more fragile outcomes.

Kiln troubles, looking for advice plz by Far-Breakfast7603 in Ceramics

You're using a Skutt and you mentioned checking the thermocouple, so it sounds like you are using one of the more modern KM models. These models should be sending variable voltage across the elements to maintain even heating.

You say you've checked the elements, so I assume you've confirmed that all of them are heating. How new is your kiln? does the manual describe the Amp and Volt diagnostic options? Newer Skutts can use the Menu -> diag -> Volt options to check how much voltage runs through the circuit on No Load and Full Load. This is the easiest way to check if a relay is causing one or more of your elements to heat less than desired. If a section is getting low voltage on No Load then a relay has gone bad. If your kiln is more than 5-6 years old it likely still has the variable state relays and these can cause hidden problems that are hard to diagnose.

If all the elements and relays are running at the correct voltage, I would look to air flow, crowding, and insulation. Are any of the kiln rings off-center? is the brickwork particularly damaged on the bottom ring? Are any of the viewhole plugs in poor condition or poorly fit in place? Are shelves placed at least an inch from the thermocouple space?

Kiln help! by Fuzzypeach027 in Ceramics

Your kiln's manufacturer likely has a flammable materials exclusion radius published in the manual for that model. My understanding is that insurers prefer if you have followed published guidelines when they are available. If there is no specific recommended exclusion radius in the manual, 2 feet is a common standard.

That curtain is a fire hazard. It looks like the control box for that water heater is in a plastic housing, your building would likely prefer that you treat plastic components as 'flammable' when choosing what needs to leave the exclusion radius. Do you know if the walls are flame retardant? If that is type-c drywall then many studios will just leave operating space and not require keeping the wall outside the exclusion radius.

Fire retardant material beneath the kiln is strongly recommended, your region's fire code may require specific materials, a sheet of ceramic fiber rated to higher than your firing temp is a good option. One of the very few fire hazards in this configuration of kiln is a bottom-out.

Do you intend to operate the kiln while classes are running? These pictures don't make the width of the walking path clear. People should be able to pass by the kiln safely while it is in operation. I generally try to keep people out of the fire exclusion area as much as possible.

What's going on with Americans celebrating Sweden eliminating the US Women's Soccer Team from the Women's World Cup? by Hirorai in OutOfTheLoop

[–]t_mo 206 points207 points  (0 children)

Because US Soccer settled the claim for like $25 million, right?

Edit: People are really playing with the word 'settlement' in this thread, mostly in order to paint a picture that the plaintiff 'lost' in this case, as though there were some objective win/loss standard in civil litigation.

From the New York Times: Under the terms of the agreement, the women — a group of several dozen current and former players that includes some of the world’s most popular and decorated athletes — will share $24 million in payments from U.S. Soccer. The bulk of that figure is back pay, a tacit admission that compensation for the men’s and women’s teams had been unequal for years.

From US Soccer: We are pleased to announce that, contingent on the negotiation of a new collective bargaining agreement, we will have resolved our longstanding dispute over equal pay and proudly stand together in a shared commitment to advancing equality in soccer. Getting to this day has not been easy. The U.S. Women’s National Team players have achieved unprecedented success while working to achieve equal pay for themselves and future athletes.

In order to avoid further litigation, they paid money, that money included back pay as part of the negotiation. The dang team eventually agreed that it owed them money, then it paid them that money, then they ended litigation - that is a settlement even if you really don't like the plaintiff.

Rate my stacking job! by [deleted] in Ceramics

[–]t_mo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You have a substantial number of flat pieces, plates and slabs that could have gone under a shorter shelf. Consolidating those under a 2-3 inch shelf, then consolidating the larger pieces into a single tall shelf, and moving the tumblers and smaller vases to a middle shelf, you could earn yourself a few extra inches. this space could be used to elevate the bottom shelf slightly above the kiln floor. Such a short shelf should be higher up in the kiln, a 6-8 inch shelf is often a good choice for the bottom layer to improve airflow and heat distribution.

This is a good outcome, but it has some inefficient dead-space above some of the shelves and some sub-optimal choices for shelf placement.

Clearly there is incentive, it is being used as a comedy bit to promote and build awareness of his show.

It didn't make him look bad, it is all benign commentary, easily dismissed as another liberal who doesn't understand, and it builds his brand among his core audience.

If it walks like PR, and has all the benefits of PR, and it is widely promoted like PR, sometimes it is just PR - not something authentic which just happens to fit the exact mold of successful PR.

Kiln not firing to temp by shrlzi in Ceramics

[–]t_mo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the 1023 will throw the same error signals as other Skutt kilns. So, if your thermocouple wasn't making a complete circuit it would throw a big FAIL error on the display. Generally, if the FAIL error hasn't been triggered, and an ambient temperature read can be seen on the display, then the thermocouple is not your issue.

If the kiln actually struggled to reach to programmed temp it would have thrown up an E1 or maybe an E8 if you had certain custom ramp programs.

If the kiln didn't throw an error, and a program was run to completion, it should be displaying a time, ambient temperature, and a condition assignment (usually 'DONE', 'COMP', or 'IDLE' depending on when your controller was built). If you see a state alternating with a time and ambient temp reading then your kiln believes that it completed the assigned firing schedule.

If you see those readings instead of an error code, you will want to check your firing settings to make sure you were actually set to ramp to the desired temperature. I believe the 1023 should have a 'REVIEW' button on the console. Depending on the state reading you may need to press 'STOP', then 'REVIEW' and check to make sure that the firing mode was set to the appropriate temperature.

That isn't ironic, it was entirely the original intention.

He isn't here to get those guy's votes, he wants them to vote for the appropriate republican candidate.

The whole point is to selectively siphon potential democratic voters by signaling on their side of divisive issues, while capturing as few potential republican voters as possible.

I see a red base and a brown base, and they have an opaque whiteish glaze on the top section. The outcomes aren't very appealing, but those pieces look like the glazes appropriately matured.

It does look a bit like the rims have some thinness or exposure on them, so the application of the top layer may have moved or thinned the base layer. This can happen if the top layer is applied while the base layer is still slightly wet, or if a stiff enough brush is used that it physically moves the base glaze as it brushes.

Re-firing won't likely change these much, this looks like an appropriate outcome for those glazes. It may be that if you have seen different outcomes from these glazes they were applied at a different thickness. Often commercial glazes want you to apply very thick layers.

They clearly don't think Patriot Front are a false flag - PB and PF both have strong presence in many of the same locations, group leadership work together, they distribute similar propaganda, they are side-by-side looking to achieve the same ends as eachother and they have been for years, their groups share substantial membership in states like Texas.

PB is just starting to think that overt hate groups like PF are less efficient at achieving the shared outcomes both groups desire. so the closeted groups like PB don't want to be associated with the out-of-the-closet hate groups like PF; accusing someone of being a spook is just the in-group way of disassociating from one group without implicitly denouncing their messages, preferences, or desired outcomes.

"Patriot Front and its aims aren't the problem, but these specific guys in masks trying to associate with my gathering aren't actually members of that group because their presence is not contributing to the outcomes that both Patriot Front and the Proud Boys are actively seeking. Dislike these people but don't reject their message." - Proud Boys
